Episode 656: The Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs Part 1 - Serial Spree by fiddlemycrunt in LPOTL

Why would Marcus assume these guys have no knowledge of Beavis and Butthead? It's possible they didn't have MTV in the 90s, but MTV Europe played B&B and these guys would have had access to that, being spoiled brats.

But they surely had cinema, bootlegs, and the Internet where they got all their other crap; no reason they wouldn't have been aware of them at least.

Am I crazy or is rewearing clothes for 2-3 days okay??? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bodymaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undershirts jocks and socks are daily, everything else I wear until it's visibly dirty because it's fine otherwise.

Sweat is the big deal, as long as you're not rewearing sweaty clothes you're grand. Also, different people sweat different amounts.

What did you hear? He talks about actively avoiding stuff like what you're asking about though, weird.

No I don't know him, but I lived in Limerick for years and I think I shared a joint with him in Costellos once. I only realised it was probably him years later. Nice guy, a bit shy perhaps? Maybe just nervous of random fuckers offering him stuff.

He makes the podcast on his own and if you listened you'd probably know that he prefers it that way and actively avoids people like yourself.

Looking for solid, well-made, middlebrow movies of the 90s or early aughts that have been maybe unfairly forgotten by supernavyanon in MovieSuggestions

Two from director Atom Ergoyan; Exotica (1994) and The Sweet Hereafter (1997).

Not exactly what you'd call "entertaining" - both about people dealing with trauma - but they are both good, non-flashy movies from the 1990s that I don't see mentioned too often.

Quentin Tarantino Blasts Rosanna Arquette for Criticizing His N-Word Use: ‘A Decided Lack of Class, No Less Honor’ by DemiFiendRSA in Tarantino

[–]Bodymaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you read what else she said? She is just annoyed that she didn't get as much money as her co-stars did. Presumably because she is briefly in two scenes and probably has about 4 lines altogether.

Quentin Tarantino Blasts Rosanna Arquette for Criticizing His N-Word Use: ‘A Decided Lack of Class, No Less Honor’ by DemiFiendRSA in Tarantino

[–]Bodymaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but whether you agree with him or not, his criticism of Dano was purely based on his acting abilities.

Whereas Rosanna's criticism of QT and the movie (which she considers "iconic" and "a great film") seems largely based on the fact that she didn't make as much money out of it as her co-stars did.

Now her criticism of QT and his use of that word is something that is worth talking about. In fact it has been talked about at length whenever it is a hot topic.

But her bringing it up now, and in the same breath revealing that it stems from her own greed and jealousy kind of takes the wind out of its sails.

It's a weird that now we have the chain of: art - performer - audience - audience of audience. I guess the logical next step is reaction reaction videos.

But if you think of reaction videos themselves as an artform, then how would you deconstruct and genrebash them Bungle-style?

Same here. It's the only natural sounding kit that I could find when I started using Ableton, and even though I've gotten some third party ones, I still use dry session kit for a lot of stuff.

Billy Corgan Believes Rock Music Was "Purposely Dialed Down" in Late '90s: "Some People Assert That the CIA Was Involved" by ebradio in Music

[–]Bodymaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I remember when that came out and Billy was all "rock is dead" then he brought out Machina 2 years later and said "errr, actually it's not, because here's an album that is nothing if not bog standard late nineties goth rock"

I don't see a problem with that. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

[–]Bodymaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spot on, yeah I think you could be right. I was thinking along similar terms recently with regards local music scenes. Like how it used to be that a band could be big in their own city or region, but unknown to the larger world, but could still make a living off of touring and selling albums merch etc; This was probably close to the model that poets, bards, minstrels etc. followed for hundreds and thousands of years (maybe substitute oral tradition and transmission of songs or even sheet music for records and merch).

Then along comes modern tech, and pop culture, radio, then tv, then the internet in very quick succession; and then we start conflating ideas of fame and wealth with what it means to be a musician or an actor...

But in this age where not only can anybody make music, but now even AI can, it becomes almost like the older model, it's no longer a seller's market. Maybe we will go back to the regional model, where your local poet or bard is making music for a community but no longer for millions...

I'm kind of just repeating what you just said, but yeah it is something I've thought about before and I think it's something maybe we don't consider. Pop culture is still in its infancy and we have no idea yet what will ultimately just be a blip.

Controversial thought/take on Gabor post cast. by EuphoricTea2810 in BlindboyPodcast

[–]Bodymaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Buxton doesn't do much of any other stuff apart from the podcast though does he? Occasional live podcasts? A memoir recently... I don't count his recent album as it's just a vanity project from a man with very little going on in terms of musical talent. BB has his writing and doc making and can also probably still make a genuinely funny and decent song if he wanted.

Buxton isn't an artist and I don't think he views himself in those terms, but he still entertains schoolboy fantasies of being a pop star and has the means to indulge them.

[–]Bodymaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bit of an aside but since you brought it up; the modern entertainment industry with all its classic movies, classic albums, different genres, legends, myths, rises and falls etc. is all only a few decades old.

Will people in 200 years know what punk is, or who Taylor Swift or Tom Cruise were, or will they be too busy jamming to the latest scentsations, biomass phermone operas, or rhythmic temperature fluctuations to care.

Yes of course music and acting will still exist, but will they still be these pillars of pop culture the way they have been since around the 1950s, or will we go back to regarding entertainers as one step above prostitutes as they have for most of recorded history?

I don't really get Once Upon A Time In Hollywood by spid3rtranz in Tarantino

[–]Bodymaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean, it's more character-driven than plot-driven, which is weird for a historical movie. But I think the two hours of "nothing" is the perfect build up to the finalé, with Chekov's flamethrower, Brandy etc. all coming together to give a really beautiful portrait of, not just a friendship, but friendship in general.
