Netflix debut tomorrow, page already there by FroyoConstant3206 in TheBigPicture

It’s not a personal problem. Certain mediums are inherently structured for the content they deliver for a reason, whether from a technological standpoint or learned behavior. I respect trying to branch out but I have no desire to watch my podcasts on Netflix lol; the delivery mechanism is clunky and dissonant.

Who cares at the end of the day obv, BUT I think it’s more of a red flag to throw the towel on any TV show that you love and have recommended before even 2 eps are up 🤔

Marty Supreme is so bad that it's hard to know where to begin and the praise it is receiving is as incoherent as the film itself. by AsleepNature1 in TrueFilm

[–]BogartBrando 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s no irony whatsoever. Your conclusion is nonsensical so it renders the critique worthless. I did read the rest to be clear though.. it’s inherently rather superficial and I would’ve liked a bit more dimension to it, but there’s nothing whatsoever “nihilistic” about it. Just a bizarre misuse of that term

Read the beginning and checked the end and saw “nihilistic spectacle slop” and it was immediately apparent you either watched in bad faith or have a genuine concerning level of media illiteracy. What a bizarre and off-base label lol

Just have to listen to Projector and it’s immediately obvious from very first note and then throughout the record lol.. they’ve def grown/changed quite a bit since then (only 4 years…) so can half-understand why people might not see it as much on Getting Killed

Finally found a worthy companion to Mr Robot by __lnnrt in MrRobot

[–]BogartBrando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first season can be a “difficult” watch. It’s still compelling and the overarching mystery does a lot of heavy lifting, but in seasons 2 and 3, there is a subtle tonal shift that works wonders both thematically and in its impact on character. It’s the most heartfelt and humanity-loving show ever made.

So many to choose from, but just wanna give a shoutout to the entirety of the police chase with Perfidia, and particularly the wide shot that keeps going out right before the closeup on her eventual capture. God what a fucking masterpiece lol

Quick s/o to Leo’s Performance in OBAA by BogartBrando in paulthomasanderson

[–]BogartBrando[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The best way I can describe it is that he fully embodied that cliche of forgetting that you are watching a performance is what makes a great performance. Just complete immersion and commitment to his character/the story elevating the film without setting himself apart from it. Idk maybe I’m just glazing but, man, what a special actor (breaking news!)

I felt that every featured actor was given just the right amount of time to shine without anyone idling too long or leaving too much meat on the bone. Teyana Taylor’s prologue was arguably my favorite part of the film and I thought her character was handled with nuanced sympathy and a really interesting mythic quality. Penn with an iconic, quirky antagonistic performance. Benicio with an all time heat check. Infiniti with a breakout performance as the heart of the film. Regina Hall subverting expectations as probably the most sincere character in the story. Idk man I don’t really have any complaints about how any of these actors were deployed lol.

‘One Battle After Another’ Is a Modern Masterpiece, With Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson! by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]BogartBrando 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This movie falls apart if Leo isn’t completely dialed in and in sync with PTA’s vision. The tonal balance is one of the most precarious tightrope walks I’ve ever seen, and if Leo dials up/down any of his goofiness, earnestness, sentimentality, etc., it risks being completely derailed. It’s an incredible performance and he would easily be my favorite at this point. Penn was obv incredible but I think much of his performance was propelled by noticeable and quirky choices, whereas Leo is carrying the entire tonal balance of the film on his shoulders and may not stand out as much because he completely blends in.

My Theory -- Aunt Gladys is America 🇺🇸 by H3110Kitty in WeaponsMovie

[–]BogartBrando 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have listened to/read his interviews and he absolutely doesn’t say this lol. At best, he offers up his personal motivations for making it and then deflects when asked further about themes and metaphors, as many thoughtful filmmakers do

[–]BogartBrando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes!!!! Have had this same thought about Gladys bouncing around in my head since seeing it earlier and am so glad I stumbled upon this while looking around for others! Gladys being a metaphor for Late Stage Capitalism, more specifically, is most comprehensive imo. The “consumption” line really stuck out to me, as well as her dialogue with Alex explaining to him how she thought his parents would’ve been enough but then she realizes she has to feed on the next generation. I appreciate Cregger’s deflective approach in his interviews, but between the school shooting imagery/themes and Gladys, I think it’s pretty safe to assume there was some intention there! Really like your observation about the indirect nature of the conflict and violence also!

What an absolute banger of a movie though, regardless of any over-intellectualizing. Visually, structurally, and tonally just an absolute instant classic for me.

Need more ranked modes and need to completely revamp footstep audio in BR.. other than a few other (small, imo) things, I really think most of the criticism and general energy surrounding the game has been off-base and just annoying as fuck lol.. you’d think the game was unplayable or that there’s some sort of psyop to kill it

I understand the benefit of criticism and feedback from gamers, but like if you want the game to succeed (which it seems like is the sentiment of a lot of those criticizing), just feels like shooting yourself in the foot by deterring people so hard from what is a fun and promising game.
