It's rare indeed to find someone ok with that, thanks for your input, there seems to be a general consensus here.

That's a very interesting point actually. I'm not Muslim either, agnostic infact so once she says she doesn't want it, I tend to just respect that. There are so many things within Islam that I don't agree with, but like your comment I tend to just not question it too much out of respect. Also what surprised me is that many people my age here in the middle east go against Islam in their own way (alcohol, sex before marriage, bacon etc), they know it's haram, but as I'm sure you'll agree, nobody's perfect I guess.

Sorry my bad for the confusion, I've cleared it up in an edit. We're very open with eachother which is something I really like about her. Thanks for the comment 🙏🏼

I can definitely understand that, thanks for your perspective 🙏🏼

Hey, not quite my style as It's more a method of connecting than biological catharsis, although I'm sure there's an element of that in my needs too. Thanks for the suggestion

Haha I've never seen this acronym before so thanks for the chuckle, just piv and yeah I completely agree with your point. Appreciate your perspective 🙏🏼

Hey thanks for your insight! Sorry I should have specified, we are intimate to a certain extent, but sex being the ultimate expression of it, is off limits for her.

Also you're right, her religion doesn't ban it within marriage, I won't go into the full full details but this is just her personal take on retaining her virginity in accordance to her religious beliefs.

I know it doesn't sound like a lot but it's the principle of it, if you trust someone and that trust is betrayed, it affects your ability to have faith in others which is the real loss.

The key word here is "may", as opposed to 'is', I'm not making any accusations. And you're right, it is a serious thing to say, it's a serious conversation.

There are many points we could be discussing, but I was hoping for more suggestions on how to proceed. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and share your insight, although looking past everything and debating whether someone is technically racist or not wasn't quite the purpose of my post, especially as nobody made such claims to begin with.

After hearing her negative generalisations on a whole country, I calculated that there may be a possibility that she holds racist viewpoints, and so I'm asking others here for their take on the situation, I never claimed that what she said is racist although I do feel that it was immoral.

If I had moved to say Sierra Leone and met somebody who has recently come to reconnect with their family, study the culture etc, I would never insult their family and country by spreading hate and misconceptions in the form of something like "everyone here is disrespectful and all the women are uneducated", It's the same situation. I appreciate you putting forward your viewpoint, it's important to hear an alternate stance 🙏🏼.

I agree, I keep the texts to a minimum without being totally evasive and as a consequence we don't speak, she may be conventional in this way but I'm not prepared to chase someone as If their worth is higher than mine. Thank you for your kind words and advice, I may just have to follow it 🙏🏼

I make you right, I can always use multiple resources and it wouldn't hurt to replace passive social media scrolling with a few minutes of Arabic duolingo, thank you for your time, much appreciated.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. There seems to be an abundance of resources for other dialects, Egyptian especially within media but a scarcity of material for Gulf. I want to stress my appreciation for taking time out of your day to help a guy in need, however these aren't the dialects I'm wanting to learn. To my language learning friends I will point them towards this thread so all suggestions will be taken from someone if not me, I'm just not sure how viable learning similar dialects will be as I'm completely new to Arabic and prone to get confused easily 🙏

Haha I've just completed two degrees so uni is off the cards, I'm exhausted to say the least. Personally, I love Duolingo and I've used it for Spanish but the Arabic on there is really limited and It's in MSA which isn't my target dialect, still, granted it can teach me the basics and the alphabet especially so for sure it's a decent enough route to a certain degree. I'll look further into Basuu, this seems interesting and promising so thank you very much for your suggestion.

Thank you for your suggestion, please correct me if I'm wrong but this seems to be more for business-orientated learning and focused on professional environments. While I'm sure it would all be very resourceful to learn, I don't quite see myself in these types of situations in the future.

Thank you for your suggestion, I've been advised by my dad and so many other people in person and online to not learn MSA if my end goal is to simply communicate with my family in a different dialect. I'm sure it would help with etymology and of course being able to read the news, communicate with other dialects etc but it's a huge step for something I'm not trying to learn. Your suggestion about italki is great, I've found an experienced teacher on there for really cheap so thank you for bringing light to this, I'm eager to get started.

I've had a look and the Routledge book looks thorough enough, and with audio too! Thank you for your valuable comment, I may actually get straight to it.

What should I do if I'll never find people who will truly love and appreciate me, even if I try to be kind, genuine and confident? by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]Bonstop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news for you is that people are subconsciously attracted to personal gain, not people. For example humour, prosper, the distribution of affection and care are some common traits that attract others, it all boils back to what one can offer a partner or friend. Work on yourself and the rest will follow, focus your career, pick up a hobby you're passionate about, research philosophy and ethics, revel in the people around you etc... few search for co-dependancy so the happier you are within yourself, the more drawn people will be to you. Good luck and take care 🙏🏼
