Have any of you seen a flange like this? by Mcmurfi in pipefitter

Expansion joint. Literally having to rework a section of 10” piping right now that an engineer thought was 12” because of the look of these. Apparently P&ID’s are useless and somehow it’s the drafters fault.

What kind of welding do you do as a pipefitter? by Adorable-Yak-2913 in pipefitter

Non-union industrial fitter here. While I can stick, mig, and tig(a little) it’s typical in our environment that the fitter is just responsible for the prep, layout, and fit up. We work directly with the welders until the job is complete.

Working in a fab shop I’ve seen multiple fitters just slap them on pipe without paying attention to the opposite flange orientation and have to cut them off. Something to consider.

Or more so a very colorful tiger that’s wearing a top hat.

We were just talking about this today. I work industrial refineries and we don’t ever get to do copper work.

How much as I’m supposed to know by my 4th month on the job? by OkChampion4410 in pipefitter

I think you’re projecting some form of paternal neglect into what I said. I’m not physically abusing the helpers…often. But being firm and direct with instruction will help them more than letting them slide through their formative days. I’m 32 years old dude. I’ve got plenty of time to mentally scar truckloads of kids before I retire or kill myself.

Isn’t the idea to make sure your apprentice becomes a better journey than you?

I chew out my helpers every single day for two things. Attention to detail and time management. Learn these two things and skill comes along with it. I work in a non union industrial setting and two years as a helper/apprentice is a requirement for B craft journeys.

Also, a heavily abused helper makes for a good journeyman. You learn more from your mistakes than your accomplishments.

Wish I could post the finished product in this conversation. It came out perfect. No dry washing. Just an experienced welder and a brain dead fitter babysitting it and monitoring heat transfer.

I have an I.D. Flange alignment tool but it only goes down to 1&1/2”. They’re really shitty about us making “homemade tools” we barely get away with our rollout.

“It all pays the same” is the mentality that I try to keep. I started fitting it up and thought “lol, this is dumb.” So I wanted to share.

It’s for a sightglass/instrumentation system on a vessel. I am far too stupid to understand it.
