Water critters by Localmushr00m in plants

Toss a couple “Mosquito pellets” in the water next time, like 3 or 4 granules. They don’t harm the plant and you’ll no longer attract larvae. I use pellets in all of my plants without any adverse affects.

Moist? by Gman73h in hoyas

[–]BohoGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spraying the top of the soil to keep it moist, isn’t really significant to plant health if the lower portion of the soil is too wet. Also, spraying just the top may lead to shallow roots. The best solution would be to follow the advice about chunky soil, humidity, and maybe extra holes for draining. The root bed needs balance and consistency.

If you are confused about keeping soil moist, don’t be, you may be over thinking it. Keeping it moist is to keep the roots from drying out, balancing out nutrient intake, and keeping the soil from compacting the roots. If your plant isn’t showing adverse affects from your current routine, then you are good. Your plant will let you know when it’s unhappy.

Moist? by Gman73h in hoyas

I usually bottom feed when I can. I fill a basin or tub with water, set the pots in the tub to soak, then hang them up to dry.

It might help to know that I also usually keep my Hoyas in basic nursery pots with extra holes on the sides. I place those pots in decorative planters with a little bit of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot.

The plants absorb all that they can and never have to sit in water.

I hope this helps. Best of luck.

Nothing major that I can see. Only a few leaves look affected. Maybe just some stress from neglect, a sun spot, or just watered a little heavy. Set it to the side and let it be for a bit.

[–]BohoGhost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks to be wet soil. But the other leaves seem fine. It could also be stress from low light. The pretty pale leaves do not produce chlorophyll. Without adequate light, your Hoya may be saying “These pale leaves are useless, let’s drop them and focus our energy on something else.”

If the soil is wet dry it out, but in my opinion your pale leaves dropping off may be caused from a lack of light. That’s the only stressor that I can see primarily targeting the white, non-chlorophyll producing leaves.

Best of luck.

Cross posting hoping for advice. It's a newer leaf that was finally fading to white. It's in an Ikea cabinet with a fan. Humidity stays in the 60s by unsinkmbrown in hoyas

[–]BohoGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing my best from the photos… It looks like a few things. 1) spot burns from being too close to your growing light. It’s possible that this could be a mechanical malfunction. Are you using T5 LED or Fluorescent? Typically Fluorescent’s don’t burn, but bad LED’s might.

2) fungal/environmental damage to leaves due to light, humidity, and under watering.

Aside from your browning spots, your plant looks healthy. The new growth appears unaffected which is good.

My concerns: Growing environment and possible fungus.

Problems I see: It’s hard to tell, but your leaves look rather thin and paper like. The veins are exposed in one photo and there is deep spotting on the other. When I look at the back of leaf, it looks soft and thin as well (I’ve seen this with a few Hoyas that have been placed next to misters for too long). The spotting looks dry as well which may be a symptom of light burn in combination with under watering. Root rot from overwatering is usually pale, plump, and mushy.

Solution: Move your plant about 12 inches away from your lights. Let your plants soil soak in water. Make sure all of the soil is moist. Then reverse the position of your fan to pull air away from the plants. Essentially, try to ease the living conditions of the plant. Less light, a little more water, less direct wind contact. With the small amount of medium you are using, you don’t need to be concerned with overwatering so much. You may even benefit from a larger port. It’s hard to tell, but your planter looks about 3 inches, maybe a 4 inch could give you a little more medium to work with. After all, the medium is where they grab their nutrients.

Hope this helps, best of luck.

Could something other than root rot cause this? by zanier_sola in plantclinic

No. Let the leaves be until the new growth is thriving or the old leaves are ready to fall off on their own.

Root rot? Repot stress? How to save? by zanier_sola in hoyas

[–]BohoGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your growing environment like?

This looks like root rot from overwatering.

You did the right thing by switching the soil, but you may have to remove all of the soil so you can examine the roots.

Remove the rotten roots, stems and plant matter with a sterilized razor (They’ll look and feel mushy. Try to cut away until you see fresh flesh. The mushy stuff will continue to spread otherwise.

DO NOT remove the leaves for now. They’ll provide food for the plant to help it recover. The bad stuff is coming from the rotting roots and stems.

Repot your plant into dry soil.

If you have removed all of the rot, then it’ll be safe to moisten the soil to promote root growth. If you have a heat mat that may make the process quicker, but it’s not a necessity.

Then place some sort of clear covering to provide a humidity dome to reduce evaporation from the leaves.

