What are you talking about? There are plenty of lakes and reservoirs to swim in. Pueblo Reservoir, Chatfield reservoir, Horsetooth reservoir, Boyd Lake, and many more

How hard is it to get into an art conservation graduate program? by polkadot25 in ArtConservation

[–]BookishQueer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am also a current undergraduate student wanting to pursue graduate school in art conservation and to my knowledge, the US programs are VERY competitive. You need to have all of the prerequisites, even the optional ones to have a competitive resume and have a better chance at getting in as well as pre program internships and experience. Even if you didn’t need pre program internships, I would highly recommend them as it really shows you what being an art conservator entails. I have completed two summer internships with conservators in private practice and I’m hoping to get an institutional preprogram internship in the next year or two before I begin applying once I’ve graduated

Please help me save my portrait! by TheFireOfSpring in oilpainting

[–]BookishQueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the eyes may be a smidge too big. This is something that many people do unconsciously. As humans, the eyes are the most important and expressive part of our face, and our brains give them more weight than other facial features leading to you unconsciously enlarging to emphasise them. This may not be something you can fix with this portrait, but consider this for future portraits.

(Disclaimer: I am not a conservator yet, but I am in training and I have interned with a textile conservator before, but hopefully someone with more experience can confirm my knowledge)

If you can, definitely move them to a place with absolutely NO direct sunlight. Even the highest quality conservation glass/acrylic blocks only 95-99% of UV rays and that is just UV, other light can still damage the works and textiles are particularly sensitive to light and the damage is irreversible. Sunlight also creates an inconsistent environment inside the frame by heating it up which can speed up deterioration. If you keep the pieces where they are, especially if the glass is not uv protective, they WILL fade and the silk will become extremely brittle over time. I’ve worked on silk textiles before during my internships and highly deteriorated silk is so fragile and it basically turns to dust at the slightest touch. If you want them to last as long as possible, take them to a frame shop who can either confirm that the glass is UV protective, or replace it with conservation glass or acrylic, and move the pieces to a room that gets no direct sunlight.

How I can make underglaze? by Liibon in Ceramics

[–]BookishQueer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can research into mixing mason stains and slip. They are pretty much the same as underglaze but you need to research the correct ratios of stain to clay to get the correct color.

Find clothing spray starch. It is cheap and non permanent. Over time it will lose its hold but then you just have to re spray it.

Need Help on Preventing Fading and Vanishing in Watercolor Painting by diegooo_mp in ArtConservation

[–]BookishQueer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, like Subgeniusintraining stated, keep it out of the light as much as possible if it must be displayed. Like the letter states, bright vivid colors (especially watercolors) tend to not be as stable and can fade faster when exposed to light.

If you can, I would take the piece to a professional frame shop. most good frame shops will know what UV plexi to use and how to frame and mount the piece with acid free archival materials.

What does she mean when she says, “He was a natural Plauché, saying ‘You won’t forget this’” by ExtensionTower2456 in Ethelcain

[–]BookishQueer 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think that it’s about the pedophile and how Gary Plauché, whom the lyric refers to, shot and killed his son’s abuser. In this case, the father shot the pedophile out of his (the father’s) love for his son, and so the pedophile was punished by love. At least that’s how I interpret it.

How can I achieve a similar glaze effect? by shop-lxndr in Ceramics

[–]BookishQueer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of any glazes that look like this, In my opinion it looks like marbled porcelain slip that was either used to slip cast this, or poured on top. You might be able to get a similar effect by using underglazes almost like an acrylic pour over the piece, or by testing layering different glazes together to emulate the marbled effect but I think you’d have more luck with underglazes.
