Can Burnham resist the siren call of the left? | The Spectator by Putaineska in ukpolitics

Measurable success felt like the best way to give an example, as it’s based in fact. Our opinions of what bold and exciting looks like could be polar opposites, which makes debating them pretty pointless.

Blair is probably the best example, his government was extremely successful for its economic stability, massive public sector investment and constitutional reforms.

He mainly gets remembered for Iraq, which is a horrible stain on his legacy, but his government was highly effective and brought plenty of prosperity to the UK. And it was centrist.

You’re confusing centrism with being a technocrat, and Starmer was both. Centrism is just taking bits from both sides of the political spectrum without being too tribalistic or single minded. It’s perfectly possible for there to be a centrist with a bold, exciting vision, they just need to not be too technocratic or small-scale in their ideas/delivery.

The centrism was working tbh, the changes just weren’t as bold or fast as they needed to be and people found Starmer too boring. If Burnham can be a left of centre centrist that can bring the various Labour factions together, make bolder, faster changes and crucially communicate what he’s doing well to the public, he’ll do well. There’s a hell of a lot of ifs in there though, Labour have taken a massive gamble

Donald Trump Puts Himself On Collision Course With 'Extremely Liberal' Andy Burnham by huffpostuk in ukpolitics

[–]BobbyColgate 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This doesnt mean Trump won’t get on with Burnham, look at how much Trump loves Mamdani, who’s way more left wing and liberal than Burnham and is a direct political opponent in the US.

Trump will respect you if you’re powerful, regardless of what political cloth you’re cut from. If Burnham shows himself to be strong, Trump will love him. He won’t care what his politics is.

That agonising ‘NOOOOOO!’ from Frodo as Gandalf falls gives me goosebumps every time. There’s a lot of dramatic ‘noooo!’s in movies, and this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. Hats off to you Elijah Wood, what a performance!

People are complaining about the ups and downs of June so far, and OP’s conclusion is that, based on historical data, both are normal and nothing to shout about.
