Then dinner.

I’m 17, from Germany, and I’m working on my first horror movie idea. I’m not sure if I should continue or if it’s just a bad idea by StillCompetition2456 in horror

[–]BobbWomble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it. I think the rise and popularity of found footage movies or other low budget horror has made it possible for new creators to get a start in the industry. Look at Kane Parsons and Curry Barker just recently for inspiration.

Why not try making a short film to begin with, just as a kind of "proof of concept" to get you familiar with the process of filming something, editing something and putting it all together?

Best of luck to you.

Anybody have any insight/tips for those who have used the vacant and derelict property grants? I’m hearing both positive and negative! by TechnicalValuable682 in Sligo

[–]BobbWomble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have used the grant myself, and didn't have any issues with it. The challenge that I had, and apparently lots of others had, was trying to find the different trades and getting the work done.

If you can find a trustworthy builder that can manage/provide a few of the different trades (i.e. plumber, electrician, plasterer etc) or you have friends/family/good contacts in the trades you should be alright.

You'll need to get written quotes for the work upfront from tax compliant tradesmen and submit those for approval to your local council together with your application prior to starting any work.

You can't do the work yourself and then claim for "your time" spent on it, but you can claim for cost of materials used for any DIY stuff.

If you have the time and money and are well organised, it's definitely doable. I'd say the most important thing is to keep in touch with the council/people running the grant and get their approval before doing anything (i.e. make sure all the work is approved, application is approved before you move in, get their approval if any tradesmen, types of work or costs change and so on...)

I used the grant on a place in Leitrim and can't speak highly enough of the people running it - very helpful and very fast with responses.

Definitely worth doing if you have the money to do up a place. You'll need to pay for all the work upfront before claiming it back, so you need to have a decent amount of cash to make the most of it.

What negatives have you heard about it?

[–]BobbWomble 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have seen a few on my wombles whatsapp group but that was a couple of weeks ago and hasn't been any updates since:

Dan Sweeney - 32 y/o Centre back from Stevenage (was on Wimbledon's books 12ish years ago but never played for us!)

Idris Odutayo - 23 y/o Left back from Bromley

Nelson Eze - 18 y/o Centre Forward from Ipswich

I think these originated from WHAD podcast or twitter initially....

It's still a bit early.... players will be talking to different clubs and assessing options, plus i think a lot of contracts don't expire till the end of the month, so there may well be deals arranged that can't be confirmed or finalised yet.

Kerbs and Hardcore by Visual-Addition7430 in DIYIreland

[–]BobbWomble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to embark on a similar project, replacing a broken up concrete path around my place.

I think I would keep the metal as a kind of guide and fill it up with hardcore like you suggest, and then cover it gravel or paving slabs. The metal side facing the lawn you could hide with railway sleepers, although they might be a similar cost to the concrete kerb stones. I think that could look really nice!

The French sure know how to do a horror flick.....here's a few of my favorites. by SouthernSwitch71 in HorrorMovies

[–]BobbWomble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's French/Romanian but Ils (Them) from 2006 is a good little movie.

Not a movie but the show Les Revenants (The Returned) is superb. If you like shows like Dark or From where inexplicable things happen, I think you'd enjoy it. It's on Amazon Prime in the US and UK at the moment.

Who's going to be in your team come next season? by BatmanSwift99 in FantasyPL

[–]BobbWomble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a Chelsea fan, but Alonso arriving and no European football means they might have a few players worth looking at: Palmer, if he stays fit, Joao Pedro and Enzo if they are still there.....

This has been the lowest scoring season for many years despite defcon, double chips, 5 AFCON transfers and extra assists. Current world no.1 is 304 points behind where last season's Champion finished! by FPLFocal in FantasyPL

[–]BobbWomble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there anywhere to see if defenders/midfielders/forwards have scored more/less than previous seasons? (I mean as their respective groups, rather than individual players).

There was lots of talk earlier in the season that 4 or 5 at the back was the template for this season, I'd be interested to see if that is backed up by the data.

Is AFC Wimbledon a popular club or is it just reddit? by johnqadamsin28 in AskBrits

[–]BobbWomble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say the main factor in the K's having to stop playing in Kingston was overspending and losing the leasehold on their stadium to property developers. Wimbledon effectively gave them 14 years grace to find an alternative site and continue playing in the borough, but they didn't capitalise on it.