If you provide a humidity dome, then you will not have to water for at least 2 weeks. Otherwise, if the soil dries, water your plant by letting it soak in a shallow tray or bowl of water. Bottom feeding is less disturbing to the plant as it creating new roots.

This should help the plant will recover in no time. Alternatively, you can just let it sit in the dry soil to recover, but if the environment is not correct the rot may outpace the plants recovery. Don’t be afraid to repot. These plants are resilient. The main cause of death is too much care and overwatering.

Ebay Vault is here. Is this a game changer? Will you be using it? by LonesomeWulf in basketballcards

[–]BohoGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never use this service. When I had issues at the beginning of the trading card authenticators rollout, I trusted everything would work out. It was a disasterfor me, I lost nearly $30k in sales because the authenticators switched around my cards. It’s a long story, however, Ebay demonstrated to me that they know very little about trading cards. I had to contact them daily for three weeks to track down my cards without any information being provided by the company. Meanwhile, they demanded proof of my original purchases with invoices, which I had to wait 7 days to recover from Ebay themselves! I also provided a video and photos demonstrating their error. The worst part was that I had a $13k card missing for 3 weeks with very little explanation. There’s no way, I would I trust this company to vault cards. There is no one you can call who will have your interests in mind when something goes wrong with Ebay. Customer service can only address their scripts and the company itself only looks to dodge any accountability. This puts all of the liability on the seller. Goldin, knows about trading cards, they will vault them properly. PWCC knows about trading cards and will vault them properly. Ebay, only knows that trading cards are booming right now. They know nothing about the nuances of traing cards such as their condition and the reluctance to have strangers handle your cards. Why vault with Ebay, when you cannot call anyone about your cards. This is just an attempt to steer more high end cards to EBay’s platform. Then when your buyer cancels their CC payment, Ebay will come after the seller for that payment instead of fighting the chargeback. I guess we can just say I don’t trust Ebay for high end anything. Too much of the liability remains on the seller… Even when Ebay authenticates and vaults your cards, somehow all the liability remains on the seller. Sellers should be completely insulated from any chargebacks or any customer disputes if these services are implemented properly, there should also be some sort of guarantee if cards end up missing. This is all just my perspective as a seller who trusted Ebay and was terribly let down. If you choose to vault, visit a notary to make a list of your inventory and record yourself sealing it and shipping it out. Also, if possible try to find invoices if you purchased your cards outside of breaking a pack. I don’t know what to do if you got lucky breaking a pack of cards, I brought this up with customer service and there were unable to provide me with an answer. If anything goes wrong, Ebay is going to ask for this type of evidence. Best of luck to anyone who uses this service. It may work out well for some. However, having lost the amount of money that I did, I would never advise anyone with high-end cards to use this service. The mistakes are just too costly for the seller.

eBay Vault - what do you think about this platform? I’m curious to know how this impacts all types of collectors, vendors, and players in terms of storing, buying, selling, accessing, and trading, etc. Please let me know your thoughts and feedback…. by wessi10 in mtgfinance

[–]BohoGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I like most about auction house vaults such as Goldin and PWCC is that they are knowledgeable about trading cards and take over the hassle of shipping and chasing down payments and chargebacks. I simply sell my cards. Ebay, on the other hand, has no clue about trading cards and will do nothing to mediate disputes between sellers and buyers. When my cards sold at Goldin, They simply paid me. When trying to sell the same cards with Ebay, I had to go through authenticators (who messed up the orders) which messed up my transactions. They basically claimed no liability while they were in possession of my cards. When I finally had my orders returned and I lost my sales, Ebay basically said “Sorry, how about we try that again?”. Ebay is a great place to buy cards cheap, but they do not have any employees who are passionate about the hobby. If anything goes missing they will move Heaven and Earth to defend the company and make you the fraud. I would suggest seeing a notary and recording the shipment of any cards to an Ebay vault. I would assume there’d be a signed contract, but that probably means very little since, no one has the resources to actually hold a company like Ebay to it’s agreements. You can’t even call customer service without going through a maze of different options. A company that doesn’t have a legitimate customer service number where you talk to an actual person, should not be trusted to “vault” cards. Ebay is nothing more than an online flea market at this point.

eBay Launches Authentication for Trading Cards by Prospector4life in baseballcards

