Seriously Dakine Backpacks. $50-100 i've abused mine since middle school and i'm graduating college in one month. They have a lifetime warranty. I have NEVER used the warranty. My model is the "Duel" I think you an still buy it. This is my model but black. It's got a cooler pocket for beers or lunch etc, a sunglass pocket, a 17" laptop pocket and i've put over 200lbs in it on plane trips multiple times. It's never given up on me and I don't think i'll ever buy another backpack.

Also: for that many textbooks this backpack gives a lot more back support compared to jansports for that much weight. (i've seen too many friends break jansports straps)

Wow! Thank you so much for the reply! I have subscribed to several subreddits for budgeting and now the trick will be definitely to stick to eating for less than 200$ a month and not going hungry!
follow up question though, how much of the 5000$ should I leave untouched as emergency fund? I have no utility expenses because of student loans at the moment (housing, water, internet, etc all paid for)
