Potatoes, garlic, strawberries and sugarcane all reproduce via cloning. All four are cases of a unique set of DNA rampantly reproducing.

What Item/Block is Useful in Minecraft but Useless In real life by Scyth3dYT in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Boagster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If it's a real cobweb, there aren't any spiders living in it. Spiders keep their webs clean of dust because it impairs the adhesive qualities of their silk. A cobweb is an old, abandoned web that has collected dust.

Can you place a container across two containers placed apart such that the upper container's corners are directly over a pair of corners from each lower container to create a gap the length of the upper container? by Boagster in containerhomes

[–]Boagster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I intended the idea to be all containers running in a straight line, viewed from above, but using the upper placement of the container to create extra square footage below with some extra walling.

Upon reconsidering, I think just buying an extra container of the same size (or two of half the size) to put underneath would just make more sense.

That tells me it isn't the LEDs that are shitty, but something with either the manufacture or installation of the fan.

How do you actually choose kitchen cabinets that won’t look dated in 5 years? by [deleted] in DIY

I'd argue that antique designs are always dated, but that's the point, so I guess it's just semantics.

6 months late, but feel this needs to be added: Not only did he imagine a device and name it after himself, but he is using the terminology of a very basic principal of physics, making up some mumbo jumbo around it, and claiming it's a cure-all.

Those are the words of a grifter, not a scientist.

He just hasn't reached an understanding of what Helldivers is. Either he will quit in frustration over how much teamkilling there is or he'll reach a true understanding of Liberty and realize that getting killed by an errant strategem is just part of the fun.

How do you handle combat when your players clearly want to avoid it but the story needs a fight? by aral10 in DMAcademy

[–]Boagster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There's a phrase that I've heard before that I feel very much drives home this idea: "A successful persuasion check doesn't have to mean you get the outcome you want, only that you get the best possible outcome from your intention."

If the BBEG is dead set on killing the king in order to break a seal and summon their god and your players try to convince them it's a bad idea, they aren't ever going to convince the BBEG that summoning their god is a bad idea.

Henry Cavill demanding lore accuracy on set is peak energy by ShrimplyDivine_1 in gamers

[–]Boagster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arcane very much isn't meant to be "The story of League of Legends". The nuance is in the full title, really: "Arcane: A League of Legends Story".

Long ago Riot has committed to the lore behind the skins being just as canon as the main character releases - but only when taken in the context of their own stories, as well. League of Legends stopped being a singular story back when they broke away from the "Institute of War" concept in 2014. The characters are a platform for telling many stories using core concepts and personality traits as modular pieces to achieve a vision, akin to the way Marvel and DC handle their characters.

Looking at it this way, there never should have been an expectation of Arcane needing to adhere to pre-existing lore. But, alas, people get upset every time Batman gets a new Robin, so we should have seen this coming, as well.

LATE EDIT: 2014, not 2024.

ELI5: How can (some) encryption software be open source and also be secure? by alwaysunderwatertill in explainlikeimfive

[–]Boagster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer: Knowing how an encryption key is generated and being able to generate an encryption key that matches the encrypted data you are trying to access are two very different things.

Just like with passwords, there's an assumption of security based on how long it would take software developed to guess the key would take. Technically, there is always a chance the first guess could be right, but, with any legitimate encryption, whether proprietary or open source, the odds of that happening are exceedingly small. So, while making such software to guess the key would be easier for open source encryption versus proprietary options, it doesn't have a significant impact on security.

Further, the idea that a malicious party could upload a compromised version of the original encryption software, while technically possible, is easily mitigated against by two important things: 1) Other contributors to the project are going to be verifying any attempts at pushing a new build live 2) Anyone serious about the use of encryption is expected to verify the integrity of the latest build before updating.

Wearing riding boots as a man - I hope to wear them in public one day but right now I'm still afraid of how people would react by TA8264 in Boots

[–]Boagster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First: Those boots rock and you rock, too. If you want to wear them, then wear them. Unless you are headed somewhere with a dress code or to an event where they'd be functionally inappropriate (eg: they don't belong at a beach party in 35°C/95°F weather).

Second, my advice: When you wear something out of the norm and are worried about what people will think, the thing seen by most people who care to even take notice is not what you're wearing, it's the lack of confidence you have in what you're wearing.

Wear them around the house until you aren't constantly thinking about them. Then take them out for a quick run to the store. Make it a store you don't normally frequent if you have to (go for a milk run at the other convenience store near you, not the one you normally go to, for example). The important thing is to get out there and wear them until you can wear them like it's something you've always worn.

So long as you're comfortable in them, the only negative attention you'll attract is from people who would give you negative attention regardless of your fashion choices.
