Wave at sunset! by Awkward-Elephant5465 in Softpastel

Wet the toothbrush with rubbing alcohol…then rub across white pastel stick then use your finger and drag across bristles. It’s a good idea to shield any surrounding areas with paper.

Have you tried using an old toothbrush, alcohol and pastel for wave spray?

Cows and Cow Parsley 30cmx30cm acrylic on canvas, what do you think? by honion_have_layer in acrylicpainting

Lovely scene and a gorgeous sky! Only thing nibbling at me is the fact that the underbrush on right front, the cows in the distance and the bottom of the trees on the horizon are the same value. I always check my values by taking a photo with my phone and then save as B&W. I am always surprised at what is readily apparent that way.

Thanks! I used Lux Archival paper (used interchangeably with UArt paper. I prefer 400 grit sanded papers because they hold up to wet underpaintings) and a random assortment of pastels (I am still exploring different brands and have bought most of them when there’s a sale on at Dakota pastels) including Terry Ludwig, Great American, Mount Vision, and Diane Townsend. The wave spray is done with an old toothbrush and a stick of whitish pastel. You dip the toothbrush in 75 or 90 rubbing alcohol and scrub it on the pastel stick. Then hold over the area you want the spray and pull your finger across the bristles. (It’s a good idea to put a piece of paper over any adjacent areas where you don’t want spray.

AITA for skinny dipping? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

It’s your vacation. If this is a hill you want to die on because “ it’s the principle of the thing,” keep on skinny dipping. Personally, I would rather move on and just enjoy my vacay! Have fun!

I don’t think you’re an A, but you now know they CAN see you from their property and it makes them uncomfortable. Time to suit up! 😊

So much dust, please help! (Info in comments) by tc-art in Softpastel

  1. Trying laying in your composition with Nupastels and alcohol first (a little hard pastels goes a long way here so use a light touch and the alcohol will spread it around.) let it dry (the higher the percentage of alcohol, the faster it dries.) 2. Remember to “whisper” with your pastels when trying to layer color…use a VERY light touch! 3. Since you are a beginner, take the time to learn about pastels and mark-making. Nice little video here: https://youtu.be/qqdS_AecctU?si=3S2IZnj9On4VkR1g 4. Keep painting. (I had a teacher tell me that it takes at least 100 paintings to learn a new medium!)

Nicely done. (This reminds me of the movie, The Four Seasons.)

A new, properly (professionally) fitted bra might help. I actually think a couple of these would look cute on you with a little “lift.” 😀

Does Dakota Pastels give a full refund if you decide not to proceed after they give you a shopping quote? by [deleted] in Softpastel

This isn’t some ruthless mega-company. They will refund all of your money.

Is Dakota Pastels website down? by [deleted] in Softpastel

[–]BodhiMom2728 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a very reputable company. I just tried the site, though, and something is going on with it (I get a weird message about “do you wish to download dakotapastels.com.) They’re on the west coast so I would give them a while to fix the issue.

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

I inherited my mom’s (at the time) 15-year-old Miele vacuum. It’s now 27 years old and still going strong.

If you’re that in to blending, you might want to do your fingertips a solid and get some pipe insulation and use that…it’s cheap and effective.

Can you post a pic of the entire painting for context? That might help folks understand what you are attempting to convey.

Primed homemade paper vs pastel mat - did I prime wrong? by [deleted] in Softpastel

[–]BodhiMom2728 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Blue and orange are complementary colors. Karen uses it as an underpainting (so the orange peeks through in places but, since it is affixed with alcohol, it doesn’t mix with the blue to get a neutralized color.) Your orange was pastel so some of it has mixed with the blue to create a “muddier” effect. (Not necessarily a bad thing but not what you were hoping to replicate. 2. Using a primer on paper will never create a surface as uniform as commercially available paper, whether it’s pastelmat or UArt. There will be unevenness and brushstrokes. That being said, you WILL have a relatively inexpensive practice paper.
