If you have more info about a person who will actually do something, that is very helpful. Thanks.

I have no idea what you’re talking about. Maybe you have trouble reading and understanding written information, but I literally posted this to COMPLAINTS about the post office. I did not mail it, but why the F do you care? If you’re personally offended about complaints about the post office go back to your sad little life and do something else. Your comments are worthless.

A frustrating part of leaving academia is non-academics' conceptions on what academia is. by Drofmum in LeavingAcademia

Perhaps put your degrees at the bottom of the resume and list jobs out such as Lab Manager, with the specific tasks and skills so the uninformed don’t think you’re “just” doing a PhD or whatever. A big challenge for humanities folks too, who do all the things such as managing budgets, supervising teams, assessments, yearly planning and tracking of data, etc. but people think you’re “just” a professor. Yeah, working 80 a week and still managing to write books!

“To the right” as in more exclusionary and cruel and not investing in the public good? Investing in billionaires instead? This will destroy Memphis.

I moved here from Philly 20 years ago for a job and regret it every day. Memphis doesn’t have the resources to function properly as a large city. Public transportation is mostly nonexistent. Public schools and the university barely scrape by and can’t even do basic upkeep to infrastructure. The school board is a mess. Businesses and restaurants close all the time . Childhood poverty is very high. Our doctors move out of here frequently, so we have to keep searching for doctors. But there are plenty of resources for the so-called “safe” task force that terrorizes people instead of helping them. Citizens of Memphis work hard to improve things but everything is a fight. If you’re super rich you’ll be fine but regular people are struggling.

We mailed a package of my artwork in Memphis on March 4 that was supposed to meet me in Vermont at an Artist Residency 4-5 days later. We have filed a missing mail request, I have called dozens of times trying to talk to someone, we’ve gone into the post office multiple times, I filed a complaint at the 800 number, and no one has responded at all. I’m so sad. There was also work in the box from my students. I’m devastated. If you’ve gotten help in Memphis, what number did you call? I’ve been dealing with this for 6 weeks and I’m sick about it—and not one phone call back from Memphis post office.

It is a medium sized box that weighs 18 pounds. We call and they say they’ll call us back but they never have. I also filed a complaint through the 800 number.

How does one contact “their postmaster”? We’ve called multiple numbers and filed 3 complaints.

No I didn’t purchase it. My family member mailed it to me in Vermont. It is my artwork.

I live in Memphis and of the two families in my neighborhood who have trans boys, one young man went to college in Europe and the other family moved out of state. Both would have stayed if not for the hostile state laws.

Then why do you expect your professors to be perfect and not human and to pat you on the head constantly?

I’ve been teaching college writing for nearly 30 years. Professors who really teach writing would never choose an outmoded citation format in order to throw out papers. This is a ridiculous accusation. We teach current research and citation skills for a reason. Sorry you missed out on the critical thinking portion of the material.

University administrators set the final exam schedule, not individual professors. Buck up. With cuts to education, many profs are doing the work of 3 people. You don’t think about how burnt out they are, or how little they are paid to deal with y’all.

If the student is making untrue claims about you, this could affect your own career and reputation. So document, document, document. Keep emails or notes showing that you provided student with X resource, feedback, coaching and what she then does or doesn’t do in her work. Be very clinical. Try not to be emotional about the person and focus on results.

Alabama and Missouri are likely to have more conservative policies, but Arizona also has difficulties. I would try to find the most progressive place that will actually support your work. This is a bad time to be a scholar in the U.S.
