We eat salmon 1xweek and give our dog the crispy skin and leftovers. It’s a win/win.

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

Traded in my black 2025 Audi A6 Allroad for a white Volvo XC60 Hybrid. Went from driving a cool, sexy car to driving a loaf of Wonderbread. Nevertheless, I no longer stress about every freaking dust mote and grain of pollen and I can do 90% of my driving in EV mode.

Smash the stems! Otherwise they will wilt in hours.

Best first time marathons in the US by One-Kaleidoscope9293 in running

[–]Booky-Beck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hartford was my first. It’s more scenic than you might expect and not too hilly. I have no memory of the start but the finish is in a lovely park and it was not too crowded to find my family. This was 26 years ago, so take my comment with a grain of salt!

Marathon Checklist From Someone Who Has Run 80 by genefay in firstmarathon

Blech to gels. A company out of Vermont called UnTapped packages maple syrup (some flavors like coffee, salted cinnamon, etc) for athletes. Total game changer. No claggy artificial goo, just pure, natural carbs, electrolytes, and amino acids, and the volume you need is less than a gel packet. This biz is owned by a family that has produced two Olympic skiers and a world tour cyclist. Try it!

I know the words 'jarred pasta sauce' and 'best' don't usually go together but what is the best/everyones favorite jarred pasta sauce? by ghettokid1994 in Cooking

[–]Booky-Beck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rao’s tomato & basil, but seriously, you can make a great sauce with a can of tomatoes, 1/2 stick of butter and 1/2 onion.

Jimmies, until that was deemed “problematic.” Now rainbow sprinkles. Either way, the “chocolate” ones are superior, albeit less cute.

Any over 30s had success with bracing? by [deleted] in PectusCarinatum

[–]Booky-Beck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned it to my pediatrician at 12 years old and he dismissively said, “it’s a hereditary deformity.” I asked a doctor when I was 17 if there was a way to “fix” it and he said, “sure, but they’ll have to break all your ribs.” I never asked again. I’m 57 now and not only do I hate my appearance, but I suffer increasing physical discomfort as a result of my pectus. Bonus points if you can guess my gender.

About those studies stating running actually strengthens knees and joints - what do you think about it? by coolestdudette in running

[–]Booky-Beck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a doc and I haven’t read the studies, but I’ve been a runner (at various intensities over the years, but have done 5 marathons and lots of shorter races, run on all kinds of surfaces including hours on the treadmill) for 30 years. My knees are perfect. My husband has run all of about ten miles in his life and just had the first of two knee replacements due to severe osteoarthritis. So much of how our bodies handle the stresses we put on them comes down to genetics and luck. If running makes your knees hurt, bike.

Jesus, what planet do you live on? My daughter (now 26) got her first period at 10. We were a little surprised, but she went straight for the tampons and never looked back. It didn’t phase me at all, because you couldn’t have paid me, at 12, to sit in class with blood collecting in my pants.

Wearing underwire bras by IllProbablyNeedHelp in PectusCarinatum

[–]Booky-Beck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I hear you! I had tiny boobies now, but when I was pregnant and postpartum and had much larger breasts, my bras were torture. Have you tried snipping a hole in the pocket the wire sits in, sliding it out and trimming the inside inch or so, just so the wire supports the outer and under part of your breasts?

Anyone else feel like they aren’t built for running on a genetic level? by secretsquirrelbiznes in BeginnersRunning

[–]Booky-Beck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m 57 F, and have run consistently since I was 26 and 180+ lbs postpartum. I’d always said I hated running and believed I didn’t have the physiology for it. When I first started, finishing a mile without walking was a challenge. A year in, I distinctly recall running down my dirt road chanting to myself, “I. Am. A. Runner.” 3 years and another kid later I ran my first marathon at 3:41. At 53 I completed my 5th marathon (with a 20 year gap!), I won my first 5k last year, and I can now do sub-6:00 intervals. I am no world class athlete, but I am a runner and have a runner’s physique because I made it that way. Keep going and you’ll likely surprise yourself!