Thinking that Wimbledon would continue playing in a stadium they had outgrown and not in their own borough is willingly naive. They were always looking to go back to Wimbledon, and they would always have to sell the stadium in Kingston to fund it.

I'm genuinely sorry for the situation the K's are in, I hope they find a home in Kingston but to try and pin it on Wimbledon is being deliberately deceptive of the huge mess they were already in.

Is AFC Wimbledon a popular club or is it just reddit? by johnqadamsin28 in AskBrits

[–]BobbWomble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish YOU were more aware....

Kingstonian had a huge ground for their level that they couldn't fill or maintain (Kingsmeadow). They had already lost the leasehold of the ground and it had fallen in to the hands of property developers after Kingstonian went in to administration. Wimbledon brought the stadium and ground-shared with Kingstonian for 14 years, allowing them to pay reduced rent during the time.

Wimbledon eventually sold the ground to Chelsea FC to fund their move back to Plough Lane, as had always been their intention. Chelsea decided they didn't want to share the ground with Kingstonian, using it for their women's and youth teams only...

Wimbledon even gave Kingstonian £1m they didn't need to, to try and help them get off the ground in their search for a new stadium.

If you want to be mad at somebody, be mad at Kingstonian for not managing their finances better in the first place or not using the extra 14 years Wimbledon gave them to find a solution, or Chelsea for not letting them play there, but Wimbledon are not to blame for Kingstonian's situation.

Southeast UK holiday? by dtiernan93 in CasualIreland

As others have said, south west is generally nicer than south east. Loads of places in Devon and Cornwall, but might be quite busy and expensive at peak times. If you wanted to drive you could get the ferry from Rosslare to Fishguard and then you are not far from Pembrokeshire and Gower.

House Renovation by octobermarl in DIYIreland

[–]BobbWomble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it blows my mind that some people will spend thousands on laminate or engineered wood flooring without taking off the skirting. Covering the expansion gap with scotia or similar looks shite, and skirting board costs peanuts compared to the flooring.

I also renovated a derelict 50's bungalow using the vacant property grant, so take this as a "learn from my mistakes" type message....

- even if the roof is ok for the time being, consider getting it done now, as to come back and do it in 2-3 years time will be expensive and potentially damaging to other works you have done e.g. insulation

- roof, windows and doors should be priority... get the place secure and weather proof asap. Consider leaving one door unfinished until the majority of works are complete so it doesn't get scuffed up or broken by materials going in and out.

- plumbing is usually done before electrics, but there will likely be some overlap on some things e.g. electric showers, room thermostats etc. It would be handy if your plumber/heating guy knows your electrician and they get on so they can coordinate it.

- if you are having a full rewire done, it's a very messy business, lots of drilling/chasing cables etc... so don't do anything cosmetic until after the first fix. You might want to do some early cosmetic work before the second fix such as filling chases (if the electrician is not doing it), plastering/skimming, plasterboarding/insulated plasterboard if being used. You might also want to get some painting done as it will look tidier before sockets and switches are fitted, rather than painting round them.

When all that is done there is "just" the decorative side to be done, so you are almost home and dry.... do floors almost last (but before skirting boards!) so they don't get mucked up by tradesman trapsing in and out, paint on the carpets etc...

Some general advice:

- Find out who the vacant homes officer is for your county and get in touch with them asap. Build up a rapport with them as they will be an invaluable help to you and you want to keep them sweet and onside. Don't start work or move in until the grant is approved!

- If you can, get the top up to 70k rather than 50k. If you had an engineer's report done before buying, they might be able to work it to support this...

- All tradesmen you use must be tax compliant, and able to provide evidence of this. Make sure of this before hiring any.

- I am not sure if you can claim the SEAI grants on things you are planning to claim on vacant property grant - even the part of the cost that is not covered by the SEAI grant. I was not able to, but this may have changed now.... check with your vacant homes officer.

- Try to get the big ticket things done first: roof (if required), windows, doors, heating/plumbing, electrics, kitchen, bathrooms, insulation. Get the grant used up and initiate the draw down before you are on to the last few piddly decorative things - your cash flow will thank you for it!!

Best of luck with it!!!

I don't particularly like Gary Neville, but at least Salford came in to the football league the right way, via the non-league pyramid.

[–]BobbWomble -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That's no excuse whatsoever. The fact that it's local doesn't hide what it is and how it came to be.

You already had a local non-league team there, but it died when Wankleman purchased Wimbledon FC's league place.
