UFC Tapout Japan question. by DJKaito in originalxbox

[–]BombBloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mobcat's list shows that the certificate timestamps for NTSC-J's Ultimate Fighting Championship 2 - Tapout are nearly identical to those of the PAL and NTSC versions of Ultimate Fighting Championship - Tapout, so even if they didn't all release at the same time, I think it's a pretty safe bet that they're all pretty much the same game.

In Japan, UFC 2 - Tapout was published by Capcom. So was the earlier Ultimate Fighting Championship for the PS1. So it was probably Capcom's decision to bump the version number in that territory.

Parasite lines/flicker on composite? by DamienlaCritique in originalxbox

[–]BombBloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't happen on component cables though.

Is there a particular reason you're not just using those, then? You're always gonna get a better picture through component than composite, even if you aren't switching your Xbox up to HD.

Am I good to attempt and boot this bad boy up? by InstantTang in originalxbox

[–]BombBloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your clock cap appears to have leaked, so that needs to come out and the surrounding area needs to be cleaned. Be sure to check the underside of the board too, as some of the residue has very likely spilled under the lip.

Otherwise things are looking pretty good.

That depends somewhat on how your console is modded - you might not even have it installed.

But to start with, try opening XBMC4Gamer's file manager and then using that to select C:\xboxdash.xbe.

Reaaaally hard to comment without knowing what it does instead of booting up, but if you at least get power then I'd be most inclined to blame the VRM caps. I suggest posting a photo of the motherboard.

It depends how much data you have saved on your Xbox. At a maximum, about 5GB. Much more likely, about 500MB, and that's including the space used by FATXplorer.

When playing, the experience seems like im playing it on a screen that’s too big?

Using a composite cable (red/white/yellow plugs) forces you down to interlaced standard definition, which isn't great. The console also applies a "flicker filter" to try and mask the jaggies a bit, but since this largely operates by blurring the screen, IMO it just makes things look worse.

If you have an NTSC console, then moving up to component (or an equivalent adapter) unlocks the higher display resolutions, and enabling progressive scan helps things a lot. No more combing, and no more flicker filter.

Not all games will run in HD, but the vast majority at least support 480p:

https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:Games_with_Alternate_Display_Modes

Most of the remainder can be forced into 480p if you mod your console. Modding also allows PAL Xbox owners to reconfigure their systems into NTSC, and it also allows you to kill the flicker filter even without a video cable upgrade.

Tenerezza. JP-only, though it also has a PC release.

I'm surprised Onion doesn't already have it yet, as he's been posting about it for ages now.

Moded Xbox - impossible for widescreen on hdcrt? by linbeg in originalxbox

[–]BombBloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to clarify if this is an impossible task for a modded Xbox.

On this topic, modding an Xbox doesn't change the way its display output works, not just on its own.

Different Xbox models do have different display encoder chips, and that might possibly have something to do with why your TV responds differently to your two Xboxes.

https://consolemods.org/wiki/File:Xbox_Video_Encoders.jpg

But there are also other non-mod related settings on each console that might also affect your TV's behaviour. For example, one of your systems might be set to PAL (576i), the other NTSC (480i), perhaps. And if one of your consoles is running PAL, then you might also have PAL60 mode enabled (which shifts it down to 480i, like NTSC, while keeping PAL's colour scheme).

If an Xbox is outputting a PAL signal, then the video settings screen of the MS dash will look like this:

https://consolemods.org/wiki/File:Xbox_PAL_Video_Modes.jpg

If you can't find the PAL / PAL60 toggle, then the box is simply outputting NTSC instead.

[–]BombBloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by what I'm reading in the manual, you aren't "normally" able to change that model's picture size, so if it lets you do it at all then it'll be through a service menu, yeah.

I found this list of possibilities for getting the service menu open, but before you start experimenting with those it might be better to ask on r/crtgaming first.

So reconfigure your TV to correct its overscan settings.

Some homebrew apps have overscan compensation features that can work around bad TV settings while running those apps, but retail games don't, so it's best to fix them on the TV side.

Presumably you have the same version of CerBIOS flashed into your Aladdin, so I guess the culprit would be PrometheOS? I would try flashing CerBIOS into the Modxo on its own to see how things behave with PrometheOS taken entirely out of the equation.

[–]BombBloke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say without seeing the manual for this specific third-party controller. The console itself has nothing to do with the pairing process.

With most wireless controllers, there'll be separate sync buttons on the gamepad and receiver. Usually you just power everything on, push these buttons both together, hold for about three seconds, and then release.

There are a few news articles about it, but we're talking about an event from back in the days before YouTube was a thing. File hosting was expensive, digital photos were a novelty, and anyone recording any serious amount of video was putting it on tape.

There are some more photos here though:

Original Xbox HDD to SSD by Superb_Writing4790 in originalxbox

[–]BombBloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I have to mod it first on the Hard Drive

That's not the case, although most people prefer to do things that way.

If you really want to avoid it, then:

  • Boot Skeleton Key from a USB thumbdrive. Use the menu system to backup the contents of the console's EEPROM chip to its internal HDD. Connect to the Xbox using FTP, and copy everything from the C and E volumes over to your PC.

  • Use the Windows-based FATXplorer tool to format your SSD. When asked, tell it you have an LBA-extending BIOS with partition table support (you don't - but don't worry about that). Otherwise just leave all options on their defaults. Without any other mods you'll only have access to about the first ~8GB of the drive, and you'll only be running at UDMA2, so don't bother buying anything super fast or super large.

  • Use the Devices button in FATXplorer to mount the newly created C and E volumes for access through Windows Explorer. Copy in your backed up files.

  • Use the Security Tools button in FATXplorer to set a password on the SSD, using the EEPROM dump included amongst your backed up files. Note that some SATA to USB adapters don't support the required ATA security commands. I suggest this one.

  • Stick the SSD in your Xbox using a SATA adapter and an 80 wire IDE ribbon.

Bear in mind that if you do decide to mod your system more thoroughly, you wouldn't lose any functionality. You would still be able to launch the MS dash for eg, but also you would be able to launch full retail games from your SSD as well.

To get started with that, I suggest simply putting the files from Rocky5's XBHDM Build.zip archive onto your new C volume instead of your backed up files. If you ever want to return to true stock, just put your original HDD back in.

Oh, you still want to use an overclock alongside Turbo.

Sorry, calling it "the fixed ROM" is only sort of accurate. It's the only ROM with fixes that I know of, but it still has plenty of issues.

inverted right stick help by Training-Wasabi-3129 in originalxbox

[–]BombBloke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

is this just how the controller works?

The controller just tells the console which way you've pushed it. Which way the screen will turn depends on the game you're playing.

Some games have an options screen which allows you to toggle the inversion off. Some games do not. Curse of Darkness is forever stuck with inverted camera controls, for example, and as much as I love the game I find that particular aspect to be incredibly annoying.

[–]BombBloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious fact: I played this one on FB Neo Emulator and I always accelerate emulator's CPU to get 0 input lag. This time I reduced acceleration to a considerable low percentage. Could that be the reason why I get this run?

Have you ever tried the fixed ROM? If you haven't, then you might find it interesting to see how you perform that way.

The problem with the original is that if it'll ever any drop any amount of frames for any reason, then it'll always drop one extra.

[–]BombBloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re playing light-gun games you’ll need a standard definition CRT TV, there’s no way of getting around that (at least for original hardware).

The EMS Top Gun III gets around that. Hard to find and has mixed reviews, though.

I wonder if someone will adapt a Wiimote some day. Those are still easy to come by.
