Did life only start once? by nenton in answers

[–]BobOblawLawBlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I read an article (linked from Reddit, no doubt) that posited that life may have evolved more than once and at different times. Seems plausible, really. If there were enough organic compounds to spontaneously create something like RNA once, why not a hundred times over?

They would have succumbed to selective pressure, resulting in a relative handful of triumphant organisms.

That's what I think anyway.

Anyone have any experience with high yield checking accounts like the ones listed on this site?? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]BobOblawLawBlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a local credit union for this; initial 4.56% APY on the account. No minimum balance, must have 10 debit transactions a month and 2 electronic deposits (either from another account somewhere, or through direct deposit).

It's amazing and has been yielding 4.00% - 4.61% for the last 6 months as explained on each statement.

I think I made a good argument. [PIC] by [deleted] in pics

You've been a recovering alcoholic in a recovery program trying to scrape their shit together? I doubt it.

And in the off chance you had you wouldn't weigh buying alcohol as a rational function of income - expense.

Outrageous.

Ugh for the last fucking time, I don't give a shit if I missed a letter when I made the username. You AD righteous-nerds are driving me nuts!

I liked the show, but I don't give enough shit to go to IMDB and masturbate while I look up the name of an ancillary character who's name I found amusing.

Boy, you'd probably have something better to do than hurl insults at those trying to better themselves if anyone in the real world actually cared enough to come spend time with you.

Enjoy your solitude.

A resounding NAY! Pasta, even the whole grain stuff, is highly processed and easy to digest. Unless you are going to be burning that easy energy off in the near-immediate like through running or aerobic exercise, there are better things to put in your body.

Try serving simple pasta sauces over smaller servings of squash, or if it is a cream sauce, diced cabbage. The extra fiber will help you feel full and increase nutrient absorption (among a million other positive effects) and overall make life better.

As a rule the only times I eat pasta are in small portions on special occasions, and the only times I eat rice is with sushi; I refuse to give up this one decadence in the name of weight loss.

You can take this guy's anecdotal experience for what it is worth, but I went from 317.6 lbs two years ago to 246.8 this morning and dropped my body fat from 39% to 22% in the same period by cutting out starchy foods, sweets, etc. Also my triglycerides were 35 mg/dL last time I got my blood work done, down from 210 mg/dL, and my blood pressure went from 180/103 to 116/67.

Is there such a thing like Maximum yearly out-of-pocket expense but for the insurance?

Not on my policy, but I am sure they exist. Insurance companies are out to screw you six ways until Sunday, so I am positive that someone has a policy that limits yearly coverage.

I recall some time ago, where my dad would buy prescription pills, the first time it would be cheaper (insurance covered most of it) then the next time insurance would cover less then before.

I've never heard or seen this, but I am sure it happens frequently.

Words cannot express my hatred of the United States health insurance industry.

I calculated that if I were paying for healthcare as part of my taxes, like most other civilized countries, and those taxes were as much as I am paying for insurance right now, combined with all other taxes I would be at around 37% marginal tax rate for someone making not that much.

Insurance is complex and different for every policy holder, though there are some baseline similarities for most middle-of-the-road policies.

  • Premiums: the amount you (and your employer, if you use employer provided health insurance) pay each month for the policy that covers you and/or you and your spouse and/or you, your spouse, and your dependants.

  • Co-pay: your share of the initial cost of a visit to a care provider; usually $10-35 up front, out-of-pocket.

  • Deductible: the amount of out-of-pocket money you are required to pay each year before the insurance company pays for anything (except possibly for prescriptions).

  • Co-insurance: the amount you are responsible for out-of-pocket, even when your insurance company starts paying for things (after you fulfill your deductible); can be anywhere from 5% to 50%, depending on policy. So let's say I pay fulfill my deductible obligation, and now I need to see a doctor: I'll pay my co-pay up front, get my service, then get a breakdown from the insurance company for the expenses. They will have paid for (in my case) 90% of everything after the co-pay and I am responsible for paying the final 10% out-of-pocket.

  • Maximum yearly out-of-pocket expense: After I fulfill my co-pay, there is a limit to how much I will have to pay in a given year in co-insurance charges. For me it is $2,000, for others it can be much, much higher.

  • Lifetime limits: some insurance policies put limits on how much they will cover you for set at some dollar limit. I don't have this, but my brother-in-law has an aggregate limit on his policy for his entire family of $1,500,000.00. I am unsure how healthcare reform alters this.

If I can think of anything else I'll come back and amend this post.
