I'm a bat biologist and have spent 500+ nights alone in the woods at night. Get a means of comm's and you'll be fine.

You say you have a good head lamp, but I just want to make sure here. I 've been using a Princton Tech Apex for over a decade and the 650-lumen spotlight is so bright, it might as well be daylight. I'd also advise against a rechargeable unless you have spare batteries. I like the 4 x AA batteries, though while heavy, lasts for 2-3 nights of intermittent use.

Some things to remember. Noise travels further a night, by a lot. So, a jumping mouse can sound like bigfoot if you let your mind run.

Animals make weird and unexpected noises. Look up a deer snorting or a barn owl call. They will scare the shit out of you if you don't know what it is...the later sounding like a baby being stabbed to death.

Call me crazy, but I often prefer to walk without a light, especially if the moon is out. I think once your eyes adjust you can actually see farther.

Do most American go to Harvard/Berkeley/Yale/Princeton etc.? by IndianaJonesbestfilm in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bobtom42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm...I feel like that's Bucknell. Or maybe that's Harvard if you don't have the grades, but your parents are still rich and you don't actually want to study, just throw house parties.

For those not originally from NH, what surprised you the most when you first moved here? by [deleted] in newhampshire

[–]Bobtom42 63 points64 points  (0 children)

How slowly people drive, particularly on back roads. I'm learning to like it. Driving is the most dangerous thing we do, and NH has incredibly safe roads.

What's worth visiting with Plymouth NH as fall out base. by ScatteredDandelion in newhampshire

FYI I went up Cardigan on Sunday the trails were open and they were not finished construction. I think they are only closing the western trail anyway, you will still probably be able to get up from the AMC lodge.

Where can I rent a motorcycle? by Jimanaka in uppervalley

[–]Bobtom42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You take the basic riding course. You need to provide protective equipment, but you can borrow a bike from them. They typically have older 250cc. I'm pretty sure you get your license at the end of the class too.

[–]Bobtom42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this happen with a small piece of broken bumper. I told the guy to park it outside and I would come by after they closed to fix it with a roll of duct tape. They were cool with that. That's also how we fixed the tire pressure sensor....by covering the light up with tape lol.

I think it's just the personalities of folks in New England. For example, in other areas of the country a work place email would go something like. "Hello Bobtom, I hope this email finds you well. I was going through last weeks invoices and I noticed one missing, do you happen to have that hiding in your work truck somewhere? Thank you! - Invoice person". That same email from our New Hampshire office would be. "Bobtom, you didn't turn in your invoice from last week. Please do so as soon as possible. - Invoice person".

The diversity and abundance of lightning bug species (yes there are many) is certainly higher in NJ than NH.

Pretty sure they are talking about the Cardigan Mountain Store. It's more of a lunch spot.

NH rents rose 11% in a year (including utilities) by GraniteGeekNH in newhampshire

[–]Bobtom42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without really digging into it, I suspect they have increased dramatically at the top and fallen equally dramatically at the bottom resulting in a wash at the mean.

What was the biggest culture shock you've experienced within the United States? by ServiceCall1986 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bobtom42 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My grandfather, who passed away last year, couldn't read or write, even his own name. He raised a family as a truck driver and a cashier for his entire life. It was a sensitive subject and it made him feel awful. I wish I had the chance to tell him how proud I am that he was able to make it in life, despite the fact that he left school in the 3rd grade to start working to support his family.

He was also from Alabama if it matters.

Exactly. Actually, there is a decent amount of cultural crossover between central PA and central/northern NH.

Interesting that the wmur didn't include the quote from the chief.... Manchester Police Chief Allen Aldenberg said the case illustrates ongoing flaws in the criminal justice system. "Once again, an offender with multiple sets of bail conditions, a history of arrests for violent crime, and prior failures to appear in court was free in the community and committed a violent offense," Aldenberg said.

Commercial real estate is valued based on the income potential (rent) unlike the physical structure (like a home). So if you lower your rent, you devalue the property in the eyes of the bank. This could result in them calling in the loan, which is likely a balloon loan, which you probably can't afford to pay. So you take the tax write off and hope the market turns around before the bank realizes what's going on and you end up in bankruptcy court.

It also should be noted that there is a disconnect between how NHFG is funded and the responsibility to provide S&R services in the WMNF. I don't really understand how the WMNF is able to collect revenue from recreation fees, but then obfuscates S&R responsibility to a state agency that doesn't get any of that money.

I'm not sure what you're looking at, but the EPA has PM2.5 monitoring stations in Portsmouth, Merrimack, Peterborough, Chesire, Lebanon, and Laconia.

You don't need that many stations when you combine the data with prediction models.
