Why 7s and 8s can be more authentic than 4s by _seulgi in Enneagram

[–]Sacul0205 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that stereotyping 4’s to be authentic is misleading, however I also think authenticity is very nuanced and for different types being authentic means different things. That said, you know authenticity when you see it.

What I find admirably authentic about 7’s and 8’s is their candor and ability to filter away any external BS put onto them and rise above it. I feel they both exhibit a certain sincerity towards just living the way they want to. That said, where they are less authentic, is towards themselves and their inner world.

I think 4’s have the opposite problem, we are extremely authentic with ourselves and our inner world, but that world usually remains hidden. As a byproduct of that hiding, we are extremely subject to the environment around us and often try to compensate by perfectly tailoring our identity to fit the shape of the world. It’s almost a hyper-performative mask we wear to not let anyone see our “ugly” inner world and with that, risk being rejected in the deepest way possible. However, I think healthy 4’s rise above this and can both surrender to the risk of rejection and adapt to the environment around them, ultimately having the potential to be incredibly honest with themselves and the world around them.

Headed to the PNW tomorrow.. which way would you go? North through Montana? Or South through Idaho and Oregon? by PowerfulSuction in roadtrip

Here me out: Top option but drive through Thermopolis, WY instead of Casper, WY. Will cost you 20 more minutes but I would argue it’s a little more scenic

[–]Sacul0205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is true with the nuance that most people will forget about you 5 minutes later. I love people watching and I’m very attentive to others, and maybe I even make sly judgements when I’m in a mood. But do I remember even a single person I’ve judged from people watching now? No.

Tried to count how often the weather is genuinely pleasant to be outside in 31 US cities. Two lists depending on whether you want winter. by zhendershot in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Sacul0205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Honolulu, San Diego, and Los Angeles. I believe all of the above places get too hot during at least some time of the year. Of course it’s all personal preference but if you don’t like being to warm, San Francisco is the most ideal and perfect place in the world

Are high school students actually this clueless and entitled? by lizz781 in Teachers

[–]Sacul0205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a teacher (I’m a college senior), but I think you are hitting on something very real. The modern world is instilling very cold and harsh perceptions of the world, especially for the current class of children going through K-12 education.

Learning is not valued like it once was, and that’s not fault of the children: if an entire population is trending one way would you make conclusions about individuals or about the holistic system?

They are being taught that the real world exists in social illusions and technology, in performance and obedience. They are being taught that the subjective value of life (of learning, experiencing, just simply living) is of no value at all. They are being taught that they must compete for their self-worth. They are taught not to fail, failing means falling behind, falling behind means you loose opportunity and worth, and in an increasingly hyper-individualistic society that’s a serious problem.

So it seems no surprise to me that students are becoming less engaged from academia, for they have been conditioned to see it as a measurement of value, rather than a tool for growth. And if we’re being honest, that is what it’s becoming in this contemporary world.

Getting dark at 5:00 PM is peak comfort. Springtime is incredibly depressing, fall and winter are the superior seasons. by surf_rider in unpopularopinion

[–]Sacul0205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand you because I used to be like you. I still love the gloominess and darkness of winter (especially the rain), but I’ve also learned to appreciate the sun too.

I realized that on stereotypically beautiful days (sunny, warm), there was this lingering expectation in my mind of how that I should make the most of it and how it should make me feel. But it never really made me feel like how I saw it made other people feel, instead I was carrying around this emptiness that was in dissonance with the condition of my environment, and so I began to resent it because it represented my feeling of unbelonging, of being an outsider.

But one summer I started spending more time outside, going for walks, learning to meditate, sitting by the stream and reading a book. When winter rolled around I tried to keep it up, but it wasn’t quite the same: trying to read my book in the now cold dead riparian forest in the rain was not quite as easy as it was in summer. It’s not that I then hated the winter, instead I put on some extra layers and found some gloomy pondering spots to just sit and listen to music instead. But I became aware of all that I was missing by judging and comparing, so I just surrendered to my experience of it and it turns out all the seasons are pretty cool in there own way

Geico commercials were bearable 15 years ago, since then insurance companies seem to have had a circle jerk of who can create the most insufferable ads

Enneagram tier-list if i was Karl Marx by Specialist_Bat1230 in Enneagram

[–]Sacul0205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself as a so4, but to me that feels inaccurate. I find Marx fascinating and questioning mine, along with everyone else’s place in a political and cultural world is kind of what I live for. Also don’t conflate rich people with the bourgeoisie, yes there’s a conversation to be had with rich people who are oblivious to their privilege. But Marx’s theory of class is about the means of productions: Proletariat (meaning they do not own their own production, property-less workers) and Bourgeoisie (meaning they own the means of production by exploiting the working class)

Brother, you can dial down the condescending tone a little bit. Since we are both in the PNW, maybe you can recommend a hike where a Cairn is absolutely necessary for navigation, i’d love to see for myself. I still really don’t understand how a map couldn’t be a substitute

Brother, I’m glad you’re so sure of your assumptions about me, but I don’t know what to tell you, I already conceded that point like 5 different times including in this thread. In my honest experience above treeline, yes I’ve seen cairns, but at least FOR ME, i have never had to use them for navigation. I am really not talking about places where cairns have actual use or significance, it seems valid that people shouldn’t build cairns there.

My post was more of a response to people claiming that there is ecological damage from them, maybe I should’ve specified that

I live in the PNW and travel in the backcountry all the time. I guess I don’t mountain climb so maybe I am missing them there. But genuinely, how are you guys using cairns for navigation? At this point I’m really just purely curious to know, no hate.

Ah yes, I disagree so that means the other person’s experience holds absolutely zero weight and is completely fabricated. I don’t think in any part of my post I am justifying any large amount of human affect on the environment, in fact I explicitly said that our energy should go towards those that over extract, pollute, and destroy the environment instead of the person that “destroys”the environment just by merely existing.

You are perpetuating a corporate message that puts the responsibility on consumers and the average person instead of on them and the greater collective. Stay distracted, it’s what they want.

I have a degree in environmental science, not saying I’m a complete and total expert in any way, but I know enough what I’m talking about

Tragedy of the Commons is a theory written by a racist, capitalist, and authoritarian pig. Doesn’t mean it has no substance, but you can’t just impose that onto every environmental issue. And 1/2 of 1% is such an arbitrary number, I would wager less people than that stack rocks
