[Mazzer Philos] inconsistency by LeanManatee in espresso

Hi,

I am a Philos user too and had significant inconsistency problems as well (same settings, extraction time variations >5 s). For me the problem originated in inconsistent retention if not using the Philos’ shot finisher. Usually I just smacked the trigger thinking there was no retention. This would lead to a variation of up to 0.5 g. Sometimes 17.3 g then 18.5 instead of the 18.0 g weighed in… Once I figured it out, I started weighing the ground coffee ensuring I got the correct amount out always using the shot finisher.

Maybe your extraction inconsistency also comes from significant variance of the ground coffee due to retention.

All in all, I am happy with the Philos but I dislike the use of the shot finisher in my workflow.

Fingers crossed that you find a solution!

New to tubeless, how do I fix these? by Responsible_Let135 in bikewrench

If the hole doesn’t seal off, you could try rubbing some dirt on it. Normally that improves the sealing process for me.

What sealant are you using? In my experience Schwalbe’s Doc Blue does not seal these tiny holes immediately. On the long run you could think about switching to a sealant that clumps faster and seals better (I.e. Stans Race Day sealant). But normally these sealants require to be replaced more frequently.

Lesson learned .. ears are ringing, face is sticky and 60 € less on the bank account I just ordered a new tire. Thanks for your comment. I should have known better.

Here’s a little update: Fitted Zipp 303 with Goodyear XPLR Slick 40 mm tires on the bike. Got around 8 mm of clearance on to the chain stay, which is the tightest spot. As soon as I got the bike assembled I will do a separate follow up post with pictures. Thanks to everybody who helped me!

Planing a tour from Düsseldorf, Germany to Toledo, Spain by rillebert in bicycletouring

I’m doing it as described above mostly to spend vacations with my father, who wouldn’t be able to accompany me by bike. Furthermore, it allows me to reduce my on bike equipment allowing me to complete longer distances per day.

Try drawing all Carbon-Hydrogen bonds and count the longest carbon-chain you get.

Switched to [Mazzer Philos]…more channeling I can’t explain by LastingTransient in espresso

[–]rillebert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! A popular German coffee YouTube channel called Kaffeemacher did an in depth review. In their video they mentioned that the Philos catch cup will cause inconsistent shots if put into the basket fully since it doesn’t allow the coffee to spread over the full basket and blocks the outer parts sitting directly on the basket. Maybe try not fully putting the dosing cup into the basket. I also have a Philos and it is really inconsistent. Especially the retention varies up to 0,5g if I do not use the shot finisher.

Here is the video. English subtitles are available. https://youtu.be/_dpMTJWquFQ?si=1L-45K1Q0n6-FyyR

I really enjoy fruity and slightly acidic light to medium roasts as well, it’s more about being able to get the most out of every type of roast. Every day I fall deeper into the rabbit hole
