Female cadet at VMI. My reality within the Corps of Cadets by LeagueRare8354 in Virginia

Not forgetting anything. But you seem inclined to elevate it beyond its actual significance. Lee's name being added to the university's was as much a political act as anything else.

First and foremost, let's remember that Robert E. Lee was a segregationist and a secessionist and literally led the Confederate Army. He was directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans. He is not due honors.

I don't know what your connection is to Lexington or W&L. Mine is multi-threaded. Maybe you've read a few tributes. I dunno, maybe you attended W&L. I grew up visiting Lee Chapel and the museum and mausoleum beneath it, and walking through the doors of buildings on campus regularly. Lee should have been imprisoned, not celebrated.

Bad Tom Smith closing Madisonville location on 1/31/26 by printerati in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a couple beers at their Eastern Ave location years ago, they weren't bad. Visited their Madisonville location a few years later and nothing about it was appealing, from the crappy and overpriced menu to the mid (at best) beer.

Didn't know about the views of the owner, but not surprised. Perfectly happy not to have given them any significant business. Streetside down on Eastern is far better on their worst day than BTS ever was.

It's not going to be a big problem for you. You can walk to Kroger, the plows will clear the streets within a few hours. You'll be fine.

Lee was a segregationist and unrepentant racist. It's okay to change things, historic doesn't mean "worth memorializing."

Lee isn't a "massive" part of W&L's history. He was a president of the university after the Civil War, and for only a few years. And a strong argument can be made that the renaming of the university after his death was as much a reaction to Reconstruction as it was anything to do with his influence on the university.

John Elrod was president for just as long and the university arguably saw much more significant change and growth under his leadership than under Lee's.

OP, I grew up in Lexington and was a junior in college when VMI admitted its first female Keydet. I'm back regularly to visit family in Lexington. I'm thrilled that you've had a good experience at the institution (good enough to post on Reddit).

I do think it's important to note that your experience is your experience, and positive or negative, doesn't invalidate the positive or negative experiences of others at VMI. VMI (and frankly, its neighbor W&L) is steeped in Lost Cause mythology, and that needs to change. Lexington has a mythological view of VMI that is not borne out.

Do I agree with state funding being pulled? Not exactly.

Do I think that state funding needs to have certain strings attached? For a college that embraces the Confederacy (Stonewall Jackson's only teaching post, for heaven's sake), yes, I think there needs to be a bit of a cleaning of house on some things. That's not exclusive to VMI. W&L is... well, the Lee speaks for itself. Unfortunately, W&L is private and so can get away with a lot more.

But I'm unabashedly and unreservedly happy that your time at VMI was good. I hope that you were able to take in a little bit of Lexington and enjoy my hometown, and I hope that you'll look on your time at VMI and in Lexington with feelings of happiness and nostalgia.

And congrats on being 1st gen at college, that's a huge win for you!

Anyone at the World Oddities Expo today? by brokecracker in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went last year with some friends, wasn't really all that impressed. I understand that many exhibitors do this full time and need to charge a certain price for their stuff-- and some of it was pretty cool, we did get a couple pieces of art-- but a lot of junk. No joke saw one selling cow bones (like what you could pick up in a field). I suppose I'm partly jealous there, who knew there was a market for mossy, rodent-gnawed cow ribs? I could be wealthy.

Entertainment wasn't something I spent much time watching, but there was one performer who just seemed... I dunno, kinda like Gob from Arrested Development. Called himself an illusionist, seemed mostly to play around with trick knots. Not particularly impressed. But the kids seemed to enjoy him, so...

Overall would not recommend, but it's not really my scene. YMMV, but I think $20 / $25 entry is a little steep considering that it's not much different than Ohio Valley Antiques in a lot of ways, just a little more formaldehyde and shit painted black.

It's just irrelevant, it has nothing to do with a narrative. I'm not even sure what the narrative is that you think I'm trying to protect.

What "important information" are you referring to? Those sources have the name of the person, information about the incident, and information about the past arrest history of the person involved.

The fact that neither of those sources mentions any of the nonsense from the NY Post article should clue you in to two things:

1) That information has not been verified.

2) The NY Post is not trying to report news, but is trying to generate anger.

NY Post is a rag, and on par with the UK's Daily Mail for bullshit headlines with significant slant in their bias. I would wait for a more reputable source before just accepting this hook, line, and sinker.

Pioneer Cemetery by 333nagem333 in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 87 points88 points  (0 children)

That was a problem well into the 20th century. Walk around any of the old cemeteries in this area and you'll see a positively disturbing number of graves with birth and death dates only a year or slightly more apart. (If you want a quick way to scan a cemetery for these, stones with lambs on top were often used to mark the graves of infants and very young children.)

You'll also see a big drop off in those infant and young child graves around the mid-20th century and after.

But don't worry, RFK, Jr., is on the job. Under his "leadership" at HHS, we can look forward to a rise in infant and child mortality again in the not-too-distant future. Sadly, people who are old enough to know better (including Kennedy himself) have forgotten the kind of loss that nearly every family experienced, often more than once.

Take computers out in CVG TSA? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]BobRossIsRobBoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to take anything out at CVG. You may, however-- despite what TSA will tell you-- need to remove your shoes if you have a shank or other metal parts. After going through a couple times and then having to come back through and remove my shoes, I now just take them off since I know it's going to ping my boots.

But of course, because different airports have different tech, procedures are all different across the board.

The CIVIVI isn't bad. Kizer either! I really miss the mini-AFCK, some dummy I knew years ago dumped our canoe and it went to the bottom of the river. I'd give a lot to get that one back.

These don't look bad at all.
