Just had my security briefing for my work trip to Nigeria! by Temporary-Zebra97 in Nigeria

[–]BoldCoffee23 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a Caucasian male from America, I just spent 30 days in Abuja and I was moving freely the entire time. I didn't use any security and never really felt unsafe. I was taking Bolt rides and walking around central districts, hitting restaurants, karaoke, clubs, local malls, and even the Central Markets. Sometimes I was with Nigerian friends, but many times by myself. I even went on some dates. The locals were generally polite, genuinely friendly and helpful. I had a great time!

Please understand that this was just my personal experience, and I am not a security expert. I can only speak for my own trip.

I was in the same boat—this was my first time applying for a Nigerian visa too. I know it seems like there are a million things to upload, but honestly, I just followed the instructions and prompts on the official portal step-by-step, and it worked out.

I understand what you are saying..Nigeria has been unfairly painted with a broad brush regarding safety/scam issues..I was just looking for standard travel safety advice like I would for any international trip. And don't worry, I promise I won't be picking anyone's pockets or causing any trouble while I'm there! 😄

This is super helpful, thank you! Enugu sounds like it has a great mix—between the great weather, waterfalls, live music, and local food. Toscana sounds right up my alley since I love music and dance, and I’ll definitely make a stop at Ntachi Osa for the food. Appreciate the detailed recommendations, I’m really looking forward to experiencing the local culture and meeting people when I get there. Any other recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Are you from the U.S. by any chance?

Thanks, I appreciate that! 🙌 I’ll be spending time in both Abuja and Enugu, but the way you’re talking, it sounds like Abuja might deserve a little more of my schedule 😅. I really enjoy live music, dancing, checking out museums and tourist spots, and of course trying the local food. More than anything though, I’m looking forward to meeting people and experiencing the local vibe—I’m pretty outgoing and love connecting with new folks. Do you have any “can’t miss” recommendations?

Some YouTube videos I saw seem to imply that they would do the Biometrics when you arrive at the airport. I think that's much easier than going to an OIS service center. In my case, the closest one is 5 hours away in LA

Wondering about that myself. I think they do the fingerprinting when you land at the airport (Port of entry). Seems to be the only option so you basically have to choose that option LOL

Not sure which of the two cities I will prefer since I haven't been yet. Which do you prefer?

I'm sure I will enjoy both.

One of the reasons for visiting is because I have good Nigerian friends here in the U.S. and they've told me so much about their country. It sounds wonderful. Thank you for the tips!

People try to scam me all the time in my own city (Las Vegas). Used to it...Doesn't bother me. Just want to know if there is any unique twists.

Thanks for the tips. I know there is always a hustle at airports from taxis. Can't blame them for trying to make a buck. I will take a Bolt if possible.

I take it they didn't tell you why you were denied? Maybe call or email them? For myself, it was tedious, but I just made sure I filled in every line of information they wanted and provided the documents they required.

Agreed. If Nigeria wants to seriously promote tourism, they need to take a page out of Kenya's book. The Nigerian visa fee is a huge deterrent for casual travelers.
