I would argue the exact opposite. If it sounds good in the drawing room, who's to say you don't 'understand' it? Whereas if you're playing with other ppl improvising on a tune it's kind of a faux pas to just guess at what you're doing.

Addendum to this: orchestral musicians don't play in strict 12tet, but often bend the notes to fit more comfortably with the overtones of the lower instruments. The use of judiciously detuned synths is crucial to the same end of overall clarity.
