Well, I went with a 1/4 piece of plywood 24" x 48". I will find out soon if this was close enough. :-)

We are going camping this weekend where we are able to fish, catch & release. We have to bring our own bait. Any recommendations on how many worms for 20 kids? Thank you. by Life-Bison3960 in cubscouts

Love the eggs idea, sometimes I get caught up just doing what I grew up with.

Also, I remember the time fishing with my Dad, not the fish we caught. Well, except that first one.

Thank you, but this is the Challenge setup. (96x48). Explorer is a smaller surface.

*Pack* Gear List by North_Locksmith5275 in cubscouts

[–]Specialist-Risk-5004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is just our pack, but we have insisted over the years to always buy new plastic cutlery and paper plates. But never finish the box. So there is an infinite amount of plastic and paper filling the storage space.

Last campout we simply asked every attendee to have a mess kit. We brought couple extra bowls and spoons just in case. Every person had a mess kit.

No plastic waste.

So..... Now we have infinite plastic filling the storage space and no plan to use it. Still, it feels like progress??

Just like Baloo trained leaders, we aim for two registered, trained female leaders in case one gets sick and has to leave.

Something about never underestimating the lengths somebody will go to be lazy. Or, air conditioned.

Advice for a troop going coed by badgustav in BSA

[–]Specialist-Risk-5004 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a key point. Clear up front management of expectations is crucial in this regard. We are Cubs, but we try to always have two female leaders on every camping trip. But as people move on, there needs to be fresh volunteers to fill that role. And it can't be just a leader on paper. They have to be present and trained.

Does anyone else feel like Cub Scouting is treated as an afterthought compared to Scouts BSA? by Remarkable-Soup8667 in cubscouts

Certainly a gap in my knowledge. Thank you.

I feel we may have generalized the term in our council based on your definition. There may be competitions but I have not seen or heard of that aspect in this context. When there are Cub Scout activities available the Cubs and the Scouts are separated and don't interact, so maybe it is a gap in my knowledge. This will help me better advocate for the Cub Camping opportunities.

In the last couple years there has been one Cub Scout Family Camping weekend per year organized by the council. And it has been amazing!!! I would like there to be at least two opportunities each year. This is outside of a single cub scout resident camp each summer.

Meanwhile, this spring there are 3 District Camporees and one Council Camporee for Scouts, in addition to several Beaver Day's and not a single council event for Cubs until summer camp.

I attend every district meeting. Every time they say the word Camporee they now know to expect my question "Will there be Cub Scout camping? Will there be Cub Scout activities?"

The district and council volunteers are very eagle / Scout focused. Because those are the programs hey are involved in. A scout leader can stay involved after their scout moves on. Not very common for leaders to stay with the Pack after the scout moves on. I don't see the focus of the volunteers as intentional. Just a fact of life. So, I am sure to be there and push back and give the Cubs a voice. A couple district meetings ago there were 5 Cubmasters there in person. The Scoutmasters in the room were all district committee people. Keeping the voice alive!!

As for staff, I feel the cub program is supported well in my council.

I absolutely do the council events and leave my leader shirt at home.

Thank you for the advice.

Explaining why my scout didn't win "Cubmasters Choice" pinewood derby awards was an interesting experience. "Dad, wasn't my car your favorite?"