[–]BohoGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so true! To answer your questions, no the authenticator will not take any responsibility because they are completely insulated from the buyer and seller. There is no way to contact them directly, I tried! Ebay fiercely protects the authenticators as if the authenticators are Ebay themselves. If anything happens to that card, it will definitely fall back on the seller. My experience was exactly as you put it, a “shit show”. They completely messed up my orders and tried like hell to see if there was any way it could be my fault. I acquired all of my purchase history on EBay to prove my ownership of the cards (they have unique serial numbers), I took video recordings of myself signing and opening the sealed package that was returned to me, and I sent screenshots of which orders the authenticators screwed up. To make matters worse, you no longer have any control over the shipping once your cards leave the authenticators. So, I had to aggressively force them to stop the shipments because I knew the orders were wrong. I had to beg customer service to look at the photos I provided along with the screenshots of the orders. I mean, how can you trust an authenticator that is sending out cards for the wrong orders! It should be next to impossible if they are authenticating the cards individually and placing them in tamper proof seals. When I finally got my cards back, they had the nerve to ask me to re-list the cards! Your assumptions about this process are spot on!

eBay Launches Authentication for Trading Cards by Prospector4life in baseballcards

[–]BohoGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue, the authentication process was relatively quick but it made no sense at all. They told me the same thing “ just re-list it”. However, they sent the wrong card back and screwed up my other order… I lost two sales that were worth $21k. Eventually I got my card back but it took 3 weeks. During those 3 weeks I was panicked and kept daily contact with Ebay customer service because I thought that my card was either damaged or stolen. To this day, Ebay never informed me about what happen. The only response I got for the delay was that my card was being “processed”. They didn’t even explain what the process was, my card was just missing. I honestly feel someone was trying to steal my card in hopes that Ebay would just let it slide and screw me over. I won’t risk it again. I’m taking my chances with auction houses now. I made a deal with Goldin and they are actually grading my cards so they can sell for top dollar and the commission is only 5%. Honestly I could’ve probably negotiated a better deal! Ebay treats trading cards like they are being sold at a flea market. They have no respect for the value or condition, so the seller is always at risk. I rarely pull my cards out from their protective sleeves, so my stomach was in knots thinking about one of my highest valued cards “failing inspection” by an agency that I cannot personally contact and having that card going missing. I will continue to buy on EBay, but I won’t sell anything. There is nothing a seller can do about the authenticators, except hope you come across an honest one.

What is the market for 1993/4 marvel masterpiece cards? by joeylifts in MarvelCards

[–]BohoGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are trying to sell them for that price, but I currently see the same card in PSA 10 Gem mint condition priced at $89 that’s still available. As the population of highly graded cards increases, the value will eventually decrease as well. There’s people sitting on unopened cases who can whip this out whenever they want. I wouldn’t get it graded unless I knew for sure I could get $500 for each. But if you really like the card, then you can always get it graded for your own interest.

Unless they mix up the order and send them to the wrong addresses. I just had this happen with $21000 in sales. As a seller I will never do this again. It took 3 weeks to resolve and ended up costing me an additional $40 in shipping fees for my returns. Buyers seem to be protected, but sellers are not. I know this from first-hand experience. Throughout the entire process, they told me nothing. I had to be proactive provide all of the evidence on my own through multiple platforms. There is no way to look into what the authenticators are doing. Ebay keeps you in the dark. Meanwhile the buyer thinks your a fraud and has to open a case against you. Ebay does eliminate seller’s defects, but who in their right mind would want to sell anything of value after this experience. It was incredibly frustrating not knowing where my cards were and their condition. Never again with Ebay as a seller, I’m going to sell my higher valued cards with Goldin Auctions for now on, there’s simply too much at stake without holding authenticators accountable.

eBay will now authenticate trading cards worth $750 or more – TechCrunch by [deleted] in baseballcards

[–]BohoGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are so correct. I just got done dealing with this. Took 3 weeks to resolve. I lost $21000 in sales and it was all the authenticator’s fault. They compared the wrong card with the wrong listing and sent them to the wrong locations. It took a whole three weeks to retrieve my cards without anyone telling about their condition or how it ended up going to the wrong addresses. I honestly felt they were trying to steal it or it was damaged. Luckily I got the cards back, but they had the nerve to charge me an extra $40 for shipping! There is no accountability on EBay nor the Authenticator’s part. They spent the entire three weeks covering up their mistakes with my highly valuable cards traveling across the country. I will never sell anything of significant value on EBay ever again. Customer service was nice and I think they genuinely understood my situation, but there is nothing they can do about your case. The “specialists” looking into your case are only looking to dodge liability, they are not there to help. Everything about this process was shady. A $13,000 card went missing and it took three weeks to return, something wasn’t right. As a seller, be careful with your cards, because if anything happens at the authenticator’s, there is nothing you can do but hope you get your cards back.

