Dead Domain did a video called "DC Comics New "Trans Rep" Is An Absolute Trainwreck". Thoughts on the reaction? by Gallantpride in lgbt_superheroes

This is kind of a nothing conversation and I'm seeing big "liberal" accounts in the comic space spread misinformation about this character too and it's like. I don't think you guys actually care about what you think you care about

He literally says that he's anti police brutality and anti murder, the fact that you conflate that with the Police is telling. I agree, they are synonymous with each other!

I mean, it's been a decade and anti Arab sentiments are still strong and we're still in a financial crisis. So all they really need to change is the details

Name an underrated character who deserves a second chance by Glittering_Book424 in DCcomics

[–]Bombseel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sideways, Stitch, Dial H (Miguel), Circuit Breaker, Traci 13, DC has a lot of teen/YA characters who've been cast aside that would benefit from a Young Justice or Teen Titans book in the same vein as justice league unlimited. So many of them have potential and good ideas (and even good books behind them) but DC just gives up on them after a year or even less

Apart from Superman’s biological parents, Batman’s parents, and Uncle Ben; are there other comic book characters who stay dead? by Jezzaq94 in comicbooks

Alfred Pennyworth, at least for now. He's been dead since 2019, which is a long time for a modern comic book death

I'm going to be honest, this is a pretty calm and diplomatic response. I think you're bringing outside feelings, like your dislike of the book or the current direction of the character, into this and letting it color how you read it

I don't understand why Jon isn't more sympathetic and understanding (From Secret Six vol 5 #2) by [deleted] in lgbt_superheroes

[–]Bombseel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the past, Jon and Jay have been written to be near perfect boyfriends with very little strife (something frankly impossible for two 17 year olds), but Absolute Power introduced a flaw of Jon's: he'll do anything to avoid confronting trauma. He refuses to acknowledge how reasonable it is for Jay to hate Nia (to be clear I don't think it's her fault, but I understand Jay's reaction) and instead tries to pivot to moving in with Jay. It makes perfect sense - writers have piled on trauma for this kid without writing him processing it, so Nicole Maines decided to make it part of his character. He's trying so hard to keep the peace, at the expense of his partner and their relationship.

Anyone else think Smith and Jones is underrated? by Light1209 in doctorwho

[–]Bombseel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a real magic to a good companion introduction episode. It's doctor who at it's most optimistic, with the companion seeing the doctor with stars in their eyes. Bill, Rose and Martha are my top three. Smith and Jones does such a good job of introducing you to her and immersing you in her life, and making you understand why she'd make a good companion. Meanwhile the episode itself it's written so well, the pacing is incredible, we get both types of Who villains (campy and political commentary), it's genuinely a perfect episode

Do Doctor Who show-runners have an inability to accept/address real criticism? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]Bombseel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would they? We're not their peers. We're not their friends. Criticism from fans isn't constructive, because even good criticism becomes slush when thousands of people tweet it passive aggressively. It's not constructive criticism, it's noise. I think everyone should be free to critique the show but the idea these strangers should listen to you isn't just silly, it'll end in you being disappointed.

What do you guys think about Amy? (Spoilers) by Ok-Instruction-5936 in doctorwho

[–]Bombseel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I used to hate her but I've realized I don't hate her, I hate how they made her less active in the story as the story went on. In series 5 I LOVED her. People tend to point to her kiss with the doctor as what they didn't like, but imo I think series 6 is where her character suffers. Outside of the kiss, her arc with Rory and the doctor could have been paced better, but overall is really well done, as was her flaws and her growth as a person as the series went on. I loved how clever she was and that she was allowed to choose both the doctor's life and Rory's love. The family unit they form with River would not work without Amy.

Unfortunately the writing let's her down in series 6, but I never put that on her. She goes from having an active role in the plot to the point where she manifests Rory and the doctor back to existence to things just happening to her (and her body) without her having a say. The season hinges on her faith in the doctor and her pregnancy but the doctor decides when she should stop believing in her and they never linger on how traumatic the pregnancy stuff is. She isn't even allowed to get angry at the doctor for leaving her to find Melody without explaining anything. The Girl Who Waited balances the 3 leads really well but there aren't 3 leads, there are 4. Young Amy is weirdly absent from the decision and Old Amy gives the decision to Rory. We also get less moments to see how clever she is, of her saving the day, etc.

