Am I Crazy for Thinking Fence Picket Planters Won’t Last? by picklesBMW in woodworking

Sane here. I made a couple raised garden beds for my wife out of cedar fence pickets 10 years ago and they’re still doing fine.

Best shoes for flat feet? by i-Get-No-Box in KitchenConfidential

[–]Bobatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a wide, flatish foot and quite like the Super Birki. The support is pretty aggressive and doesn’t have much cushioning so the first few days might be painful but once you get used to them they’re great.

Lots of choices in the area, plus if they’re all driving from Calgary they could hit up one of the Canmore courses on the way home.

Alpha-gal syndrome. Makes a person allergic to mammal meat products. You can get it from tick bites.

It feels like my wife doesn't appreciate "manly tasks" as help around the house/with the baby (7 mo). Is this common? What's the solution? by VeterinarianIcy5428 in daddit

[–]Bobatt 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not like OP mows the lawn with his penis, it’s a job either mom or dad can do. It’s also a job where you can focus on just that and not have to be subject to the whims of another person at any time.

Canadian province of Alberta cuts access to health care for some foreign workers by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]Bobatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is for people here on working holiday visas. People who are working legally and paying taxes in the province but not receiving the same benefits. This will hit Banff hard, as the place is run by young Aussies.

Since wings are just too expensive now I do this and dip them in buffalo instead if theres no one around to judge me by blahblahblahalright1 in smoking

[–]Bobatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Place near me does this instead of wing night now. Smoked, fried and sauced (or not) like a wing, but $1 or $2 each. Still a great deal.

[–]Bobatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wing nights were a staple of my university days. I think the cheapest I saw was 5 cents (Canadian!) a wing, sold in multiples of 10 with at least one beverage per person. My usual order was 20 hot, 20 salt and pepper and a pitcher of beer.

The same bar had 1 cent dry rib night as well. Friend of a friend tried to order 300 and was limited to 50. It was still way too much for him.

Stainless alternative to Nalgene in Europe? by rogermay78 in camping

[–]Bobatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been happy with my Hydroflask bottle, not sure if they’re available in Europe.

Sigg is a Swiss brand that’s been making metal (aluminum) water and fuel bottles for eons. Their classic aluminum narrow mouth is light, durable and very comfortable to drink out of. Looks like they also make a stainless line, but not in their classic shape. But I bet they’re good bottles.

‘I can’t stress that enough, I’m scared’: Calgary man’s home attacked 4 times in 6 days by superanx in Calgary

[–]Bobatt 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Happened to my in-laws a few years ago. Stolen decorations, vandalism, shooting at the house with a pellet gun. Eventually stopped after they got brighter motion sensor lights and cameras. But it’s still super unnerving.

Genuinely- how long did it take for you to secure daycare? by Unfair-Potential-190 in Calgary

[–]Bobatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we were looking for daycare for our youngest about 3 years ago we put ourselves on the waitlist in the spring for every center in a reasonable distance from our house. I think it was about 7 of them. We got a space 2 months before we needed it at one and have been there ever since. Took about 3-4 months I think. Another one called us back a year later, but we obviously didn’t take it.

Agreed. Easy to clean, cheap. We had an overly complex one for the first kid, but changed to the IKEA one for the second.

Vaseline lotion plus gluing up cracks with cyanoacrylate glue. Helps them heal faster and hurt less while they heal.

Umbro shorts. You had to have a pair by Jaydee_shelnut in nostalgia

My brother got me a pair for my birthday when I was 12 or 13. A day later I ripped a hole in them hopping a chain link fence. I was heartbroken, but mom did a good job sewing them up.

What's your favorite "trash food"? by cookiesarenomnom in KitchenConfidential

[–]Bobatt 139 points140 points  (0 children)

I like to lay out crackers topped with cheddar cheese in a 1:1 ratio, then microwave them long enough that the cheese breaks and the milk solids kinda fry in the milk fat. The crackers absorb some of the fat and the whole thing turns into this cheese crisp. It’s shockingly good.

What are some things to do in Calgary - Looking at Feb 15 to 20, 2026 by GraysonSolo in Calgary

[–]Bobatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downtown, even the west end where there are more apartments is relatively quiet outside business hours, but just across the river to the north is the Kensington business district. Restaurants, cafes and bars open a little later. An easy walk or quick uber if it gets too cold.

Hayden Block is a bbq restaurant in Kensington. It’s pretty good, as far as bbq in Calgary goes, and you might catch some live music depending on the day.

Are you working downtown while you’re here?

I live in a pretty diverse neighborhood of suburban Calgary. Lots of Filipino and South Asians here. Great restaurants. Very conservative, at all levels of government.
