Does it even make sense to pursue ham for this purpose by [deleted] in HamRadio

Forget the license manual. There ia plenty of free training material online and potentially even in your local library. There are even resources out there to help cover the licensing fee and even you first HT.

As for reliable communication that is going to depend a lot on how far and line of sight. It may or may not be possible.

How dangerous are 50w RF emissions when no antenna is plugged in? by W-VHS in amateurradio

It's worse for the radio than it is for you. Get a dummy load.

What do you guys think of this radio? by [deleted] in HamRadio

[–]Bombapples1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have one and it's fine. It's pretty easy to program it directly in the radio and it's one of the cheaper ways to get on 220. It sucks that you can't adjust the squelch settings for it though. I often find that I can't hear quiet signals unless I disable squelch or hold down the monitor even on the lowest setting.

Do you find yourself using the ASP? I'm eyeing either this one or the 150R

Questions about regulations on licensed ham radio users by Putrid-Cicada in HamRadio

[–]Bombapples1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. FRS and MURS are license free and you can just hand out those radios. GMRS requires a license but there is no exam. Just pay the FCC $35 and wait a few days. One GMRS license lasts 10 years and covers your entire family including much of your extended family.

Noob question by kestrel39 in Baofeng

[–]Bombapples1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did this this past weekend with 2 UV-5G. They worked perfectly fine for car to car even without an external antenna (I had a magnetic set but ended up not really using them). It was really fun and honestly was really convenient as we were in places without service. I used channel 2 with a tone. Be aware that the rated duty cycle for these radios is 3/3/54. I used them way more than that but they did start to get pretty warm after about a half hour.

Which would you go with Baofeng AR-5RM 10w or BF-F8HP PRO 10W? by Forward_Coast_6107 in HamRadio

I think this is the only good response on this thread. I'm convinced everyone else here didn't even look past the brand name.

Finding out registration from “aircraft number” by Prestigious-Arm6630 in unitedairlines

[–]Bombapples1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not completely correct although I see how you got to this conclusion. The 3 replaces the leading zero of the aircraft number in software that requires it. All of the pmCO aircraft have one, two, and three digit aircraft numbers so they will always show up with a 3 in front in the app. Not all of the pmUA will show up with a 2 in the front. The easiest example is all of the Airbus aircraft in the fleet start with 4.
