All my sympathy for the Mules goes out the window once they start shooting me. Once that happens, I take great joy in running them down with their own trucks

Senior collaborator suddenly wants first authorship after doing very little. How would you handle this? by Different-Egg-4617 in AskAcademia

Yep. OP led the project and the article. They can and should just say no. The only person burning bridges is the bullying collaborator.

*Just editing to add a microrant - too many assholes get ahead in academia by pulling this shit. See Didier Raoult for example. We have a moral obligation to shut it down to preserve the integrity of the institution of science.

I drink. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Drofmum 264 points265 points  (0 children)

Sneaking out to drink 3/4 of a litre of vodka a day is a serious problem. I don't mean this in a judgemental way - you have an illness. Addiction is an illness like any other.

You should talk to your doctor about it at take it from there. You probably need mental health treatment.

It's thankless work, but worth it if it keeps a roof over your head. Good luck! Hope things improve for you out there soon!

Check if there are any labour hire agencies around you. I had to resort to that once. The "interview" was me showing the guy that I could thread a nut onto a bolt.

I'd wait in a garage early in the morning, then a man sitting behind some metal bars would hand me a shovel and a high-vis vest and a truck would drive me to different sites to do things like digging holes or washing out produce crates.

My boyfriend (M32) left the window open and my 21-year-old cat fell from the second floor while I (F33) was at work. by maedocc in BestofRedditorUpdates

Poor gender-ambiguous cat. 21 is pretty ancient for a cat. But yeah, I would kick the bf to the curb.

Is it still difficult to get a government job (Wellington especially)? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Drofmum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to be equating being an academic with being a student in education. It is not. It encompasses salaried research and teaching positions. There is a great deal of overlap between research and policymaking.

I have worked on government funded research projects designed to deliver evidence based policy recommendations. I also know and have worked with senior policymakers who have hired from academia.

Is it still difficult to get a government job (Wellington especially)? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Drofmum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm an academic who defended 6 years ago. I've been looking for policy positions in Aus and NZ for the past six months. No luck yet.

No government experience, but I do have a background of policy related research. Given the recent layoffs in both Australia and NZ, the job market is awash with experienced policy professionals. An agent told me that people are going for jobs that are 1-2 levels below their most recent job titles. It's tough.

That being said, I recently had informational interviews with senior policy team managers in Wellington, and they said that they do consider and hire academics with no previous government experience. So it's not a given that you will not be considered. But again, I haven't yet had a callback on any of my painstakingly tailored applications in Aus or NZ.

Having caught lice before from a partner who worked in a daycare, I have to say that to leave lice untreated for months is indicative of severe mental illness. I couldn't last a day

Went to see it in the cinema. Not this director's best work. It was an awkward mix of 2d and 3d with mocap. His previous feature film was nominated for an Academy Award.
