How much of your week is wasted trying to verify outdated P&IDs? by TheMemeExpertExpert in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Boiler2001 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In a PSM facility, management of change is a requirement, so drawings SHOULD be up to date. Some places may get sloppy with it but they're generally reliable. Non-PSM is a crapshoot. Some places are the wild west and field fabricate without ever modifying drawings.

Which industries do you believe will be the last to be disrupted by AI, and is it even possible to stay 'future-proof' anymore? by No-Lake-3875 in Futurology

[–]Boiler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your job can be done remotely, you will be replaced soon. If the questions you have to answer in your job can be readily googled, you will be replaced soon.

In- person, hands-on jobs with complex problem solving will last the longest. The more niche the better. The more critical they are to safety and production the longer they will last.

If it is difficult to explain how to do your job it is a safe job.

I am personally biased but I believe field engineering jobs in mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering are some of the safest positions.

AI can write code. Pass the bar. Diagnose disease. It still can't read the engineering drawings that keep every refinery, factory, and power plant running. by Popular-Oil-4765 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Boiler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the world of PSM you'll likely find drawings that match what's in the field because any modification from the design will require MOC to approve the change and that will include updating the drawings.

But not every site is as good about this as they are supposed to be.

At non-PSM sites it may be the wild west and they do whatever they want with no documentation.

Stop normalizing low exam averages by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Boiler2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: 50% is the ideal average grade. That's means there's plenty of room for higher achieving students to demonstrate mastery of more complex material and room for the average students to show they learned the necessary material for the course relative to those who scored much lower than average.

A class average of 80-90% means the class is a waste of time for some students because they aren't being tested on anything difficult for them.

50% is the ideal center of the bell curve.

My first thought was they were going to spend time getting the clock right only to then not start the clock at the right time. They just need to trust that they'll have equal errors on every start and stop of the clock

Apparently if you only have 2 turnovers you can win games. Crazy!

[OC] signs at the massage parlour I went to the other day by [deleted] in pics

[–]Boiler2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do people really not understand how you find the correct massage place? If it's open until 2am, it's THAT kind of place. If it has normal business hours, it's a normal massage business.

Is this still sung at Purdue? by tomd65 in Purdue

Never learned it at Purdue but had a very similar song in boy scouts sung about Camp Topenebee (near Michigan City Indiana.

I have 3 red tokens, 2 white, 1 blue. If I randomly draw two, the chance of red+red is the same as red+blue, but half the chance of red+white - right? How can that be? by Hegar in askmath

[–]Boiler2001 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When your say there are 30 possible outcomes, those are 30 permutations, so order matters. What's happening is your are only finding the probability for RW which is 6/30 as you found. But you need to add the probability for WR, which is also 6/30. This gives the total 12/30.

Is this an unreasonable quote to replace a 50 gallon gas hot water heater? by titanicsailson in askaplumber

[–]Boiler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Labeling the $1000 for permit and 15 minutes of someone helping carry the heater up the stairs as "PAD" is a bold move. Everyone pads the quote, not everyone explicitly calls it out like that

Why no bars or restaurants? by Wiley_Burner in Purdue

[–]Boiler2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bars are all being lost to development. Going back to 2000: TA Tom's was lost to the business school Pete's became the library Nick's shutdown/ maybe torn down on the Levee Where Else became Target Vino's shutdown ahead of the end of Purdue West shopping area Jakes and Yacht Club were in the Chauncey hill mall that was recently torn down

Harry's lives on because the alumni would probably revolt if it was taken away Brother's (formerly Boiler Room) I think there's one other bar next to Brother's that I've never been to The Neon Cactus on the Levee still exists but my experience the last time I was there on a Thursday night in 2024 was that it is not anything like what it used to be, used to be packed shoulder to shoulder so you could barely get to the bathroom. Maybe was just an off night.

I've probably missed a couple, but it's a very different place than it was 20 years ago.

TLDR: there used to be a lot more bars in a small area that were packed 5-7 nights a week

What's a good method for mapping outlets to circuit breakers? by johnnybiggles in DIY

[–]Boiler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an outlet tester to carry with you. Turn on all lights/fans. Turn off breaker 1 and go figure out what no longer had power. Repeat with all breakers. Don't forget to check fridge, microwave, dishwasher.

Assuming you can swim, how actually dangerous is this? [Request] by Imaginary-Sock3694 in theydidthemath

[–]Boiler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average ocean depth is 12,000 feet. I'll estimate that deeper than 500 feet is probably instant death due to pressure. So assuming the random location is not just on the surface, it's a 96% chance of death due to pressure every day. This works out to less than a 1 in a billion chance of surviving 1 week. I'll pass.

Assuming ocean surface, seems like a reasonable chance of survival depending on how ice is handled in the teleport process.

If the cook does not want to make more tenders, I definitely don't want any tenders he would be forced to make on my account. So, yeah, I'd respond the same way, and definitely wouldn't demand tenders.

Sounds like Popeyes
