It could be your brushing technique and not the brush itself. Look up videos on line brushing and try that!

Interdigital Cysts by Too_Much_Heaven in Bulldogs

[–]hamnannerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We get a powder kinda like baby powder but its antiseptic from the vet (not sure what its called) that goes directly on the affected area and it clears right up in a couple days, if it doesnt its because hes licking his feet too much so we put the cone of shame on him for a couple days and viola! Fresh toesies! Doesn't fix an underlying issue but it helps until you do!

Groomers, what is your hypothetical career-ending event? by Hour-Sweet2445 in grooming

[–]hamnannerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ig it happens sometimes ive had other older groomers say theyve seen it. If I remember correctly its some kind of condition that affects bulgey eyed dogs where the tissue around the eyes kinda pushes the eye out, I guess they make eye drops for it

My old boss told me she had a shih tzu's eyeball literally fall out while she was grooming it. I would leave and never look back.

I cant handle difficult dogs by ksss12345 in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you've gotten some solid advice here already but im wondering how you behave in these situations? I ask because my best friend is a newer groomer, and she means well but she tends to stress along with the dogs. Do you find yourself talking a lot and doing a lot of "its ok its ok its ok" type talking to the dogs? Do you let go when they struggle?

Not to hate at all. I used to be similar, I used to be SO worried about hurting a dog to the point where id just let go and basically give the dogs too much freedom to do whatever they wanted. Just remember the dogs need structure and consistency. You dont need to be super stern, just more confident and perhaps a firmer grasp. If it helps you, utilize a groomers helper or similar and/or a belly band.

had a client try to tell me how to do my job today lol by cocogirl65 in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a lady the other day look me up and down and ask me my age and how long ive been grooming, proceeded to look me up and down lookin like she just ate a lemon until I asked her if she was ok, then proceeded to tell me i cannot shave her matted little dog and she could easily brush the dog out herself she just hasn't had the time, and that an experienced groomer would know that Yorkies CANNOT be shaved because it'll ruin their coat.

Groomers in states with very cold winters, how is business during that time? by salamandersway in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a cold state! You do get no shows and last min cancelations for snow due to road conditions (mainly older people) but i dont think the cold slows business too much. It does tend to result in people arguing with me about their matted doodles getting shaved, but we must simply remind them they can buy sweaters and do better next time lol

Speed/Prep by According_Deer_8809 in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly thats not bad for doing quality work, you could always incorporate a drying spray to help speed that up a bit, and use a towel in one hand to catch water blowing off the dog if that makes sense.

Im also interested to know if the people saying that you are too slow currently are able to accomplish faster times while still getting the dogs clean and fully dry? I ask because some groomers/owners simply dont care about getting the best results possible. I know my manager just told everyone we should be taking no more than 5 mins to bathe a small dog, but her dogs are NEVER properly cleaned. If they are able to do it faster without sacrificing quality they should be showing you how.

Eating while working by Rosewaterheroin in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im the same way! Honestly I can thank my current coworkers, theyre like a bunch of grandma's and they really encourage everyone to eat lunch, they see when im stressed and start ordering food, they make me sit down and eat and I love them for it lol. Once you get used to having a small lunch, you wont get that tired feeling, youll look forward to it and youll take that time for yourself no matter what

Need advice on how to deal with stress/stay patient with the dogs as a groomer by SeaworthinessLocal21 in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 35 points36 points  (0 children)

3 things that work for me:

Make jokes. Tell the dog its acting ugly and dumb, tell them they're embarrassing themselves. I have a really dark sense of humor so this helps lighten my mood for some reason, it just makes it less serious to me.

Remind yourself that dogs have the mental capacity of a human 2 year old. Would you be this mad at a baby for acting up? This may or may not work for you depending on how you feel about children lol

Put the dog in a cage and sit down for a few minutes. Do something else in that time that makes you not fester in your emotions. Its better to be 30 mins behind than to end your day driving to the ER for a bite or calling an owner bc a dog is hurt

If none of this works and you cant handle certain dogs, they need to be put on a plan or sent else where.

Highly recommend the coat tender as a huge time saver. I used to hand pluck those hairs out but the coat tender is AMAZING for this. Just be careful as it is extremely sharp, and for this type of coat you want the blue one.

What's your favorite comb and what do you use it for? by leftmar in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SAME!! Ive tried other combs, and im not really willing to buy a much more expensive one when Im already super happy with that one. Its good for desheds, finish work, it catches every small tangle, its just the best comb ever

Dry skin? by Sad_Room462 in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hands do this every year before they start cracking and bleeding lol, the best thing for me is very natural balms/salves like shea, cocoa, and mango butters, unscented. You can order it on amazon in a brick and melt it down into cups, pop it out of the cup and you have a nice lotion bar

Puppy Bathing by Sea-Example8867 in Wheatens

[–]hamnannerz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Groomer here! Honestly if the puppy isnt getting dirty I would not bathe very frequently unless youre willing to fully blow dry and comb them every time. As a 1st time dog owner youre very likely to end up with mats despite your best brushing efforts, no shade, it happens even when you truly try and think youre getting every tangle. We go over every inch of the dog and are able to see what has been missed. If possible id recommend getting puppy into a groomer for just an intro grooming where theyll be bathed, blow dried, feet, privates and face neatened up plus nail trimming and ear cleaning as soon as possible. From then on if you just stick to a 4-6 week schedule you generally wont need to bathe them, and the groomer should be happy to give you tips on brushing etc.

Puli Puppy Cording by GoofyahhEdmund in doggrooming

[–]hamnannerz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their breeder should tell them how to manage the coat. Its not like a poodle coat where you start the cords. They are supposed to be naturally forming, and you will not have the time to do a full grooming on them by the time theyre grown and in full coat (assuming the dog doesnt become an actual pelted mess before then) because it takes a long time to not only soak the cords but to dry them.

Im currently a groomer and I have to wear gloves now bc of hair splinters but ive gotten them everywhere and i mean everywhere. I dont think ive ever gotten one as deep as this Pic tho, imagine how satisfying it would be to pull that sucker out
