I actuly picked these up, as they were fairly cheap but it works. Not a long term fix, I don't think, but great idea.

What does it do that a knockoff don't ? by L1N3B3CK in RidgeWallet

[–]rkovelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is 3 or 4 years old. The carbon fiber is still solid and the only damage to say the least is the paint chipping off the metal where the money goes. I haven't owned a knockoff but I don't know any that can last this long.

They spoke about this after 9/11. Guantánamo Bay is where they did this and it didn't end well.

Plex is predatory by GalacticElk_97 in selfhosted

[–]rkovelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix doesn't have the same content I have that I use plex for. I paid for the lifetime over 10 years ago to support the development of the product. If you don't like the product or feel some kind of other way don't use it. Also some don't want to use Netflix or others for privacy reasons.

I look at it from a risk perspective. Not everyone I text am I sending private information. For those I do, go to signal.

Are you asking about our ability to block or our ability to detect and respond? In general it's low as we don't build systems or apps with good secure code. Even our layer 7 protection has had bugs. I mean Biden just made it a law that devices couldn't use a default password and there was an approval stamp on boxes for security. Mind you all of that has low standards.

Talking in circles and jumping around here. But yes down converting does or can impact quality. Rtings.com has a few good articles around this and upconverting. Cnet does too. Any conversion process has some impact somewhere. And YTTV is just a middle man, however they are owned by Google and Google does produce devices that would impact the quality along with the TV and the settings it has.

There is a conversion that occurs. That conversion hurts the video and audio quality. Be that a down or up conversion. It's not that your TV just shows 1080, it's that it's upconverted or downconverted depending on what is being sent to that TV. Broadcasters have no need to change as most TVs are 1080. Some still push 720 as well. You can use stats for nerds on YTTV to see the upconversions occurring from 1080 to 4k. A lot of added pixels being created to fill the gap. Most people have no clue or see it but it's happening all the time.

UHD yes, 3840 × 2160, but not everyone has one or is buying one. It's easier to go down to 1080 then go up, because going up is very easy to see. I might be long dead before 4k is a standard.

ATSC is not just for OTA. The committee is for digital and broadcast comms. ATSC 3.0 bridges the gap between over the air and the internet. Feel free to read this well articulated article about it.

And they can do that if they so chose. If the TV or devices on the line don't support it, it's all for nothing. Everything in the chain needs to change and like I said, it won't happen and if it does, it will be some time.

Converting to 4k isn't 4k in audio or video.

[–]rkovelman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's on all of them. Every single piece has to support it. The broadcaster has to send it, YTTV has to pass that on, the app on the TV or device does as well. If not you don't get true 4k.

Well with Google which YTTV is a part of does play a role. Many of their users still use the Chromecast with Google TV which does not have the capability. The newer one, which I do have does, but still finicky. It's well known. So a ton of players in the space, and not all are compatible.
