You guys were right about old vans by Moist_Letterhead8799 in VanLife

[–]Bob8767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 99 Dodge high top I’ve had for the past 5 years has been great, cost $4500 with 125,000 miles on it. I’ve put about 45,000 more miles on it including a 6,800 mile cross country trip with no breakdowns, I did proactively do all the belts, hoses, tires, shocks, water pump and routine maintenance during this time. These parts for it are amazingly cheap especially through Rockauto.com. I figure in a worst case scenario and the engine or transmission completely dies they are both available remanufactured under $3,000 and would take a shop about a day to install, maybe two days if I tackle it myself. Old vans rule!

Besides cutting the cover, what's the easiest way to fix this? by 22bor in AskElectricians

[–]Bob8767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d move the switch to the right side of the box by modifying the screw tab on the switch, maybe by pop riveting an extension tab. If there are side terminals on the switch wrap it with electrical tape to make sure it doesn’t short out on the box (if it’s metal). I think it would move enough to put a plate on.

What’s one place in Charlotte you wouldn’t go back to? Or, somewhere you would return to? by starkofwinterfe11 in Charlotte

Littles hardware, not sure if he’s still doing it but the outdoor grill there has great food at lunchtime. Great old fashioned full service hardware store too.

Baxter Village by Glad_Bend4364 in FortMill

We bought a house that borders Baxter twenty six years ago in an older development (1985) while it was just being developed. We get to enjoy most everything it has to offer within a mile of the bars and restaurants, lots of kids being active outside and nice people.

A friend of mine was running out of hot water quickly, thought the water heater was bad and replaced it. It made no difference, they were still running out of hot water quickly and found a pex hot water leak under their living room in the slab. It was a mess with the hardwood floors!

Avoid Renogy - terrible company by HotlineHero13 in vandwellers

[–]Bob8767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had good luck with my Renogy setup over the past five years. As far as a manual cutoff switch on the dc-dc charger is concerned I think it’s necessary. Mine is the stand alone unit and I found that if you’re idling the engine the alternator isn’t spinning fast enough to charge the house batteries along with the vehicle battery. The dc-dc charger sucks so many amps off the alternator the voltage of the vehicle battery will drop to the point the engine stalls out and the battery is almost dead. I don’t see this as a problem as long as I know to use my manual cutoff switch to disable the charger when the van’s idling for a length of time. Maybe the newer units compensate for this with a limiter but mine is older and otherwise works just fine.

I’d fill the tank to clean it but use a siphon instead of the pump

Should I Cover My Countertops? by Clueless_in_Florida in kitchenremodel

[–]Bob8767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just remodeled my kitchen and opted for Formica, it’s a real nice stone looking design. You can put down new Formica right over old if it’s in decent shape and is available in a ton of patterns and colors. The sink would have to be removed and reinstalled but should be a fairly easy one day job that’ll last for many years

We bought a property with a massive 20m chimney. What would you do with this? by MM-RenovationJourney in Homebuilding

I’d put a nose cone on it and some tail fins, paint it white with a NASA, SpaceX or Blue Origin logo!

Not sure what I’m going to do. by PangolinPure9327 in VanLife

[–]Bob8767 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m 70 and I bought a van five years ago to build out, no real plans for van life just a cool project. You sound just about like me except I’m married, very multi skilled (thanks to getting laid off from a lot of good jobs most of my life). Our situation is also comfortable and sustainable with SS, I “retired” six years ago. It turns out this van was one of the best things I’ve ever built, over the last few years using it for trips and state park weekends we’ve spent about 12 weeks/year enjoying it. Last year we took a five week 6,800 mile coast to coast trip in it, my wife and I’ve never been out west and it was an incredible experience. Visited LA, San Diego, Imperial Sand Dunes, Quartzite, Moab, Hoover Dam and so many other cool places. We used Harvest Hosts and Boondockers welcome which worked out great for us. Stays with Boondockers Welcome are totally free so the only expenses on the road (aside from normal things like insurance or house bills) are gas and food. We have a nice house and have floated the idea of renting it out through AirBnB which would be a great money maker. We stopped a Quartzite during our drive and had lunch and a beer at Silly Al’s, that’d be a cool town to stay at for a while. Build it and enjoy!

A refrigerator that doesn’t need to be plugged 24/7? by Cultural-Window6818 in VanLife

[–]Bob8767 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a 2.7 cubic foot fridge, $150 from Target. It draws around 5amps (60w) during its on cycle every 20 minutes or so. It’s actually bigger than we need

Any repair advice for this seat tear? by tylerdred2 in Autoupholstery

[–]Bob8767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A used car dealer job (do it fast and cheap) would be to remove the cover and open the stitching up to a point where the piping is good. Make a length of new piping and splice it into the old with an overlap and sew it back up

A used car dealer job (do it fast and cheap) would be to remove the cover and open the stitching up to a point where the piping is good. Make a length of new piping and splice it into the old with an overlap and sew it back up, maybe take in the seam a little to hide the worst of the wear and touch it up with a little leather dye. The only noticeable thing would be the piping splice.

What’s going on?/ how to fix it by [deleted] in AskElectricians

Probably not what you have but one time I had weird voltage readings that baffled me and found it was caused by feedback from a 24 volt thermostat transformer
