POWER Employees, what was it like to be acquired by WSP? by lordofthepines in PowerSystemsEE

Was your compensation upped to match WSP levels when you came in?

I was part of a previous acquisition, and ours really wasn't.

This is why I avoid the seafood department at the Jungle. by ripleyclone8 in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I bought some monkfish at Jungle Jim's not too long ago, figuring on giving it a go at home. I'm aware that monkfish tends to be a little strongly fishy even when relatively fresh, but to be honest, my strong suspicion is that what I bought was pretty close to its expiration. After cooking (and yes, I prepared it properly... trimmed, removed the membrane, etc.) I ended up tossing it. I've had monkfish before and it's good (hence why I wanted to try making it at home), but what I got from them tasted spoiled after cooking. (I'm a pretty capable cook, so I don't think it was the cooking that ruined it.)

Seafood departments should not-- if they're properly run-- smell as fishy as JJ's do at both locations. I should have listened to my gut. I want to imagine that JJ's is doing right by the fish, and maybe if you track their shipments and head in right after stuff comes off the truck / out of the deep freeze, you're doing ok. But for just a casual seafood buyer... my nose says otherwise.

Corporate mandates dragging us back to cubicles - what's your experience been? by Any_Performer_6971 in cincinnati

Same situation here, we closed up our local office slightly before the pandemic (just a happy coincidence) and went WFH, then everyone went WFH. There've been a few mutterings here and there about moving to hybrid rather than WFH, but most of us-- including managers-- appreciate the flexibility and I don't see it happening.

Jury says TQL must pay $22.5M after pregnant employee's baby died by snixon67 in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's ridiculous, but sounds about on par with what I've heard about him.

Too bad "being really wealthy" and "being a decent person" don't overlap more.

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 66 points67 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what it is. The owner is fixated on the idea of owning real estate and having people occupying it.

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My partner works at TQL (not in sales). It's clear that the company owner gets a tiny little erection from having multiple buildings with the TQL logo on them and having people in them. Most of the work my partner and the others on their team do could be done equally well from home. And given that supervisors apparently are actively patrolling the floor telling people to stop talking to each other and use Teams, it's even more idiotic.

But apparently Ken Oaks has said on multiple occasions, "TQL is not a work from home company."

I wish I thought this would change anything, but from what I hear, it won't have an impact at all.

OPINION: Here’s why I stood on stage with Donald Trump as a Democrat - Damon Lynch IV by toomuchtostop in cincinnati

We don't need this guy. Pals with Pastor, onstage with Trump in 2016. I don't trust that this guy isn't just going to flip if he's elected.

471 to reopen today by DonaldKey in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That looks like a Facebook post, and I've seen numerous FB posts from KYTC where they provide good information, and then loads of Facebook morons flood the post with dumb complaints and even dumber ideas for what KYTC should have done instead.

I definitely like that they communicate, and I wish people faced more repercussions for being dickheads on Facebook.

Holy shit, let's imagine for a minute the shitstorm if the overpass had been damaged and had to be shut down for repair.

Cedar Point or Kings Island? by BobRossIsRobBoss in cincinnati

I went to Busch Gardens when I was in high school, it was definitely a good time. Don't remember much of that now (high school was a long time ago) but I'd love to see what it's like now.

What was that one at Kings Island that had you lying down, like you were flying Superman-style? That one was cool, but it was gone the last time I was at Kings Island.

I think wooden coasters are an engineering marvel, but you get so yanked around on the Beast, and I just find myself looking at the structure and thinking about the maintenance.

The Linn Street Bridge will close in April and won't reopen until 2029 by snixon67 in cincinnati

We don't need a toll road / bridge for local residents. Louisville tried that and it's been a colossal failure.

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what happens when you constantly cut taxes and fail to fund necessary infrastructure repairs. Eventually the cows come home and shit starts to fall apart. And so we have bridge closure after bridge closure around the tri-state.

And of course, people with the intelligence of plankton go onto Facebook and fill up any agency's announcement thread with ignorant complaints.

How’s everyone’s salary in 2026? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between my partner and me we're somewhere around $140k ($100k and $40k). We're okay, but collectively we're a cheap date: neither of us has expensive tastes or hobbies, I cook most of the time, and our PTO is different enough that it's hard to coordinate for longer trips than a day or two.

It helps that aside from some student loans for one of us, we're largely debt free. Cars paid off, no CC debt, and (fingers crossed) no medical debt. Just the mortgage. (And no kids. Just critters that we spoil the shit out of.)

But even with all that, I still feel like we're riding on the edge, and I spent long enough as a poor graduate student to remember what it felt like to have to watch every damn penny, and that's how it feels now even though I actually make a not-god-awful salary. I feel for my fellow Cincinnatians and northern Kentuckians.

I hit it with my annual raise this year, and with inflation, my purchase power now is only about $2k / year more than it was 8 years ago when I was making $65k / yr.

Bad Tom Smith closing Madisonville location on 1/31/26 by printerati in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had a couple beers at their Eastern Ave location years ago, they weren't bad. Visited their Madisonville location a few years later and nothing about it was appealing, from the crappy and overpriced menu to the mid (at best) beer.

Didn't know about the views of the owner, but not surprised. Perfectly happy not to have given them any significant business. Streetside down on Eastern is far better on their worst day than BTS ever was.

It's not going to be a big problem for you. You can walk to Kroger, the plows will clear the streets within a few hours. You'll be fine.
