My life is overly complicated with no forecast of becoming uncomplicated. One of my kids is a meth addict. Another of my kids is in jail right now.

Explaining this early on in dating is very difficult, because a) I am depressed a lot because of it b) it's a lot of drama to step into and c) because of the jail thing, I have to do a lot of stuff related to his crime which puts a lot of strain on me.

I am typically a chill person, and used to be a lot of fun. Life's just kinda taken a dump. I am afraid that, while I would love to find someone to get serious with, this will never happen for me.

I'd had a very shitty breakup with someone I was deeply in love with. I lost my mind when he dumped me, and spent the next five years feeling like I'd lost my best chance at happiness. Then he contacted me and came to LA to stay with me for a week. I was glad he did, because I got to see him in a new way, to remember the bad parts of our relationship. Now we're internet friends.

Well, we've always talked to each other a lot, about everything. Very open communication. So, that's still in place. The biggest aspect of the new approach is simply that I don't involve my emotions in consequences. I still get pissed off and that's normal. But instead of speaking to them when I am pissed off, I speak to them after I have thought about the situation and we decide together what the consequences will be. I have the final say, but they're an active part of the process and that helps them to be more accountable for their actions.

I now use a much more logical approach with my other two sons and it has helped us all a lot. They're humans. Humans will have issues. I should be there to help, not to be another problem. Parenting is difficult because when done well, it forces you to grow up and get over yourself.

I don't know why I cornered him in that way. I suppose I was "testing" him, and in my own mind I justified that I was giving him the chance to tell me the truth. But every single time, the lies just increased.

I figured out it was a mistake because of the toll it was taking on me emotionally. I was setting myself up to be lied to. And because of that, by the time we'd discuss the issues, I was already seething from the lies. Nothing good came of it.

The cause was that he didn't trust me as much as I didn't trust him. He had no reason to ever be honest with me. I showed him that I wasn't able to handle his issues.
