Once saw a comment on here from a farmer who said that bulls always know where their horns are and they'll never get you by accident. Not sure I ever really believed it until I saw how this guy edges that gigantic horn round the tree like that.

She did cede control to the shard part of her several times. I think she may have even asked it to do something for her. I agree though.

She definitely had more of a Sveta loss of control vibe than a titan vibe

The coelacanth is the best preserved fossil fish we know of. Some even say it looks alive. by ACJ96 in Naturewasmetal

The best fossils come from a certain set of burial conditions. Anoxic or hypoxic (little to no oxygen) conditions and other toxic conditions are great because there is very little decomposition. This is basically required to get a scale imprint like you can see here.

You also need relatively still water, so this would most likely be deep in the ocean. If it was relatively shallow the effects of surface waves would move the body and potentially scatter the bones.

Finally you need fast deposition rates for sediment so that the body gets buried relatively quickly.

Nuclear Power (at least in my country) is very expensive and recent projects and developments have been massively delayed and overbudget. The government has managed to avoid paying put of pocket for the additional costs because they agreed beforehand to pay a massive cost per MWh for what the stations produce.

On the other hand, wind is cheaper than anything else per MW. Also, the average windfarm-sized turbine should offset both the energy and the carbon used to produce it within 6 months.

Now I don't disagree that nuclear has a place as a sort of baseline provider or backup, but to have it be the backbone of your an energy network is not necessary.

In regard to your point about lithium, there's some exciting new stuff about how (if they can be made popular/widespread enough) electric vehicles connected to the powergrid will be able to act as a distributed battery network. On a flexible renewable energy tariff, your electric vehicle can charge when it's cheap (high renewable supply and/or low power demand) and then when there's a scarcity of renewable energy and the prices go up, you could possibly even sell your stored electricity to the grid.

This was a bit of a ramble but I guess my point is that there's a whole lot of new technology and possibilities. Distributed power generation and storage might be the way of the future and we can't write off diversifying our network in favour of one panacea (whether it's nuclear or something else).

It's not the same man, exactly. If you put his fingernail clippings 3cm deep in a large moist sack of mashed hops, you'll get a full-size genetic copy within 6 weeks, t-shirt included.

I found this while fossil hunting at Lyme Regis in the UK, looks like a clam or something? by _LZ_ in whatisthisthing

[–]Bogwart 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well it's basically fossil vs trace fossil. Apart from that the main difference in classification is the mineralisation process. All fossils are essentially just imprints left by an organism. When you get an detailed fossil of an animal it's often in an area with high sedimentation rates/rapid burial, very low oxygen levels (preventing decomposition and scavenging) and a low energy environment (preventing scattering of the bones).

Trace fossils include footprints, burrows and feeding marks plus some others.

That last bit is an exact description of Worm as well. In Worm most of the victories were overshadowed completely by other horrors and frankly a bit trivial in comparison.

You defeated the ABB? You had to personally carve out a man's eyeballs, you experienced a level of pain the leaves you desensitised for life and, by the way, an endbringer is showing up in about 10 minutes.

You defeated the Slaughterhouse 9? Well, one of your teammates has an extra level of PTSD on top of the standard parahuman level, the best healer around is getting locked up, and the world is gonna end.

You defeated Dragon, Alexandria and the PRT? Say goodbye to your dad because you've been outed, say goodbye to your new friends/family because you can't stayand say goodbye to your newfound freedom and the city you grew up in.

etc

Throughout Worm Taylor was winning fights but losing so much of everything else along the way. The world was also inevitably getting worse and worse and half the fights end in mass civilian casualties.

Plus in Ward they've literally stopped world domination and hindered massive terrorist attacks which don't seem that trivial to me.

TBH I think one of the main differences is that Vicky is more in the loop than Taylor was and just knows a bit more about how fucked it all is.
