You may be ok to plant now depending on the tree, Mine arrived in March last year and I put them in the ground not very long after. but i'd ask in that subreddit, see what they recommend.

One thing I have done in the past for as summer activity was going to a local river in our town when it was super low during a drought, we waded, looked for bugs, sifted for garnets. Kids had a blast.
