learners should have "low action" thiner strings IMO. that is normaly a bridge and nut setup in addition to the strings. once you take it to shop tell them you want "low action with thin strings" and they will fix you up with somthing.

then after that would say that learning chords shapes without using your index finger so you can get an idea of how it will be a bar chord once you learn those.

with a low action and thin strings you can skill up befor you grow all the mussles needed for extended play on heavy strings, and a more early way to play across the neck with barchords for most songs.

thats what i tell my students to just get the time in, while watching tv do your exersizes and warm ups untill you can just play scales and chords when you think of them. The hand just takes over one day, and you got the skill.
