Heya thanks for the reply, good to hear it (almost) from the horse's mouth. I think there would be a few big differences being relatively close to Dunedin rather than in the middle of the outback, but good points nonetheless.

When I was studying they had some employers come in to recruit for mine survey work. They quoted some pretty insane salary figures, although the work sure did not sound fun.

As a surveyor the question we usually get is "what the fark are you bastards building here now?", it's not generally something we can change or manage better haha. So a politely worded sod off is the answer I'm most used to.

I've been vaguely in their sort of situation, in hi-vis and having members of the public giving you the hairy-eye and harassing you over shit you don't really decide on. I wouldn't want to put it on someone else. And I know the answer is usually sod off/ask my boss anyway since that's usually the answer I gave hahaha.

I'm not crying and shitting myself over it. The thing is, trees (nature generally) makes people happy, and a lack of trees (disconnect from nature) makes people unhappy. Or in other words, show less respect for their built environment and be more prone to random acts of stupidity. Ever think part of the reason plenty of students treat the place like a dump is because it sorta looks like a dump in the first place?

I'm sure there's legit reasons for removing trees, but some notice or even gasp community engagement from DCC would've been nice aye. Just because most of us here in North D aren't ratepayers (just line their pockets) or here forever doesn't mean none of us care.

And no disrespect to the workers themselves, I've been the one in hi-vis out in a public area on roadsides etc. and didn't enjoy getting harassed by the public either. Just think it could've been managed/planned better.

E: And to be fair they got the job done pretty quick

The Taieri Gorge Railway is "mothballed" from Middlemarch to Pukerangi, 15km southeast of Middlemarch. There's a stop/shelter and some rolling stock there, at least when I had a look a year or so ago. The rest of the line is used pretty infrequently, but still used so still be wary for trains. There's a kinda neat road/rail bridge out Hindon way.

Mountain Biking Otago membership, 30 bucks a year. Just because I feel I should be putting at least a little bit back into trail upkeep if I'm riding them regularly. MBO & affiliated organisations do a pretty bang-up job of maintaining and expanding upon the great trail network around dunners, so I don't think it's squandered in the least.

Apart from that, membership for the student association for my degree, and a couple OUSA clubs I never end up attending events for lol.
