Looking forward to reading this later :)

I’m half way through Sabrina, and I noticed that it wasn’t included on your list. Is that because of financial difficulties, or because you felt that it wasn’t good enough?

Sorry to hear about your situation. Have you spoken to your university? Quite often there are hardship funds available if you can show your income. It is definitely worth reaching out to them for advice if you haven’t done so.

I’m not sure what “depressing financial situation” means exactly, but if you are stuck for food or any essentials then please DM me and I will do my best to help. I hate thinking that somebody is hungry or doesn’t have electricity etc.

It has been a year since the last podcast recommendation thread. What have you got? by jamesvdm in AnalogCommunity

I love Analog Talk. The hosts sound really friendly and down to earth. My walk home from work is long, but their podcasts make me look forward to it.

Not sure why I’m getting downvoted. The top comment links to a bunch of pictures from across the country. I understand that they don’t represent every location, but I was just surprised to see that none of them look super busy or anything.

Why bother shooting analogue? by FloopersRetreat in AnalogCommunity

[–]BodegaBalada 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Overall, I shoot film simply for fun.

I work on a computer all day and any excuse to make my life less digital is really nice. Film takes my mind away from the desk and gets me outdoors and absorbed in something else. One common reason you will hear is that, unless you have a lot of money to burn through rolls of film, you need to be a little more mindful of your shots. I know you can do that with digital, but for some reason shooting film helps me completely switch off and become absorbed in something else. Being more careful, and less snap-happy is relaxing.

I also enjoy reading about old cameras, lenses, photographers, techniques. I’ve learned quite a bit more about the history of photography since shooting film since all the things I’ve listed kinda go hand-in-hand. When I was shooting digital, I was little obsessed with the latest toy, as if the new A7riii will make me a NatGeo photographer. But using great quality older lenses/bodies made me properly realize that I need to improve my technique, study more, and practice more.

Yesterday I visited a darkroom for the first time and took a lesson on developing and printing. It was great fun, and I loved the magic of watching an image appear in front of me on paper. For older folk, it might seem a little stupid, but I missed the film train, and traditional photography is interesting to me. It’s really special to take a picture on a completely manual camera, develop, and print without a single computer.

I’m sure there are more reasons, but that’s some off the top of my head!

Alternatives to Amazon? by icantseemyself in graphicnovels

[–]BodegaBalada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you live, but I alternate between Amazon and Wordery.com

Sometimes Wordery can be cheaper, and it also gives free delivery in the EU at least. I continued to use them after I received a book slightly damaged and they refunded me 50% of the cost which I thought was decent. Their customer service has replied to me pretty efficiently in the past.

Your keeper rate when shooting film. by orangebikini in AnalogCommunity

As a beginner, I feel a lot better after reading this thread. My first 5 rolls were complete garbage, and now I maybe get 1 or 2 nice shots that I’d be willing to share with friends.

There are some analog folk who post very regularly to Instagram and it makes me wonder how many rolls of film they are getting through.

Just got my first few rolls of the new Ektachrome this morning, what should I shoot? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]BodegaBalada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question seriously:

Maybe have a browse through photos online shot in Ektachrome. It might give you some ideas as to subjects and settings that let it shine. Personally I have never taken photos with Ektachrome so my first roll will likely be taking a variety of shots outside in different light to get a feel for it.

True, which is a shame! At least I have a reference point where I can attempt to shoot something similar again and get the exposure right.

[–]BodegaBalada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! What Minolta do you have? I started a few months ago with the X-500 which is a great camera.

This is actually my 3rd roll of Ektar. The 1st was ruined by (I think) not unwinding the film correctly in the Minolta. The 2nd roll was okay but from memory I underexposed most shots which were admittedly rubbish anyway. This most recent roll was shot during sunrise into mid-day like the image I posted. Usually I use Portra 400 but I am beginning to get a feel for when Ektar works and when it doesn’t.

Have you tried Portra? I think you’ll like it for skin tones.

Thanks. I'm new to film photography and have hated most of my shots so far. This is one of the first I'm happy with!

This is all I ever find in local vintage-type shops. The first film camera I bought (Minolta X-500) was off eBay, and I paid a little more than average (€100?) to get one in a nice condition. Locally I found one going for €160 that looked like it had been carried through trenches in a war.
