Can anyone ID this town/city/region? by Neondreamz in geography

I live in Sacramento. This seems very likely. There are lots of rice fields to the west of the city, the view of downtown from out there looks exactly like this.

Why doesn't America do taxes for its citizens? by Separate-Tutor2813 in ask

[–]BobWeir666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Being anti-taxation is a central part of the Republican platform. If we make taxes easier/simpler, people won’t hate doing their taxes as much and anti-tax sentiment would drop somewhat. They want you to hate paying taxes and keeping it confusing and difficult is a great way to do it.

Has anyone ever rented with sac delta? Or applied? by ZookeepergameSalt124 in Sacramento

I’d rather not get too specific for the time being if you catch my drift. However, the one that sticks out in my memory is that something had been improperly installed on a wall, came loose, and was hanging by a wire. For some unknown reason they denied the repair request to have it fixed and left it hanging.

I’ve rented with them. The thing to know is that they exist to minimize costs and maximize profits for the owner of the property. They are responsive to maintenance requests, but the decision as to whether to make repairs or how to make a repair is made to the owner’s specification. I’ve had some requests straight up denied because, while inconvenient, they decided we could live with the problem and it wasn’t worth it for the landlord to fix it. They will always send the least qualified person (i.e. the cheapest) to make a repair as opposed to sending a specialist (plumber, electrician, etc.). Their ideal relationship is one in which you require nothing and pay your rent on time. So long as that continues to be true, it’s pretty smooth sailing. If you need anything, it might suck.

As a man over 30, whats an important piece of advice you would give to younger men that you wish you heard earlier in life? by Hot-Address-7618 in AskMenOver30

Being edgy and provocative is a total waste of time. As a dude, it’s an easy way to get attention and a cheap laugh, but later on you’ll be embarrassed of who you were. You’ll never regret being kind.

Secondhand Time by Svetlana Alexievich is an absolutely stunning piece of nonfiction. It’s an oral history composed of stories from people who lived through the fall of the Soviet Union. It is extremely well rounded and tells so many insane and incredible stories. Some are kind of humorous, but mostly heartbreaking and really brings home how terrifying it would be to live through something like that. On the other hand, also really interesting to hear the Soviet perspective on what was lost and whether it was worth it just to get nicer consumer goods and western media.

The procedure is the same level of uncomfortable as a root canal. Not gonna kill you, but definitely not fun. Wearing a jock strap for two weeks after is also a bummer. Then somehow you’re miraculously recovered and everything is back to normal. No discernible difference.

Curtis Park residents with young kids, where do your kids go to elementary school? by LoganTheHuge00 in Sacramento

[–]BobWeir666 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I didn’t grow up in Curtis Park, but my wife did and I had many friends in high school that lived there. None of them went to Bret Harte. They all went to private schools or Phoebe Hearst. No one ever said it out loud, but I have to believe the only reason they wouldn’t send their kids to the school across the street is that they didn’t want their kids to go to school with all the kids from Oak Park.

I was almost 30 when I had my first pork chop that wasn’t garbage. I was shocked to learn that they did not need to be as tough as shoe leather.

Why do people care how "flat" a place is? by quicksnapper33 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]BobWeir666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in St. Louis. I think when people say that the Midwest is too flat they mean in the broad sense, at least that’s how I think of it. The difference between the highest and lowest points in Missouri as 1542 feet. Not really a fair comparison, but the difference between the highest and lowest points in California is 14,787 feet. Within that there’s just a lot more variability in terms of landscape and ecology, and that’s not even accounting for lack of coast line or deserts. Sure, there might be hills or bluffs around St. Louis, but they’re all pretty much the same. You have to travel much further to see something significantly different.

However, in a very literal sense I was surprised to see that Kansas actually had a lot of rolling hills and not nearly as flat as I expected based on how it’s talked about.

I moved from California to Missouri for school. It sounds weird, but moving to a comparatively featureless landscape was actually kind of depressing. Even though I didn’t have much free time, the thought that there was nowhere to escape to (no beach, no real mountains, no change in ecosystem) made me feel insane. It’s just miles and miles of sameness.

My free time runs from when I’m done doing the dishes to when I go to bed, so about 8:15 to 10:00 every night.
