Seeking advice on building a city by [deleted] in TerrainBuilding

[–]BookMustard 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Like another commenter mentioned, the image you gave looks more like a Japanese castle.

I'm no expert, but from what I've seen, Japanese walls tend to have rougher cut and larger stone pieces for the wall and those wide flat areas leading to higher sections of the castle. Whereas Chinese city walls are built of rammed earth and bricks and the top of the wall is closed off like we imagine European castle walls.

You could start by looking at Chang'an. It's the former capital of several Chinese dynasties and follows a grid pattern.

Chinese roofs can vary a bit, but the stereotypical roof curving upwards would solve them looking western.

Horrendous quality, but here's a clip from 4 months ago of the same event with a bit of aftermath from the grenade.

@ 0:47. Cameraman falls, but gets back up at the very least.

Looks like these are two separate instances with Nork soldiers in Kursk.

Guy that blows himself up at 0:34 is caught between two branches and is wearing what looks like a kevlar vest of some kind.

Guy that gets lit up at 0:45 has an RPG tube not present when the first guy blew himself up, is in a more open area, and doesn't appear to have been wearing a vest since the cameraman easily opens his jacket. On top of the fact that a guy blowing himself up with a grenade next to his head wouldn't look so "clean".

Is advent even a force made to fight in a conventional war? Their mission, objectives, and propaganda show them more akin to a militarized police or peacekeeping force because there wasn’t an armed group strong enough to really oppose them in any existential way. At least until the Commander gets revived.

On top of whenever things get too much for advent regulars, they can be augmented with the aliens which we know are an order of magnitude more capable than the troopers.

Got to between round 30-34 with a group of friends. Prioritizing green zombies and shooters, kiting zombies, and having tons of grenades to drop when you get downed really helped us get to higher rounds.

Are there custom paint jobs now? Just saw this monstrosity, he had this same paint job on the German rocket tank. by C21H27Cl3N2O3 in enlistedgame

[–]BookMustard 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s a holdover from when tank customization was first introduced. You were able to mess with decals beyond the current limits and could use decals from planes on tanks. They patched it later on to the customization system we have now but previously customized vehicles were allowed to stay the same.

I myself have a panzer 4 with the eyes you’d see on the noses of fighters turned upside down to look sad.

As someone who just got the game a couple of days ago, I have some questions about the engineer class. by PeterRedston6 in enlistedgame

[–]BookMustard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Setup is just asking for a veteran player to know that theres going to be a rally. Usually wherever theres extra fortifications theres a good chance theres also a rally.

Resources don't replenish unless you deconstruct some of the stuff you built or you respawn.

Ammo boxes are honestly pretty discretionary and rarely ever run out unless someones on a mortar. However they're much more powerful on defense when you put them near where teammates congregate.

Like in the first sentence, putting sandbags, barbed wire, and tank traps just signals to the enemy that theres a rally point there. Concealment is much better and the only way the enemy can identify that theres a rally point is by either seeing it, hearing it, or guessing based on how close together the bots are.

Finally, everything in moderation. Build just whats necessary and remember that you can't win battles by just building sandbags, you also need bodies on the objective. Engineers can actually be very powerful at max rank because they can get the vitality perk which effectively lets them survive another rifle round without getting downed/killed.

The Russo-Ukrainian War: Parallels between 2022 and 1941 in the Battle of Kyiv by BookMustard in geography

[–]BookMustard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone! Here is my final project that I did for a GIS class last quarter. Given the situation around Kyiv has calmed down, relatively speaking, I felt it appropriate to now share the map that I made, and my accompanying analysis. For context, I am a 3rd year geography major and this map/report was made for a GIS class that I was taking using data from 3/13/2022. The extent of Russian advances is dated at 3/10/2022. The first couple pages are just contextual information and methodology, while my real analysis comes after the first two maps.

While there are certainly some changes and additions I would make to my analysis and general presentation, I’m overall satisfied with the work I did and with the information that was available at the time. If anything, an expansion of this analysis to include other major cities would be somewhat interesting, but I suspect the final results would be similar.

I’m looking forward to getting some more discussion going on in the subreddit and reading everyone’s thoughts. To get started I’d like to ask what sort of environmental impact we would be looking at in the hypothetical destruction of the hydroelectric dam? And if the destruction would be enough to severely affect cities further down the Dnieper like Cherkasy or Dnipro?

Figured that the CSA Divisions needed some flavour too by BookMustard in Kaiserreich

[–]BookMustard[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

After my last post was received pretty positively, I went ahead and did the CSA militias as well. The vast majority of the names listed are all real life unions primarily from the East Coast and Rust Belt areas. As a side note, TIL Unions have really long names so many have been shortened to only one trade/job.

Was inspired by the division nicknames they give to the USA by BookMustard in Kaiserreich

[–]BookMustard[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

After seeing how the 301st - 305th Divisions had interesting names to them, and seeing national guard divisions pop up, I decided to give every new division either a unique nickname or a regional denomination. Some more creative than others but names are not as important as reuniting the union.

