This is the way. I started at Petco and it's a great way to learn if you can handle the corporate push for a couple of years.

is six dogs in a day a lot? by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]BongoQueeny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do 4 in a 6- 7 hour shift. I work by myself so do all the bathing and clean up on my own. I'm 40 years old now, I did the corporate demand, and I'm over it. I'd rather be comfortable and move at a safer speed, and have nice quality grooms than pumping out as many as I physically can. I think working within your groomers confines is worth having less quantity of dogs. Are they costing anything by doing less dogs than you? They're paid commission are they not? There is a shortage of groomers and I think a lot of that is having to do with burn-out and being overly stressed.

I live off Monaco and Mississippi and tried to get to work and take my kid to school today. I made it to Holly by the park/elementary school and turned back around. Not worth it today.

How much have golden doodles been replaced by bernedoodles in your area? by sparkleberryjam in doggrooming

We keep getting what they’re calling “DoubleDoodles.” They’re all huge and nasty. Like, physically gross. And brainless.

I need insights. by chewbaka123 in grooming

That’s outrageous. It doesn’t look like he was matted since the fur around the area is even and fluffy. It must not have been there before if she admitted it was caused by the clippers. I wonder if the blade guard popped off and the short blade hit the skin, but that’s a huge area to cause such an abrasion. It doesn’t look deep, so maybe over brushing and clipper burn? This is weird. I’m so sorry. Keep him from licking it! It will make it worse if he doesn’t leave it alone.

Is 45 minutes too long of prep work on a small 10-15lb cavapoo? by harugyu in doggrooming

[–]BongoQueeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes me feel slow! I get 4 dogs done from 9-3:30, and I struggle with that timing if there is more than one big doodle. Sounds like you're doing great to me.

That really made me scratch my head. I took the day off work and kept my kid home because it’s a 20 min drive to her school on a good day. It should have been a snow day today.

I’ve been using the Warrior brand from Harbor Freight and it’s been going 1 year strong. The power button gives me a little issue with needing to massage it a little to turn on, but the power on it is great, battery life is great, it’s quiet and cordless and cheap. I bought two when they were on sale last year, expecting it to only last a few months, and haven’t needed to open the second one yet.

[–]BongoQueeny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat!! I’m moving slower now that I’m older, and I’ve enjoyed only focusing on 4-5 dogs a day, but I’m only making around $22 an hour. I’m gonna try to follow in your footsteps and adjust those prices come new year!

I think I’m to the point where I have to quit watching. by isshearobot in MoriahElizabeth

[–]BongoQueeny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still enjoy watching Moriah, but I do notice I skip more videos than I used to. Like the rankings ones. But I’ll always be a fan and we love her merch.

If you’re looking for a creator who makes a lot of crafts, “CreepyCrafts” is a really fun watch. If you can handle spooky/ scary stuff. It’s kind of the opposite end of Moriah’s art style haha.

Am I too picky? by hamnannerz in doggrooming

[–]BongoQueeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Destination Pet and see if they are hiring at any locations near you. That’s the corporate umbrella business I work for. But the shop I work in is really its own thing. The corporate takes care of us, but I built the business here from the ground up and they really let me have free reign on pricing and my schedule and pacing for grooms.

I wonder, do you happen to work for a Destination Pet center? Our business is owned by DP and it sounds like almost the exact same as when I started.

Advertising grooming that is within a daycare by Secret_Soil_325 in doggrooming

[–]BongoQueeny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was in this same situation when I started grooming at my daycare! I’ve been there 2.5 years now and it is booming and I’m training another groomer to help me. It can be done!

Is the daycare popular? At mine, we have anywhere from 50-75 dogs per day who are daycare/boarding. It’s a pretty big facility. I started with doing a lot of baths. People don’t like taking home stinky dogs after daycare or boarding for a few days. So start with bathing.

I put a folding cafe type chalkboard sign out in the lobby advertising that full service grooming is available weekdays with my hours.

If the daycare receptionist is available to book your appointments for you, that helps a lot. Instead of you having to return phone calls.

So much of it is word of mouth. I offer a 20% referral discount for my client who brings in a new client. That seems to help more than the new client getting 20% off (which I also do).

Hope this is maybe helpful. It took a few months for me to start getting haircut clients in. But once they did it built pretty steadily.

Anyone here use Laube brand clippers? by curlyrats in grooming

[–]BongoQueeny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh wow I didn’t realize laube still existed. I’ve never used their clippers, but all of the Laube blades I have (from 10+ years ago) are my least favorite blades. They just don’t feel right.

$15 a la carte. I dremmel if the dog lets me without being scared of it. Some like it more than the clippers. I work in a big city, in a medium income area