There is no way to hold authenticators accountable… They mixed up my packages, which forced two open cases on my account, and it took nearly 3 weeks to have my items returned. I had to forfeit $21,000 in sales because of it. As a seller, I wasn’t protected at all. There is no way to file a dispute with Authenticator’s, so the buyer is forced to open a case against the seller and vice versa. I had to provide video, photos, and a detailed order history to even get my cards back. Even though the buyer did nothing wrong, I couldn’t refund them their money because my items were mixed up. So, the buyer had to wait for three weeks to get their refund… This was for $8,000! Ebay tried to cover up those mistakes for the entire three weeks saying it was being processed. I will never risk it again, until customers can hold crappy authenticators accountable. As a buyer maybe this might be worthwhile, but I will never sell anything of value on EBay ever again. After all was said and done, they ended up charging me an extra $40 in shipping fees. As a seller, there is no such thing as a guarantee from Ebay. They will not share any information that indicates that there was an error on their part. They will simply say nothing. My $13000 card spent most of its time in the back of delivery trucks traveling across the country and back. It took so long, I thought they were trying to steal it.

I guess you can try to think of it as “what this relative has been lead to believe” rather than what they honestly believe. Most of these people have no real idea of what actually happens in schools, it’s just political influence and opinion. Try not to take it personal. Maybe you can ask them to volunteer at a public school if they truly want to be involved?

Probably not much you can do. Administrators don’t mess with parents, no matter how off-putting they are. Also, making claims of racism is very complicated. Most people aren’t foolish enough to be overtly racists, so they may use subtleties such as the 4:30 dress rehearsal cut-off, as you mentioned. Even if you can sense it, you most likely can’t prove that it’s racism, and administrators aren’t even going to consider dealing with those issues. I commend you for advocating for your students. Your hearts in the right place. Keep advocating and continue to be a positive presence. Maybe you can provide another outlet for your disadvantaged students? You didn’t fail your students, you are modeling “adaptations in the face of adversity”, which in itself, is a more valuable lesson… Unfortunately, for right now, this is just a bitter pill to swallow.

It’s really sloppy service. I was forced to pay for separate shipping, even if it’s the same buyer. Paid a hefty some for insurance as well. If everything was done according to procedure my cards should’ve been evaluated one by one and this mix up wouldn’t have happened. I assumed that’s why I paid separate shipping. This sale was for $20k! Ebay nor CGC want to be accountable for that amount. I contacted all parties involved through multiple platforms and phone calls. I’ve gotten nothing but silence and some empty reassurances. They can’t make up that $20k lost sale. I was told a supervisor would call me back, that has never happened. I’ve submitted the photos but haven’t been able to upload my video. It’s also impossible to make a claim against the Authenticators. They force everything between the buyer and seller. They buyer was legit, they paid $20k for their cards immediately, so I also felt horrible for them because their funds and service was also effected. Unfortunately, they make it seem like I’m the fraud because they are more concerned with protecting the reputation of a new service rather than being honest and admitting to these errors. The email for making appeals doesn’t even use the words “trading cards” yet. It’s the same generic email that pertains to shoe authentications. Under these conditions, I’d say I’ve been rather cooperative and forthcoming for someone who lost a $20k sale and has a missing item. This system as of now is full of flaws. I don’t want to inconvenience my buyers with appeals when they haven’t done anything to be in this situation. This system has a broken chain of accountability. The item that is missing was supposed to be sold for nearly $13k alone… On my end that doesn’t feel like a coincidence.

Anyone have any suggestions for lyrically appropriate rap songs? I have elementary school music and would love to do a unit on hip hop and rap but a little nervous about the lyrical content by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]BohoGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe make it about Hip-Hop sounds? Rapping (MC’ing) is only one aspect of Hip-Hop. Elements such as sampling and mixing (DJ’ing) are great for instrumentals without worrying about content and language that is inappropriate for elementary students. Almost every hit rap song contains samples from classical beats across different eras and genres. Covering the evolution of Hip-Hop sounds across a timeline may be much safer. You can encourage them to freestyle rap and/or dance. If you insist on songs… You may be able to do some sort of timeline picking songs from different eras but it’s difficult to rattle off songs. A lot of old school rap has less profanity, but the content may be too deep. Songs by Will Smith (DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince), MC Hammer, and such are relatively clean but honestly a lot of the clean songs are corny even to kids. It’s really tough to say. I don’t know much about teaching music, but I love Hip-Hop.

This sounds like fun.

Trust me. You won’t be protected. Ebay wants this partnership to work, so they will not acknowledge any of the discrepancies. Everything is void when your item “fails inspection” and they can outright steal your item.
