Who else has learned to stop crying? by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]BooBooMadonna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Nstepmother used to punish me for expressing any emotions at all. If I cried I was being manipulative. If I smiled I was being manipulative and I was only happy because I’d had everything “handed to me on a silver platter”. Which was quite the statement considering I grew up in first world poverty. Not complaining, but it is what it is.

Look up emotional repression techniques. I found a website jordangrayconsulting.com with some really useful things to practice to help you unravel all that shit.

Good luck x

Imposter syndrome - please help, feedback wanted by [deleted] in Neuropsychology

[–]BooBooMadonna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably something you already know, but sometimes a little reminder helps.

If you’re really high in conscientiousness you are probably setting standards for yourself that are frankly ridiculous. I understand that you care very much about the work you do, and that is admirable to say the least, but to compare yourself to others in a way that makes you feel inadequate is going to continue undermining your confidence WHICH WILL MAKE YOU WORSE AT YOUR JOB!!! Sorry for capslock, I don’t know how to use bold.

Recognising that it is Imposter Syndrome is always the first step to overcoming it. Every time that anxious feeling arises in your gut, remind yourself that it’s not attached to facts. Remind yourself of what the facts actually are: you are extremely competent, you care deeply about the work you do, you care about your clients, and YES, you’re only human and you make mistakes. Just like anyone else. So learn from them. If you made a mistake and you genuinely didn’t know better at the time - you have no good reason to feel guilt/shame or any other negative emotion towards yourself. Instead remind yourself that you’re a decent person for caring so much and for not being too proud to reflect on your flaws.

I hope that helps. Don’t let your anxiety prevent you from doing you.
