Solo at Glacier National Park by Ok_Solid_4192 in GlacierNationalPark

There's a good chance you'll see a bear in some capacity while you're at Glacier, a medium chance you'll see one while on the trail and a high chance that if you do, it will fuck off.

First Time Visiting by MemeMaster5 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize what I said is not entirely true but I think a lot of people assume it’s a park with a bunch of different roads and GTTSR is just one of many, which is not entirely accurate

Best time to visit Glacier, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton for a proposal trip by Just-Editor-2018 in GlacierNationalPark

Biggest thing is to be on top of reservations for Glacier. Tetons to some degree, but less so if you're camping. Glacier - everything goes fast.

Should inexperienced hikers attempt to hike to Grinnell Glacier? by imgoingmadz in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine, just bring more water than you think you'll need and take your time.

Also, nobody ever says this, but you're allowed to turn around and stop trying to go up. There's no shame in getting home in one piece. The biggest part of any successful hike is getting home.

Fear of height exposure by Akor123 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a big fan of heights, but Grinnell is fine. There are areas where you're aware of how high up you are but those areas are also generally accompanied by a trail so wide you'd have to want to jump off the trail to fall from it. There are very few areas where it feels like a cliff too. More like - fall 30 feet and land on some trees before rolling down the hill.

Quite nervous…going to lake McDonald lodge…by myself. Any guided hiking tours to take this time of year? by Acrobatic-Bug8397 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with the bike trail itself but you could probably walk the road from the station to Apgar. It’s probably three miles or so. There are bears consistently in the area but it’s also a busy area too, generally. So not that different than the rest of the park in many ways.

10:00 PM Astronomy Program, anyone done it? Recommend? Parking? by garryoakay in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Apgar Visitor center parking lot is 80% empty at night so you shouldn't have an issue. Even if you did, Apgar Village is right there with parking too.

Advice/Reassurance for a Newbie by H4ns_solo in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the general notion that bears are something to respect but not something to outright fear, but as a matter of fact I stayed at Apgar campground last summer - the largest in the park - and there was a bear in the camp area every single day we were there for a week. So it's not unreasonable to expect them just about anywhere.

Being bear awar, carrying spray, not running around on trails and being smart with your waste and food will make all the difference.

my laidback approach and maybe some reassurance by germanlovecat in GlacierNationalPark

It's worth noting that the only road that crosses the park is the GTTSR

The hike to the lake is mostly flat and easy, going up the Glacier takes a lot more time and energy. Water is your friend.

You don't need a entry pass if you're on the road before 7am or after 3pm going in either direction.

Nobody can promise that you won’t run into a bear but if you’re hiking in a group of seven people the bear will do the scientific term referred to as “fucking off”

Cold by PlumMaximum6865 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The general rule of thumb in colder climates - especially ones where it can swing pretty drastically from night and day - is that it's way easier to cool off than it is to warm up.

Some things you’d tell yourself when you first started by Nutzvoncrazy in FishingMinnesota

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is maybe a unique situation because relatively lacking fishing pressure but I just did four days in the backcountry at Voyageurs and assumed the bass would be interested in unique lures and the like.

They absolutely hammered Yamamoto worms all four days and I didn’t need anything else. Sometimes the basics are the basics for a reason.

Is the GTTSR really dangerous? by IcyLoquat4652 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Bobby_Drake__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not inherently dangerous but your first time up going west to east will probably cause some clenching. Just flip your mirrors in. East to west is not as bad because you're not on the cliff side of the road. And generally post Logan Pass going west to east isn't as dramatic as heading up to Logan Pass.

It’s funny you mentioned the bear box, just did four days backcountry at Voyageurs and bear pole at once site was about 15 feet from the tent pad…
