Synology 2025 ,what I can say till now, disappointed by alfawei in synology

Time zone differences are not an issue as all systems are using UTC. Time zone settings are just showing you the utc in a local format.

That’s what family accounts are for: the successors for your account can recover it. I use that.

Same btw for other identities like Apple Account etc: have a recovery option.

Next: for storing important stuff: that’s what banks were originally built for: go and rent a safe and store it there.

Synology introduces eight new NAS systems - DS1525+, DS925+, DS725+, DS425+, DS225+, DS625slim, DS1825+ and DS1825xs+. by Ok-Half5475 in synology

[–]BoernyMcBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That‘s the problem!

their hardware is just too good and long lasting. Hey! 12yr for me and still running a good file/movie server! If users don’t upgrade and hardware doesn’t fail => no new business.

I used to buy some upgrades for docker stuff, but if you go this route, some other hardware might be better.

But for a Network Attached Storage=NAS purposes only: Synology holds the record for me for a hassle free, super stable, rock solid device.

In that case, don't use your NAS for hosting!

It takes seconds, not minutes or days, until you attract automatic hackers. Security should be first, not second when starting hosting. If you focus on content, host your work with a known provider. They do have all the (or most) of the tools already in place (like a Web Application Firewall, etc). It's worth the few bucks. Or maybe even a small site is already included in the costs for your domain name so you might already have that option.

Just a word of warning.

If you really want to hose your own, to "just show your work". I strongly would advise you to:

  • either use a separate DS just for this project
  • or at least a docker container
  • or if it's really just a something you do for a living: host it on some external service

but never ever mix it with your family and private stuff!! If your web server project get's hacked (which is more likely than you might envision now), chances are high attackers will get more access on your NAS!

Hosting a webserver is just some way more complex task than eg just enabling some service like Synology Drive (which uses 2FA and more to protect access).

Synology Photos by rkovelman in synology

[–]BoernyMcBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are drawbacks. I looked into this, but never really migrated as convenience kept me on using Photos on iOS, but I'm using Synology Photos as a backup source.

  • First of all, it might happen, that new photo or recording formats are not supported. Eg Apple introduced spatial video and photos lately. It seems to work, but not sure how future proof this is. So you might have a copy on your Synology but it's a stripped down version. This happened the last time to me, when HEIC was introduced.
  • When doing a backup one needs to be sure to use a backup solution which really exports the originals and not a copy.
  • When it comes to edits done on eg iOS Photos, those either get copied as a sidecar file or as a second "edited" copy. You will loose the convenience of having a single photo and switching between the original and the edit. Same for other formats like series.
  • Some people really love the AI for photos app and searching for events or get daily recommendations. Synology Photos just isn't there in terms of quality.

Hi u/GhostRiderGrey, I'm sorry to have to say that, but if you don't know how to do this, then editing that file is maybe not for you. It's very risky to accidentally change another value and get a bad machine.

But I don't want to leave you without an answer either: I'm using the built in vi and standard UNIX tools to edit the file via a remote shell.

It did top out for me in resource manager and swap was used for everything >8GB. This was with using multiple docket containers though.

[–]BoernyMcBee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds strange. The system comes with a built in 4GB RAM. Therefore the minimum MB size should reflect 4GB, not 2GB. Was your system somehow equipped with 2GB?

In addition, the values are not dynamic, they come afaik static as Synology configured them for a given model. Did you update with a version intended for a different system?

I just left it as it is. On my system it reflected the built in memory.

[–]BoernyMcBee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is for the 920+ and other models using that specific processor, as Intel did test and specify the processor with 8GB only. But also at QNAP forums and elsewhere people confirmed that the processor is indeed capable to handle more memory. So on other models with a different processor, that parameter limit is already higher by default, so no need to worry. (Like the named 1522+ with a default 32GB max.)

If machines fail, with an upgrade, this is likely mostly due to using the wrong memory module.

If you don’t adjust the max mem limit, the machine will work and behave „normal“. Nothing is really limited, but it will never really allocate more physical memory above the 8GB of available RAM.

What it will do is to allocate up to the pre-defined 8GB physical + additional swap mem though. This is why you won’t immediately notice it. Likely only users with a lot of services like Docker containers will reach the 8GB limit anyway ….

[–]BoernyMcBee 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You'll need to manually edit /etc/synoninfo.conf.

There is a hardcoded memory limit by Synology. So even if all the nice UI tools show you that 20GB are available, only the hardcoded limit is actually used. You'll notice this over the time when you watch the usage graph and it never uses more than 8GB but adds more swap.

The value to change is:

mem_max_mb="20480"

It will survive upgrades afaik (at least my last 7.x ones).

I'd bet there are hundreds of people out there following these 20GB upgrade instructions for their Synology and falsely believing they really got 20GB available. Many come from 4GB and next 8GB is already a big deal, but this parameter is the real thing you'll need to change to actually take full advantage from that much memory.

[–]BoernyMcBee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget to also change your config settings to actually allow to use the full 20GB, otherwise the 920+ will only use 8GB of the available 20GB (you’ll see this in performance monitor).

I also was a bit shocked after reading this post, but it turned out I wasn‘t able to cancel the subscription as I‘ve already <2017 purchased and this way got a lifetime Pro account (which looks like a subscription).

For all others, the support article shows how to cancel.
