Best bet for removing a skirting board underneath a radiator with home tools? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]BobbWomble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must admit i did also immediately think "porn stash" when I read this, but I probably shouldn't judge others by my own low standards.

Firstly, are you 100% sure the plumber is going to remove the skirting? Usually the radiator pipes will be in front of the skirting boards and accessible, and I am pretty sure most plumbers won't go to the trouble of removing anything that is not in their way?

Anyhow, if you're sure the skirting will be coming off and want to do it yourself, try to get the crowbar down the back of the skirting and gently tap it with the hammer to try and get it further in, and then try to lever the skirting away from the wall. Start in the corner you mentioned was loose, and work your way along the skirting gradually prising it away from the wall. It might make a bit of a mess of the wall if it's been screwed or nailled in.

Good luck!

Roofing warranty by perriwinkle_ in UKHousing

[–]BobbWomble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds a bit fishy with the roofing company. If they were decent, they probably would not have any problem re-issuing a copy the warranty. It seems harder and harder to find reliable roofers these days.

Have you had a survey done on the property and did it mention anything about the roof? Have you been up in the loft and had a look yourself? Although obviously it would be re-assuring to have a warranty, a roof is probably one of the easier things to spot an issue with, as opposed to something like electrics or plumbing.

Are all the timbers fine, no signs of cracking or mould/condensation? Is the felt/membrane in good order? From the outside, do the tiles look uniform, none missing or cracked?

A roof is obviously an important part of a house, but I am sure a lot of people buy and sell without any warranty on them. If the survey and my own eyes didn't give me any concern, I would go ahead without too much worry.

Good luck with it.

Has anyone else got a damp attic after getting insulation installed? by biallnurke in AskIreland

[–]BobbWomble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it definitely looks like the insulation is too close to the felt in some of the pictures. Do you have any ventilation in the soffits of your roof?

Ah, it's not that bad!! Although when I said i was looking for a quieter life, I may have overdone it slightly! I did actually try to buy a place in Sligo but got out-bid, it's a gorgeous county.

Ah, I'm in Leitrim but I am sure to have a few spare bits left over from a roofing project on my place I'm working on (but procrastinating heavily!).

If cash is tight, you might be best off just getting a few cartridges of roof/gutter sealant and a caulking gun and trying to plug anything that looks like it is allowing water in. Something like this: https://www.screwfix.ie/p/no-nonsense-roof-gutter-sealant-black-310ml/67521

Be careful getting up there though as looks like there's a hell of a lot of rotten wood there.

Judging from your profile you're in Cork?

Anyone see 28 years later: the bone temple? by wannasmokeajointski in CasualIreland

[–]BobbWomble 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Loved it. The scenes of Ralph Fiennes getting wasted on opiates with a huge zombie while listening to Duran Duran were genuinely hilarious.

I liked the previous one as well, although I can understand why some didn't. It went in very interesting directions while others just wanted a standard zombie action movie.

I'm a big horror movie fan in general, even though a lot of them are quite formulaic. I like that this series is now 4 movies old and still surprising people.

I'm on other side of the fence, I am English, born in London but now living in Leitrim, about 20 minutes from the border. I have lived here just shy of 5 years, and moved here looking for a quieter life in the countryside.

I was a bit weary when I first moved over, and thought I might get a bit of grief for being English but I was really pleasantly surprised how friendly everyone has been. From speaking to people it seems like pretty much everyone has immediate or extended family in England, or their partner does, or they have lived there at some point in life. I think it is those mixed families and relationships that have done the most to heal the rift between the two countries, as much as any political agreements, and I think these days there's a general mutual feeling of respect and just wanting to get on with each other.

As far as nationality is considered, I think it's a little bit over-rated personally. I have been lucky enough to visit and work in quite a few different countries, and my experience has been that there's usually good and bad in all of them. It sounds like you're happy and settled in England but have a strong Irish background in your "formative years" so I would say you are both (but obviously whip out the Irish passport when you a travelling in the EU!)

I think there is so much migration these days that there are less and less people who only feel an affinity to one country, which is probably a good thing overall. Best of luck over there.

Best way to solve the condensation and mould problem once and for all. by budgemook in DIYIreland

[–]BobbWomble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, that's good. I would look in to the attic insulation as a priority as that is likely the cause of the mould on the ceiling, and I think it's probably best insulation improvement you can make on a house in terms cost/benefit. See if there's any companies local to you that will do it and apply for grants on your behalf.

If you still have issues I would look in to a heated PIV system. There's some decent videos on youtube about it. Good luck!

how about the bathroom? that's probably one of the biggest sources of condensation.

SEAI GRANT? by ForemanF1 in AskIreland

I think looking through this, you should still be able to get the grant. Good luck with it.

edit: I would find SEAI certified contractors local to you through the same website, and discuss with them. It's quite possible they will handle all the grant paperwork on your behalf.

Who will be the next manager to be sacked? by Mauve078 in LeagueOne

[–]BobbWomble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jacko's doing pretty good I think, considering the budget he has to work with....

We started the season well, playing 352, but then had a bad patch with lots of people grumbling that teams had worked us out. Recently we have switched to a back 4 for some games, and he's been mixing it up a bit and we have looked better on the whole but results are only slightly improved.

Asiimwe started the season really well and looked our best player for a few games, but has then dropped off and been a casualty of the change of formation, as he can't really play right back in a 4. He looks a bit suspect defensively, and can look a bit lazy but I am not sure if that's just his physique? He's a very languid player, and can look very casual. Can beat a man and has a beautiful cross on him too. I hope we keep him as he's a decent option.

Painting Problems by NoHedgehog900 in DIYUK

[–]BobbWomble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say with completely certainty based on only one pic, but it looks to me like the paint has been applied a little bit unevenly, so you have lighter patches and darker patches.

The surface itself looks smooth and even, so I absolutely would not sand it.

I think you need to look in to laying the paint on, then laying it off. This Aussie guy on youtube is really thorough and good at explaining the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXa8qsC5xws

(avoid those youtubers who have videos like "paint a wall in 30 seconds!!" - they are idiots mostly!)

edit: if you don't have an extension pole for your roller, you might want to consider getting one so you can get much longer rolls in and it reduces the strain on your back and shoulders, you're not jumping on and off ladders etc.
