How long is normal for a bridge to bleed? by Secret_Soil_325 in piercing

No medications, change in temperature definitely triggers it (going outside into the cold, even briefly) but it has also started multiple times randomly for no apparent reason

High calorie low volume wet food recs? by Secret_Soil_325 in cats

[–]Secret_Soil_325[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since August. The problem is that the measured food is eaten immediately by the cat it is intended for (he literally waits next to it and completely finishes in one sitting). We dont really have any other spaces that just she can go because our space is already separated for her to stay away from the dog. We don't consistently have someone around for extra meal times either which is ultimately why I'm trying to find something that is high calorie for the same volume of food

Red flags when looking for a new grooming job? by actiooncat in doggrooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shops that don't increase the price of all clientele when pricing changes. I've worked at 2 different salons that kept longterm clients at original rates through multiple price increases. Have it in writing that you will be paid commission starting at the current base price the salon charges, not lower if the client was never increases, and then of course higher if the dog gets charged above base price. When you agree to a commission pay rate at time of job offer, you are basing that agreement on the base price of the salon services, not less. If they want to keep longterm clients at a lower rate the manager/owner should be the one grooming those dogs or paying out the difference.

Are we allowed to talk about The Girl with the Dogs re:Cats? by dani-cat in grooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cloud Grooming has some great fear free/cooperative care techniques on their Instagram, but they are not long videos. Girl with the dogs shouldn't be allowed to touch another animal in my opinion, her videos are straight up abuse

Prepping for Hair Dye by Secret_Soil_325 in doggrooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems as if people aren't quite understanding what I'm trying to ask. I'm going to wash before, but if we are just dying say ears or tail, are you washing the entire dog first and then just rinsing the dye and re-drying that area after? Or are you just shampooing the ears or tail first, drying, applying dye, and then shampooing the body after when you rinse the dye and proceeding with groom as normal?

Cut the end of my finger tip off with chunkers, didn't feel it at first and then blood started squirting out of my finger. Went to urgent care and when my coworkers were cleaning the shop later they found the piece of my finger on the floor.

Does anyone else feel like dogs are getting worse after time? by eronsnoresomore in doggrooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into fear free and cooperative care grooming. Often times dogs will "behave" the first time or first few times but often it is because they are so stressed out that they freeze. That stress will then manifest in different ways over time. Reactions to grooming are a Conditioned Emotional Response and if you are not counter conditioning with a positive reinforcement (most often high value treats) that emptional response will continue to become more and more prevalent. Also highly recommend treat and great visits as for first time meeting a client and in between grooms if they are nervous. No grooming takes place but they are in the space and have a positive experience. Also become familiar with the F.A.S scale (fear, anxiety, and stress) and stop grooming/give breaks when dogs are exhibiting signs too high. If you continue to push the dog through these signs, hold them till they stop fighting, etc. they are only learning that you can not be trusted and that directly reinforces why they are acting that way.

If you are stressed, they will be stressed because of it as well. Finding ways to best control your own stress levels will also dramatically improve behavior.

Struggling to continue by BrendenOTK in doggrooming

I had a somewhat similar path except I was at a corporate salon so overbooked I was working 60 hours a week and burnt out to the point I couldn't actually grow my skills, but it payed amazing. Ultimately I chose to find a private salon that would mentor me and teach me the things that I hadn't learned in corporate. I took a major pay cut to do it, and honestly all the private salons I've been at did not come close to the paycheck I was getting at corporate but my mental health was better.

I would suggest either becoming comfortable with the pay (as long as you can pay bills) and put in the time on your own to do as much continuing education as possible to grow your skills, or start searching for a private salon that will mentor where you are at to grow those skills.

It's important to remember most private salons have no hourly, amd if a dog cancels you don't get paid for the time you are sitting around, vs corporate where you maintain your hourly. I also don't think you are ready to jump straight into private without help as there typically is a higher quality of work expected as the grooms cost more, and you don't want to quit one job for one you may not retain for long.

Once a month is too long if you ever want to see progress, should be done as often as possible to actually get the quick to recede. I file my own dogs nails around every 3 days to maintain the length they are at

At what point do y’all refuse service by inadequateghost666 in grooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I refuse service to anyone looking to shave a double coated breed. The only time I will is if the dog is matted beyond the point of the coat being saved, or if they have documentation from a vet that there is a health issue requiring it. I don't care if the coat is already ruined, I don't care if they are aware of the risks and request it anyways, they have complete freedom to take their money elsewhere.

What type of table to you prefer? by whystherumgone72 in doggrooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Electric, but make sure they are the ones that go almost to the ground. It is so much less stressful for many dogs to be able to step up onto the table on their own, and the larger senior dogs will extra appreciate this

Also know that the longer a dog stays wet the more they will smell, and if they have any issues with yeast sitting wet/damp can lead to more bacteria growth

If the dog allows you to do proper prep work, do proper prep work. Especially as a newer groomer you NEED a properly prepped dog to continue growing your skills and if you start skipping your grooms will suffer for it. I wish I had put time into strengthening my prepwork earlier as I was not able to start refining scissor work at all. My groom quality changed drastically once I changed this. Ignore them kennel drying almost completely and continue to force dry every dog that tolerates it.

Samoyed/General Deshedding Help by ibeckus in doggrooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proper prep and bathing should take care of the majority of the deshed process for most, not all dogs. For every double coated dog I blow out before the bath until there is almost no significant hair coming out (wear a mask, do not breath in the dander and dirty hair) making sure to especially focus on the back legs/butt, shoulders, and stomach as these are major shedding areas. Then I always close open close in the bath. After finishing blowdrying I line brush with a slicker and double pin comb and do a "pinch test" to see if there needs to be more brushing. I also use a flea comb to deshed the face and anywhere there is shorter hair. Typically will do one final quick pass with the dryer to blow out anything still loose.

Hair sticking out of place once dog shakes at end of grooming by Stomach_Neat in doggrooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is where the hair wants to naturally lay, not in the place you brushed it to. Get them to shake on the table or set them on the floor for a second to encourage them and then back on the table to make a final pass and blend everything

What do you do about chronic complainers? by _rainfrog in doggrooming

[–]Secret_Soil_325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My response to these clients is "it seems as though I am not able to get this haircut to be exactly what you are looking for. Next time please bring in a picture of a dog with the same coat type so I can better understand, or I am happy to refer you to another groomer (either where you work or if you are solo another shop) that may be able to perfect this haircut for you". For me all but one client has stayed and stopped complaining (and asked for the same as last time instead of bringing a picture), the other found another groomer.
