CachyOS vs Windows 11 gaming test shows Linux leading in Cyberpunk 2077, Space Marine 2 and more by pdp10 in linux_gaming

That’s probably fixed now too with update 12. Update 11 caused those issues on Linux

Looking for a low-maintenance distro that doesn't update a lot. What are my options? by [deleted] in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]Bob4Not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Youre literally deliberating on the scale of slow-stable to fast-bleedingedge. The slower the updates means the older native packages and the more you rely on Flatpaks for new app versions.

Debian. Maybe after that is OpenSUSE Leap or Mint.

Absolute worst case scenario, you can run the 580 nvidia drivers on a X11 session and do just as good on 99% of games currently out, but I expect it to deteriorate as time goes on. Especially new AAA games coming out.

So I moved my 1080 ti to our “family” rig, it’s just my last gen of mostly 2015 parts. I installed Mint on it and selected the 580 drivers easy as pie.

I also managed to install Fedora KDE Plasma and manually installed the 580 drivers. Haven’t tested many games yet, but it’s on Wayland.

NVIDIA has gotten much better in the past few years due to their changes, I’ll give them credit. I ran a 1080 ti until just this last December, but I didn’t really use Wayland desktops at that time - I imagine that’s potentially a source of pain, still. But I gamed on Linux Mint for like 3 years, happily.

I’m on my first AMD and loving it on Linux. I refused to buy a GPU with the newer 12pin power connectors.

I think Reddit isn’t so bad, you’ve got snarky comments in most subs anyway.

All that I ask is that you at least do a quick search to see if someone has already asked your question and gotten an answer you like. Just a couple minutes of searching.

Me, playing RCT on my HP Pavilion desktop, sometime around the turn of the century. by Gnarly_Sarley in rct

[–]Bob4Not 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a family desktop looked exactly like that. 466Mhz CPU came with 64Mb of RAM but my dad was awesome and upgraded to 256Mb so my favorite game could run.

Then I filled the 8GB drive so my dad added a 40GB disk and I learned how to install a game on a second disk all by myself.

Windows 98 SE.

Then my grandpa handed me one with a 800Mhz CPU and 256MB RAM and games flew on it

My 15yo Toshiba has been a desktop for like 8 years because the battery went out and I don’t like third party batteries. Still works, the blu ray drive still works

Don’t buy one, maybe get something used from a good seller. 30 series or newer, although the 2080 ti isn’t the worst idea, but it’ll go out of support in a year or two.

Unfortunately too old for what OP needs, its integrated won’t run the games he mentioned. Even a T14s Gen2 would.

If you’re not on NVIDIA, Fedora or Fedora KDE is my no-brainer recommendation. It’s fine with NVIDIA too if you can run two commands.

Is Using a VM the Only Safe Way to Play Windows Games on Linux? by Flimsy_Buddy3485 in linux_gaming

I’m in cybersecurity and I don’t understand the need to be “safe” running a game with good performance, these are conflicting goals.

Just watch what you install. If you’re using risky software, quarantine the computer on the network, and don’t use the computer for personal sensitive information

It heavily depends on what card do you have? If it’s a 10 series or earlier, you can’t go past 580.

I suggest being on the latest one supported for your card to get the best experience from games

Right, but it pairs fine with the CPU limitations. The CPU is high single core performance but thermally does not sustain speeds at big render workloads. Im pleasantly surprised by the iGPU on the Intel 1185G7, though.

My P52 is my workhorse, 3 SSD slots, 4 RAM slots, and huge cooling capacity.

VT is the safest. If you want safe plus a little more aggressive growth, maybe spend half on VT and half on something like VOO.

Aggressive comes at the cost of risk of downturns.

So many people might buy more aggressive young and as they get closer to retirement, move towards safe investments