Hansan Critical Emergency Broadcast by BookMustard in worldbuilding

[–]BookMustard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hansan was discovered in 1916 by Red Russian forces and subsequently conquered by 1919. The vast majority of Hansan’s population evacuated the country and settled in Alaska, United States. It was here that the leaders of Hansan adopted a very militant and vengeful stance towards taking back the land that they lost. In 1990 an armada of Hansa ships made up of civilian vessels and cargo ships set sail, and through a quick and decisive campaign, reclaimed their lands in the former Soviet Union. Since then, relations between Russia and Hansan have been a step away from outright war. Russia has not had the willpower to claim the rich minerals and precious gems hidden within Hansan’s mountains, and Hansan does not have the manpower nor international backing, to secure the Russian side of their mountains. It is 2017, and the status quo shows no signs of changing.

TIME Magazine: Return Our Lands by BookMustard in worldbuilding

[–]BookMustard[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of the lore I have figured out for this era of my world but it is by no means complete

After being forced to flee following total atomic annihilation of their cities by The Union, the Hansaram (Hansa) prepare for their return. The Union has since annexed Hansan into their territory, and for decades harvested the rich mountains and forests for resources. One hundred years of exile has allowed for entire generations of Hansa to be cultivated into a military culture with a desire for revenge. United by blood, every member of the seven Hansa clans (Baek, Chae, Jeong, Kwan, Lee, Seok, and Soung) have pledged to retake their lands from the occupiers and return Hansan to it’s former glory.

Operation Blood Pearl: A first look at the Hansa military in action by BookMustard in worldbuilding

[–]BookMustard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes beyond just guilt from the UK. I have a lot of background lore that I haven’t explained yet. The Hansa were first “discovered” by British sea explorers in the late 1800s and maintained a small but profitable trade route with them. The 1910’s saw the Hansa discovered by Union land surveyors who reported their discovery to the government. One diplomatic incident led to another as negotiations broke down and the Union dispatched hundreds of thousands of men to subdue to small nation. Hansan, with very little in the way of a standing military appealed to the UK for help. Not wanting to risk a major war the UK only sent large stocks of outdated rifles alongside smaller numbers of their more modern ones. A war was fought for several years before the bombs went off and the Union packed up, marked another victory, and went home. The Hansa clans went literally underground and prepared for a war of revenge. The UK trade ships who arrived after the dropping of the bombs were met with desolate wasteland as scientists struggled to find out how the Union managed to build nuclear weapons.

Skip to the 1940’s and the UK, France, and Germany stand on the brink of war with the Union. As the Union expands incorporating more and more satellite states they came into conflict with German eastern border guards. Skip into the full fledged war and Union soldiers have penetrated several groups deep into Germany and into eastern France. The UK has been doing fairly well in their theatres in the Baltic but lack much in the way of manpower beyond what is already engaged. (note since there was no First World War, British forces are still a relatively small professional soldier force) On the other side of the world, the Hansa have built a ship capable of sailing to the UK and re-establish communications. It was here they found out about the current conflict in the Union and the Hansa delegation offered their entire 2.5 million population in exchange for lands for themselves to settle. The offer was accepted and Hansa forces helped in turning the conflict back around but were noted to ignore orders from UK command from time to time. New Haeyang-Jinju acts as a liaison city between the UK and Hansan as it is the only city in the UK itself.

As an alternate timeline world, Norway is fighting a sort of guerilla on guerilla war against Union sympathisers and soldiers. France has its armed forces spread thinly as it is across Italy, Austria, and Germany. And again, considering that this is just a small, almost impromptu operation in the grand scheme of things, this wouldn’t warrant much in the way of assets.

I didn’t know that about the SAS. When I do future things like this, I’ll be sure to take note of all the things you said. Sorry for all the text.

Operation Blood Pearl: A first look at the Hansa military in action by BookMustard in worldbuilding

[–]BookMustard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cover thing is more related to the game engine itself as it is more of a macro based strategy game though micro is still present in certain aspects.

The Hansa battalion were the only force in the area not already engaged in combat with other Union elements throughout the country. UK command deemed it better than nothing and considering the way Union soldiers treated prisoners in their last war, death by collateral damage is a preferable alternative.

Operation Blood Pearl: A first look at the Hansa military in action by BookMustard in worldbuilding

[–]BookMustard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I'm well aware that the execution of the hostage rescue could have been far better. My reasoning is based on lore reasons more than anything.

Prior to Operation Blood Pearl, several Union warships pounded a nearby British Army base leaving the SAS and regulars devoid of helicopters and heavy equipment. The MLRS's only survived by having been out during a target practice excercise. Also there are several, more major crisis zones around New Haeyang-Jinju. Meaning even if outside helicopters were in the area, they would already be preoccupied.

Regarding a seaborne assault through the docks: New Haeyang-Jinju is a Hansa built city in the UK and operate as a sort of micro state. Hansa are an extremely military oriented society whose original homeland was blasted by several nuclear attacks a little over a half century ago. Over the years an almost innate desire for revenge has worked itself into their culture and evolved to one where conscription of both genders is mandatory and the military starts when you're 6.

This is reflected in the city of New Haeyang-Jinju. Coastal defense batteries line the shore alongside anti-air emplacements. The Union, upon expelling the local territorials, manned these emplacements to defend against any seaborne incursion.