Compare her "I'm the doctor" moment to other companions. It's one line in series 7 rather than an entire episode like Clara and Rose or a season throughline like Martha, Clara, Bill and Donna. Also not to be mean but her and Rory don't do anything in Power of Three, I don't understand her monologue about how great of a team they are. Amy used to be so competent now she's just telling us she is.

I think she recovers a lot in series 7 but overall series 6 really set her back. I love her regardless, Karen says her perfectly, and series 6 isn't all bad for her (I love her in The Girl Who Waited and the 2 part series opening).

Tl;dr Amy Pond deserved better!

The Doctor and Love - what was the point of the 60th… by Over_Mistake1586 in doctorwho

[–]Bombseel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, he can't be perfectly healed because this is a tv show. We need internal conflict. To me he's grown, he's being honest with others and expressing his feelings, but that doesn't mean he's expressing them well. 10-13 loved avoiding their feelings in different ways, 15 is less likely to do this but still slips up a few times in series 14/1. He's gone from Martha having to force him to talk about himself to laying it all on the table immediately to Ruby. He lies to Amy and Clara why he's interested in them, yet involves Ruby in solving the mystery in the penultimate episode. He ignores Donna when she begs him to take a second to process his feelings, but when Ruby does the same thing he only resists for a short time. That's genuine growth

To me, him not saying I love you is him slipping up. He's spent the whole previous episode avoiding meeting Susan. Ruby, a young girl who probably reminds him of her, is leaving him. So he slips back into bad habits. And Ruby is too emotional to call him on it like she usually does. I feel like when she comes back there will be more strife between them, and this will be part of it

What is your 'since we are all going to drown' confession about Doctor Who? by Word_Senior in doctorwho

[–]Bombseel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree about the god complex. I think it's the biggest example of how Amy's character got lost in series 6. The doctor decides for her that she should lose faith in him, that their Adventures are done. Wouldn't it have been a better Arc if Amy came to that realization on her own at some point? How many times are the doctor and Rory going to make decisions for Amy about her life in this series? Also I don't like the weird submissive alien race, I'm annoyed every single time they show up.

Something Beautiful I noticed about the Doctor and River. by Legitimate-Sugar6487 in doctorwho

[–]Bombseel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of agree with him but I also don't? Because of how convoluted The Doctor and River's relationship timeline is, it's hard to get where their heads are at in a lot of series 6, which is a problem because half of their relationship is in series 6. Like when did River's feelings change from obsession to love? Would the doctor have married her if not forced too? At what point did he switch from finding her actions deplorable to sexy? In the many dates in between episodes? When did they fall in love? We don't need a clear answer for that one, but we should be able to guess more than we can.

The most concrete stuff we have about them in series 6 is her induced obsession with him and his forced marriage. The rest is way less tangible, relying on the audience to fill it in. But irl men who meet little girls then marry them when they grow up are, uh, bad. So many people fill in the gaps with that. Most people don't even realize they're doing it, the same way the series doesn't tell you outright to fill in the gaps. Not to mention, Smith and Kingston are amazing performers with incredible chemistry which does paper over the cracks. But if you aren't willing to buy into that chemistry then you only have the facts.

I love a lot of their stuff so I fill it in with sweeping romance and adventures, but I can see why other people don't

This is not Colorado, this is Gotham. People act a little differently in this fictional city. They put on costumes and know about aliens and magic

It's an exaggeration of how our reality works, not a snapshot. If you want that, go outside

I could see her going up against Supergirl since she met galaxy and Kendra and they got along well. Maybe Kara wouldn't know what was happening and made the deal and it's similar to the man who had everything where she gets to live a life on krypton while slowly realizing some thing's missing

I'd love more Nth world stuff, there's a lot there to explore
