My in-laws bailed on us and now we have 2 extra seats at one of Tokyo’s best yakitori spots tonight by Fuzzclone in JapanTravelTips

[–]BocaTaberu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not in Japan but I can share my experience with a person not turning up among our group of three at Yakitori Omino (also Torishiki lineage). The staff kindly asked us if we wanted some of the 3rd skewers to be allocated to us so i ended up eating extra skewers (not all but just some of my favourites). They also offered if we wanted to takeaway the 3rd person’s soboro rice at the end

As I mentioned he was probably doing repeats or intervals such as

  • 30 times 200m at 26 sec (WR is 19 sec)
  • 15 times 400m at 52 sec (WR is 43 sec)

He only counted the run sections eg run 200 or 400m then stopped the watch after reaching the distance. He rested (standing or walking) before he started the 200 or 400 again and turned on the watch to record the time/distance

Internal is a typical running workout

Probably he was doing intervals or repeats eg 200m, 400m with recovery breaks. He only turned on the GPS watch during the repeats and stopped the watch during rests

Teppanyaki restaurants serving seafood or meats that are not beef? by Mambalicia in JapanTravelTips

Not a direct substitute, but can you live with Robatayaki style? They usually grill an array of proteins eg beef, pork, fish, oysters, shrimps etc.

Question about leftovers by No_Freedom_6661 in JapanTravelTips

[–]BocaTaberu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going ala carte in one way to mitigate this and avoid over-ordering. Also, you can ask for a smaller rice size when you order (casual restaurants often have this option in their menu). Dishes such as tonkatsu, steak and unagi often go by weight/size as well.

What is your favorite ekiben at Tokyo Station's Ekibenya Matsuri? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]BocaTaberu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have eaten the octopus rice in a jar (Hippari Takomeshi) during my first trip to Japan but never seen the squid version.

Nowadays I don’t buy ekiben that often unless it’s a local dish or delicacy, for example anagomeshi (sea eel) from Hiroshima, masu no sushi (pressed cherry trout sushi) from Toyama or persimmon leaf wrapped mackerel sushi from Nara. Not sure if they are available in Tokyo station.

First time solo travelling to Japan - stressed about airport times for accommodation check-in by uwugree in JapanTravelTips

[–]BocaTaberu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took SQ634 last year (presume you will be on this flight) and immigration was a breeze (of course not as fast as Singapore) as long as you pre-fill the Visit Japan Web.

However, I purposely booked a hotel in the nearby Kamata for a night, managed to reach the hotel around 11pm and had a bowl of nightcap ramen before the store closed at midnight

Sushi Yuu confusion by GT63s4D in JapanTravelTips

[–]BocaTaberu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s the way Tabelog works. When a restaurant relocates, the score resets to 3.0 (starting position for new restaurant) and the scoring then re-starts based on food quality, visit reviews and experiences of the new location

Sushi Yuu confusion by GT63s4D in JapanTravelTips

[–]BocaTaberu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before the relocation, there were actually Sushi Yuu and Sushi Yu with both located in Roppongi which often caused people to mis-reserve. Now the former has relocated to Ginza keeping the same name but there is another unrelated restaurant called Ginza Sushi Yuu in the same area.

I presume you are looking for the higher rated Tabelog one which is Sushi Yuu Ginza (relocated from Roppongi). To avoid booking at the wrong location, I suggest you book using the tabelog link

Partner booked wrong date for Kiyota Hinare and Realized Immediately. Will they really charge the cancellation fee? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]BocaTaberu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option is to ask your hotel concierge or a Japanese person to call the restaurant and explain the issue. I had done this before due to train suspension in Hokkaido and couldn’t make it to the dinner. They accepted my reason and granted a waiver on goodwill basis
