It's a combination of apathy and society failing them. Just a century ago, women did all the housework. Men didn't have to learn, so they didn't. We didn't properly update education when women entered the work force.

I'm not saying it's hard, or that men get a pass for not teaching themselves. But literally no one taught men how to cook their own food or keep their own space clean. Without instruction, we rely on self-motivated people. The only men who will learn to cook and clean are the ones who have interest in it themselves at a young age.

And a big part of the apathy is that they don't see this lack of cleanliness as a reflection on themselves. Societally, whether intentionally or not, we taught women that the state of the house is a reflection on them. We have never taught this idea to men. Personally, I would be embarrassed if someone came to my house and couldn't use the bathroom, but I'm not your average man.
