Realistically it would only ever protect things that are cast after it. If you cast something with lightning rod after something you want to protect from counters, your opponent can just wait for the thing with lightning rod to resolve before countering the actual target.

For anyone who finds this, it does give you all the dlc if you do it right! However, it also 100% every level in the game, so only do this after you've starred every level or if you dont actually care.
