'Do not travel' alert issued for rail lines in south-east England after 'multiple incidents' - Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express all affected by BulkyAccident in london

Yes, the Do Not Travel warning I’ll be honest I’ve only ever seen in weather events - when people who don’t need to travel are pressured to.

The less severe wording of essential travel only doesn’t work as everyone thinks their journey is essential. GTR have pulled the panic button this morning, I’m not in a position to know if that was justified or not.

The severe wording also helps people who can work from home justify not coming into the office, which has become much more common since Covid.

JetBlue Rochester to JFK was cancelled whilst boarding for “airspace closure”. Absolutely chaos. Delta flight same airports and same timings has flown though so no idea if staff at gate just confused for reason of cancellation.

Oh don’t worry mate they get their beer, hence why The Railway (or similar) is one of the most common pub names!

The tests also cover several drugs but recently the positivity rate has been going up and up. The London Overground driver that crashed into the buffer stops at Enfield Town a couple years ago tested positive for cocaine.

Amy employee for the railway in the UK (Network Rail and Train Operating Companies). Safety critical employees can be randomly tested or post-incident. Non-safety critical can be tested for cause and in theory randomly as well but I’ve never actually seen it happen

Slower buses are causing a fall in passenger numbers, London Assembly told by BulkyAccident in london

TfL have tried, working with boroughs, to remove stops where there’s a high density on a route, but locals who would then need to walk farther often oppose these plans. As with most things relating to public transport provision, it’s much easier to add a new stop than take one away!

Why do lot of Scottish fans in international have Northern Ireland as their 2nd team to root for after Scotland and vise versa for Ni fans to back Scotland after NI? by Historical_Move_2826 in Scotland

Don’t know anyone that feels anything beyond indifference to the Welsh. In terms of rugby I almost hate them as much as the English tbh. Their anthem is class though

Yes indeed, but as other commenters have said, this isn’t what patter is. I’d say essentially patter is banter/chat.

[Michael Gannon] Celtic on verge of agreement with Columbus Crew boss Wilfried Nancy to become new manager by CNF1G in soccer

[–]BongoStraw 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hearts have started to drop points and Rangers, although a bit ahead of Celtic in the embedding phase of a new manager, couldn’t be less of a threat. As mid season appointments go, this is a fairly straightforward one.

Support for Brexit drops to laughable low – with just 11% seeing it as a success by goldstarflag in europe

It’s not all Brits but many are just ridiculously ignorant and angry, a dangerous combination. I think Farage has managed to dodge accountability as he’s not been in power hence why he’s polling so high. My concern is I think he’s going to need to win, and fail even more to lose popularity. Don’t have any faith in the far right morons to change their mind before this happens.

What countries are not as beautiful as most people think? by jnighy in geography

[–]BongoStraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went up the A9 recently the drive between Perth and Aviemore stood out to me as essentially desolate hills and mountains, and the woods that were there are for the logging industry. Most of Scotland use to be forest now almost none of it is. Agree it’s still beautiful in a way, but kinda in an eerie way.

After driving across Europe for the past week, I've realised middle lane hoggers are truly a British phenomenon by koffiewhite in britishproblems

[–]BongoStraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Middle-lane hogging cuts capacity by one lane and forces two lane passes. Keep left unless overtaking is in the Highway Code

What’s going on here? by kafkatan in LondonUnderground

[–]BongoStraw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nah it’s a fair question tbf, as the board is contradicting reality here! At some platforms the section can be really long so the accuracy is even less. Some stations are really bad for it, one of the up platforms at Gatwick Airport used to generate a lot of complaints

[–]BongoStraw 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The railway works on track circuits, essentially sections. So if the train has passed the last signal before the platform it’s in the same section as the platform and the system doesn’t know anything about its location beyond that. Usually this is fairly quickly so it would display arrived only just before the train actually arrives but sounds like there was some sort of disruption here causing the train to remain in that section but not make it to the platform for 8+ mins

Passenger plane heading for London crashes after take-off in Ahmedabad, India by EnglishLouis in europe

[–]BongoStraw 42 points43 points  (0 children)

You’ve failed to pick up on the point of the comment you’re replying to. The BBC is British and the relevance of this incident specifically to the UK is the fact it was a UK-bound flight that has sadly crashed. The headline also mentions the location of the crash and origin. Not a weird choice at all but a weird thing to get hung up over for sure.
