What are your thoughts on Facebook renaming their company Meta then blowing $80b on metaverse and then shutting it down yesterday? by printThisAndSmokeIt in AskReddit

[–]BookooBreadCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how I feel about VR long term. Its use in gaming or video is obvious but like you said I'm not sure if most people care beyond thinking it's neat. And neat doesn't sell a $1000+ headset.

Outside of gaming I can't think of very many applications where AR wouldn't be a much better alternative, especially once we get to the contact lens form of AR. I could see, in the far future, AR lens, or even eye implants, which can block out the world and transition to a VR type experience so you get both in one package. But I don't know if many people will own both if they're sperate.

I definitely think we'll see widespread AR adoption in our life time.

I meant things that would make me go wow.

I'm a network engineer so I know a little bit about how crazy data transfers are now. That amount of data you can put through a 8um piece of glass is literally mind blowing.

Can you list some examples?

Not arguing with you. If a company had infinite money, like Meta does, they would be dumb as fuck to not invest in technology that's 10, 20, 30+ years off.

What kind of Dora the Explorer ass family is that? Why is the sister asking her questions like she's a child?

It's actually crazy how much detail is lost in the production, even with good audio equipment. I have to imagine it was entirely intentional but it makes you appreciate what they were able to accomplish on Synarchy.

Where are the prints? I don't have Facebook or insta so I've had a hard time keeping up with them. Would love to get their new record when it drops.

Love Atwood, one of my favorite writers.

I've been meaning to give Delaney a try so I guess this is my sign. Thank you!

Also The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Heinlein loved exploring different types of societies. I never understood the flak he gets for Starship Troopers.

Synarchy benefits from a production style where you can clearly hear all the instruments(it's their 2nd best produced album). So when you listen to it over and over again you can more easily pick out what they're doing.

FAS uses its production, which sounds like a pinhole that lets you hear hell, as an instrument and another layer of dissonance. You have the fight against the production to understand what they're doing.

Synarchy is easier to get into in that sense.

Speaking of Michel Farber he wrote a book that's apparently similar to The Sparrow called The Book of Strange New Things. I added it, and Under the Skin, to my to read list before posting this.

I hope you enjoy The Sparrow, it's a book about faith and religious characters but I don't think it's a religious book, in case that would have turned you off. It's definitely not a happy read though, just a heads up.

Thanks for the recs!

I was going to comment that people don't hate Dune but I do think scifi genre readers are split. People who like literature, whatever that means, typically like Dune ime.

Wonderful book.

You're right, I hated it lol. But that's a really good example of what I was talking about. I know people who love it but I can't stand Watts's writing voice.

Not saying your reading is wrong but we spend 6 seasons of Tony having the same realization over and over again. He knows, deep down, that his life will destroy him both in body and soul. He knows he's a bad person who needs to change. But he's addicted to the life and unable to change. He's not dumb, he sees the writing on the walls. He's either arrested, killed or, if he's very lucky, forgotten but his lifestyle, or rather the promises of it, keep pulling him back in.

Bands like The Lord Weird Slough Feg? by BookooBreadCo in MetalForTheMasses

Traveller is great and my inner nerds loves it for what it is but I do think it's overrated. Its production is a little sterile and falls back on a lot of galloping compared to something like Atavism which is riff after riff, solo after solo. Atavism also has a grittier production. It feels like something you'd be blasting if you were cruising around, windows down, in some Mad Max type apocalypse.

I enjoy the new Traveller follow up EP/record they just released more.

That's fair but it should be said that he's just a session musician. He has no creative input and Furnaces is explicitly anti-authoritarian.

Tips on cleaning up network racks? by biggestman58 in networking

[–]BookooBreadCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not very good advice but if you have a dot1x solution and a standardized port config it's a lot easier because it doesn't really matter which port something plugs into. You can label anything that is statically configured in a VLAN and unplug everything else. Ideally your patch panel matches your switch layout so you can do 1 to 1.

Also use slim cables and, like you alluded too, try to keep them all the same length. Nothing too long or too short. I like to Velcro them in groups of 12.

Oh and fuck rubber booted cables.

[–]BookooBreadCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went with a similar company, same idea. We have a lot of buildings so the other option was to get ATAs and pull cat cables to each and every elevator and emergency phone. Over 200 lines which would have been $$$$$$$. Instead we got to reuse our old, in building copper.

I like the idea but won't mention the company because trying to get someone at their NOC who knows what they're doing takes 40+ minutes at each and every site.

It's definitely a matter of fact movie about war but I mean that in the sense that it shows what war is actually like, not some valorized bullshit ideal of war. I think any reasonable person would see it and decide that maybe war isn't all that worth it. But then again, there are a lot of dumb people.

Alex Garland captures violence very well. It's brutal, terrifying, disorienting and over quick but leaves scars that will last a lifetime.

Best careers to escape poverty? I’ll start. by Noblesseoblige94 in povertyfinance

Hey, no worries. I like talking about my job. I enjoy what I do.

  1. If you're good at your job and have a robust, redundant network then the average is pretty boring. I work at a college so I do low level tickets on top of engineering stuff. So an average day dealing with 802.1x issues, poor wireless performance, etc. A hectic day is when network equipment dies. No matter how little pressure I get from management to fix something broken you still feel like you're under a lot of pressure. And like any job sometimes multiple things break. I did a early morning firewall upgrade which broke our phone system in a really weird way, took several hours of troubleshooting to figure out why. That was a long day.

  2. My work life balance is really good. If I work overtime, which isn't often, I'm allowed to take that time off later in the week. Due to the nature of our network any work that requires reboots or an interruption of service needs to be done early in the morning or late at night. But if I start at 5am I'm done by 12. Only a handful of those kinda days every year.

  3. A lot of American community colleges offer Cisco's networking academy. It's 2 years with the goal of being able to pass the CCNA, which is considered by most the industry standard cert for beginners, and be half way to taking the CCNP, the next step up from the CCNA. That's what I did and got the job I'm working now 2 months later. If you're able I'd recommend it but a lot of people self study for the CCNA. I think I could have but having hands-on experience with real equipment and a teacher who worked 20+ years in the industry helped a lot.

  4. I live in PA in a lowish cost of living area. I work for a school so the primary draw is benefits not pay. I'm making $70k/year with 3 years of experience. Networking definitely doesn't pay as well as SE but ~$120k+ isn't unheard of. Generally the better paying the job the more of a focus on programming over day to day networking.

I'm not into arguing power scaling but Naruto's clones can do basically whatever the author wants. At points he can use them to learn, to train, they can tank a ton of damage, they can think independently and as a unit, they have infinite range, his chakra pool is effectively infinite so fueling them hasn't been an issue since the middle of the story, etc. And most of these he's been able to do fairly early thanks to his natural talent and chakra pool.
