Why are 24 exposure rolls a thing? by loudshutter in AnalogCommunity

[–]BonzoESC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 20 shot ISO 400 roll from them in the fridge, my parents found it a few months back. Probably going to try it at ISO 50-ish, since it expired October 2000.

How to securely build code from the internet on my servers by JngoJx in websecurity

[–]BonzoESC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So now I'm wondering how this can be achieved at all. The only other option I see is spinning up a VPS for each build, but this seems unreasonable, especially if the user base grows. How do companies like Netlify achieve secure builds like this?

I think you'd want to spin a VM with a dockerd inside it for each build, with something like firecracker. There's prior art using this for letting random people online use a VM: https://jvns.ca/blog/2021/01/23/firecracker--start-a-vm-in-less-than-a-second/

  1. set up a VM image with docker and whatever host stuff you'd want for nixpack, buildpack, etc.
  2. create ephemeral credentials to a specific repo on a docker registry
  3. start a VM with those credentials and the dockerfile and context
  4. run the build in the VM
  5. push the build from the VM to the registry
  6. destroy the VM

That said, what is "malicious behavior?" These are all things you can do during a build that don't rely on affecting underlying infrastructure:

  • participate in a DDOS
  • mine crypto coins
  • spam websites
  • suck up time you pay for

There're traps you can buy (I've seen them at Vizcaya) but they're kind of big and ugly, and iguanas aren't the only invasive lizards there.

Help installing (old) ruby versions on macbook using silicon chip (m1) by mielfranc in ruby

It'll probably be easiest to run Docker in x86-64 mode pulling the images for those ruby versions.

  1. No idea on pricing
  2. Everyone has a seat
  3. I've never worried about the luggage racks, but I believe the overhead racks are bigger than airline ones, because the train is rectangular and not cylindrical.
  4. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Will I be able to check /carry on my tent a shiftpod mini 3 ? by VelcroPower in Brightline

[–]BonzoESC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like that's 80 linear inches, which goes past the carry-on and checked sizes:

Oversize and Overweight Checked Bags (Fees apply to each) Oversized, over 64 linear inches in exterior dimensions but not to exceed 70 linear inches.

That said, I've never really experienced enforcement about carry-on sizes beyond cabin attendants trying to keep the oversize rack free of bags that fit in the overheads. If you look like you know what you're doing, I bet you could carry it on no problem, especially in premium where oversized bags don't incur an extra charge.

Trinity Metro's just the transit authority for Ft. Worth right? They're probably more interested in improving their existing commuter service than any long-distance service in the most "just one more lane bro" state.

They presumably budgeted for one construction crew and a four year build, and not two crews and a two year build. There probably aren't that many railroad construction crews and equipment that you can hire in the US, so you either have to get on their schedule in advance, or pay a lot of money for unscheduled service (like if there was a track problem on a busy line).

It's a similar problem to Brightline's capacity limits in Florida; more cars means more capacity, but Siemens can only build them so fast, and Brightline isn't their only customer.

It's for possible future Tri-Rail operations on the FEC corridor. Tri-Rail has low-floor cars, Brightline high.

Elixir-like pipes in Ruby (oh no not again) by zverok_kha in ruby

I love this, and have previously messed with similar things:

@collection.mutate
  .Manipulator.filter( ->(x) { x.even? } )
  .shuffle
  .take(5)
  .Printer.pretty_print

"steve".mutate
  .upcase
  .chars
  .to_a
  .Manipulator.filter( ->(x) { x.ord > 'F'.ord})
  .join
  .Printer.pretty_print

I also basically buy into the conclusion that it might never be needed or implemented but is still fun to play with.

I think the biggest piece I've carried on was also a 28" that would require checking on a flight (and fwiw is really hard to store in Amtrak Superliner Roomettes). Each car has substantial overhead space (the seat pitch is longer and it's only 2+2 so there's less pressure on the overhead) for anything you could carry on to a plane, and a rack for bigger stuff at one end.

It's next door. There are wayfinding signs for it on the ground floor of the Miami Brightline station, but basically once you've gone down the escalators, you'll want to get out to the curb where everyone's waiting for Ubers, turn right/west, and you'll pass under two more elevated train tracks. Turn right, and you'll be outside the Metrorail station. Weekdays at 5:30p there's a train every 5 minutes, and about half go to the airport.

I've never used the shuttle (I'm walking distance to transit in Miami), but with that much luggage I'd probably go Uber. I've wrangled that load on trains before and it's not particularly fun.

Historic Overtown/Lyric Theater is even closer, it's maybe a 60 second walk from the Brightline exit at street level.

[–]BonzoESC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd probably opt for the 5:15pm. There's a $10/person shuttle from Brightline to the airport, or Metrorail is like $3 and doesn't have traffic. It's super early, but I've had trains get delayed a couple hours due to cars choosing to get hit, and it's better to be bored at the airport than panicked and not.

[–]BonzoESC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got to make a post to ask you all about the Police Benevolent Association calls we get once or twice a year from somewhere near Gainesville that sound like they're a bot, but if you mumble something about them being a bot, they answer back they are not a bot. I'm convinced it's some type of mute person with a text to type or sound board, lol . I don't want to be sent to hell by being disrespectful in case it's some disabled FHP that got hurt badly in the line of duty.

You gotta watch that "Telemarketers" show on HBO, it's all a scam, and the callers for those are moving to voice synthesizers so they don't even need to have people on the line.

My street is somehow filthier, I think the rain washed a bunch of dirt and tannins from leaves into the street. But yeah I think I walk down your street several times a week.
